Software Configuration Management controls the evolution of software items and supports building and deployment Process for product releases. Models and methods for implementation of software Configuration Management are presented in the paper. Unlike other approaches, the provided models and methods are related to decrease software Configuration Management implementation time in new projects. The paper provides a simplified use case to illustrate practical application of the mentioned methods and models.

To achieve this, software Configuration Management have to prepare solutions for tasks such as identification of software Configuration items, version control, build and deploy Management etc. The paper provides new model-driven approach for implementation of software Configuration Management. New approach is supported by set of models to describe software Configuration Management Process from different sides. New approach helps to organize existing solutions in parameterized way that increase ability of its reuse. Current paper introduces to problems in software Configuration Management area and main trends of new solutions. After introduction, new model-driven approach described. The second part of paper provides models for new approach. Presentation of models combined with simplified use case, which illustrates practical application of models. Finally, directions of further researches are provided.

There are multiple tasks such as version control, build Management, deploy Management, status accounting, bug tracking and many others that should be solved to support full Configuration Management Process according to most popular quality standards. The main scope of the mentioned Process is to include only valid and tested software items to final version of product and prepare a new version as soon as possible. To implement different tasks of software Configuration Management Process, a set of different tools, scripts and utilities should be used. The current paper provides a new model-based approach to implementation of Configuration Management. Using different models, a new approach helps to organize existing solutions and develop new ones by a parameterized way, thus increasing reuse of solutions. The study provides a general description of new model-based conception and definitions of all models needed to implement a new approach. The second part of the paper contains an overview of criteria, practical experiments and lessons learned from using new models in software Configuration Management. Finally, further works are defined based on results of practical experiments and lessons learned.

arXiv: Cryptography and Security, 2019Co-Authors: Holger Kinkelin, Heiko Niedermayer, Marcoliver Muller, Georg CarleAbstract:Configuration Management in networks with highest security demands must not depend on just one administrator and her device. Otherwise, problems can be caused by mistakes or malicious behavior of this admin, or when her computer got compromised, which allows an attacker to abuse the administrator's far-reaching permissions. Instead, we propose to use a reliable and resilient Configuration Management Process orchestrated by a Configuration Management system (CMS). This can be achieved by separation of concerns (proposing a Configuration vs. authorizing it), employing multi-party authorization (MPA), and enforcing that only authorized Configurations can be deployed. This results in a Configuration Management Process that is decentralized on a human, decision-making level, and a technical, device level. However, due to different opinions or adversarial interference, the result of an MPA Process can end in a conflict. This raises the question how such conflicts can be mediated in a better way than just employing majority voting, which is insufficient in certain situations. As an alternative, this paper introduces building blocks of customizable conflict mediation strategies which we integrated into our CMS TANCS . The conflict mediation functionality as well as the initial TANCS implementation run on top of the distributed ledger and smart contract framework Hyperledger Fabric which makes all Processes resilient and tamper-resistant.

Trustworthy Configuration Management for networked devices using distributed ledgers

These applications inherently have a strong connection to the physical world. Hence, IT security threats cannot only cause problems like data leaks but also safety issues which might harm people. Attacks on IT systems are not only performed by outside attackers but also insiders like administrators. For this reason, we present ongoing work on a Configuration Management system (CMS) that provides control over administrators, restrains their rights, and enforces separation of concerns. We reach this goal by conducting a Configuration Management Process that requires multi-party authorization for critical Configurations to achieve Byzantine fault tolerance against attacks and faults by administrators. Only after a Configuration has been authorized by multiple experts, it is applied to the targeted devices. For the whole Configuration Management Process, our CMS guarantees accountability and traceability. Lastly, our system is tamper-resistant as we leverage Hyperledger Fabric, which provides a distributed execution environment for our CMS and a blockchain-based distributed ledger that we use to store the Configurations. A beneficial side effect of this approach is that our CMS is also suitable to manage Configurations for infrastructure shared across different organizations that do not need to trust each other.

Can the effectiveness of software Processes be assessed?
Software Quality Journal, 1994Co-Authors: Jennifer L. Gasston, Terence P. RoutAbstract:A conceptual model is presented for the assessment of the effectiveness of software Processes. The model distinguishes between three levels — the organization, the Process, and the constituent activities, and proposes appropriate indicators for each level. The validity of the model has been investigated through an empirical case study of the Configuration Management Process in a small software development organization, and preliminary results demonstrate its validity and usefulness.
