Co-Authors: Ayad E. Korial, Mohammed Najm Abdullah
    Abstract:

paper presents novel structure for visually impaired/blind people using beacon and smart phone. The proposed structure is consisted of three parts. In the first part esp8266 module due to ultra-low power consumption, in the second part Configurator Application to configure these beacon and last part is mobile Application to detect these beacons. The aim is to help visually impaired/blind people to knowledge the environment in which they live by. Three tests applied in real environment. The results show good performance for the suggested scheme help the visually impaired/blind people reach the desired devices location successfully without error. In conclusion, beacon and smart phone were a valid and reliable method to help the visually impaired/blind people to know the location of devices that are nearest from him in indoor environment. General Terms Beacon, nearby notification. Keywordssmart phone, visually impaired/blind people, RSSI, esp8266 module and indoor navigation.

  • BlueEyes: using beacon and smart phone for visually impaired / blind people
    2019
    Co-Authors: Thaker, Harshkumar Bhupendrakumar
    Abstract:

There are currently few options for navigational aids for the blind and visually impaired (BVI) in large indoor and outdoor spaces. Such indoor and outdoor spaces can be difficult to navigate even for the general sighted population if they are disoriented due to unfamiliarity or other reasons. This paper presents an indoor wayfinding system called GuideBeacon for the blind, visually impaired, and disoriented (BVID) that assists people in navigating between any two points within indoor environments. The GuideBeacon system allows users equipped with smartphones to interact with low cost Bluetooth-based beacons deployed strategically within the indoor space of interest to navigate their surroundings. This paper describes the technical challenges faced in designing such a system, the design decisions made in building the current version of the GuideBeacon system, the solutions developed to meet the technical challenges, and results from the evaluation of the system. Results presented in this paper obtained from field testing GuideBeacon with BVI and sighted participants suggests that it can be used by the BVID for navigation in large indoor spaces independently and effectively. • OpenConfigurator - A Practical Approach to Configurator Implementation
    2012
    Co-Authors: Vivian Steller
    Abstract:

Selling customizable products, tailored to customers demands becomes an increasingly important business opportunity in highly competitive, saturated markets. Enterprises pursuing product customization, employ product Configurators to support the configuration of customized product variants. Thereby, product configuration systems efficiently facilitate the integration of the customer into the enterprise's value chain and reduce the complexity induced by the manufacturing of customizable products. Since Configurators encapsulate the complete product knowledge, including manifold constraints, implementing them technically in a sustainable way, is challenging and complex. The adequate modeling of configurable products is decisive for the system's maintainability. Therefore, the modeling capabilities must support the precise, correct and compact, yet human readable and verifiable definition of configuration knowledge. The researched methodology presented in this work, called OpenConfigurator, implements a framework for realizing custom product Configurators. OpenConfigurator defines a conceptual modeling language to describe configurable products as Java classes, annotated with configuration meta-data. The generic API offered by the framework, allows to instantiate the custom, domain-specific product model, while maintaining the configuration's consistency during the specification process. The framework's capabilities are demonstrated by the implementation of a generic mobile Configurator Application. The methodology shows how modern Java EE technologies including JPA, Bean Validation and CDI are used, to simplify the development of Configurators. Leveraging standardized technologies, the introduced approach is easy to learn. Moreover, the resulting Configurator incorporates a highly flexible, extensible architecture, that strongly fosters maintainability.

  • Evaluating a Configurator Application for Modeling Data Collection Instruments: An Experimental Study
    2016
    Co-Authors: Dominic Gebhardt
    Abstract:

Software Applications are a crucial part of our daily life and become more and more indispensable. Over the years, software itself has gone through a rapid development. Therefore, not only the complexity has increased, but also the quality requirements of customers. One important quality aspect that have to be fulfilled in order to guarantee acceptance of the software Application is its usability. However, ensuring the latter is by no means easy. Thus, developers are obliged to test their software product during the development phase in order to gather respective information. Furthermore, testing allows reacting immediately and adapting the software accordingly if needed. Experiments are common methods for testing and, therefore, for obtaining important data as scientific foundation for further analysis. The thesis at hand evaluates a newly developed Configurator Application for modeling data collection instruments regarding its usability. Therefore, a controlled experiment is set up in order to investigate how much effort end-users need to properly handle the Application. In particular, the overall understanding of the (modeling) concept with respect to the complexity of the Configurator is evaluated. In this context, the software is used in order to model specific data collection instruments. More precisely, participants in the experiment are asked to process tasks of different complexity using the Configurator Application. Thereby, the focus is on the total time needed to solve the tasks as well as the number of errors in the resulting questionnaire models. Considering the results obtained assumptions regarding the intuitiveness of the (modeling) concept can be made.
