Genetic consequences of intensive Conservation Management for the Mauritius parakeet

GroombridgeAbstract:For Conservation managers tasked with recovering threatened species, genetic structure can exacerbate the rate of loss of genetic diversity because alleles unique to a sub-population are more likely to be lost by the effects of random genetic drift than if a population is panmictic. Given that intensive Management techniques commonly used to recover threatened species frequently involve movement of individuals within and between populations, managers need to be aware not only of pre-existing levels of genetic structure but also of the potential effects that intensive Management might have on these patterns. The Mauritius parakeet ( Psittacula echo ) has been the subject of an intensive Conservation programme, involving translocation and reintroduction that has recovered the population from less than 20 individuals in 1987 to approximately 500 in 2010. Analysis of genotype data derived from 18 microsatellite markers developed for this species reveals a clear signal of structure in the population before intensive Management began, but which subsequently disappears following Management intervention. This study illustrates the impacts that Conservation Management can have on the genetic structure of an island endemic population and demonstrates how translocations or reintroductions can benefit populations of endangered species by reducing the risk of loss of genetic diversity.

This paper discusses the impact of the advanced systems of architectural survey and modelling to the research on the Conservation Management Plan (CMP) for architectural heritage, particularly when such a tool is applied to the 20th century architectural heritage. The authors focus on a comparison between the Building Information Modelling (BIM) technology and the Geographic Information Systems (GIS). The Conservation Management Plan for the National Art Schools of Havana in Cuba is used as case study. Given the plurality of buildings and various levels of interest in such a context, Conservation and Management needs, the need to share the results with non-specialized stakeholders, the need to combine different scales of analysis and different typologies of materials, the results point out the advantages of a GIS platform. The conclusions open to further possibilities of integrating GIS and BIM to the specific task of effectively conserving and managing the 20th century architectural heritage.

This paper discusses the relationship between advanced geomatics and Conservation Management Plan (CMP), by deepening the case of a CMP dedicated to the Conservation of the 20th century architectural heritage. A number of issues have already been discussed on how the advanced survey techniques contribute to the Conservation field for the last decades (e.g. Laser Scanner, HDR, GIS, intelligence vs. abundance, B.I.M, VT/IM etc.). The authors analyse pros and cons of each technique with respect to the main purposes of a CMP: 1.knowledge, 2.value assessment, 3.data sharing and dissemination of results, 4.support for Conservation and restoration activities, 5.support for the planned Conservation of buildings / facility Management over time. With respect to the research on the CMP for the National Art Schools of Havana, the conclusions focus on the need to share results to non-specialist stakeholders, and on the possibility to combine different scales of analysis and a plurality of buildings with various levels of interest and Conservation needs.

This is especially important for mobile species, which can be exposed to threats across large areas, but the space use requirements of different species can vary to an extent that might render some Management approaches inefficient. Here the space use patterns of seabirds were examined to provide guidance on whether Conservation Management approaches should be tailored for taxonomic groups with different movement characteristics. Seabird tracking data were synthesised from 5419 adult breeding individuals of 52 species in ten families that were collected in the Atlantic Ocean basin between 1998 and 2017. Two key aspects of spatial distribution were quantified, namely how far seabirds ranged from their colony, and to what extent individuals from the same colony used the same areas at sea. There was evidence for substantial differences in patterns of space-use among the ten studied seabird families, indicating that several alternative Conservation Management approaches are needed. Several species exhibited large foraging ranges and little aggregation at sea, indicating that area-based Conservation solutions would have to be extremely large to adequately protect such species. The results highlight that short-ranging and aggregating species such as cormorants, auks, some penguins, and gulls would benefit from Conservation approaches at relatively small spatial scales during their breeding season. However, improved regulation of fisheries, bycatch, pollution and other threats over large spatial scales will be needed for wide-ranging and dispersed species such as albatrosses, petrels, storm petrels and frigatebirds.

Tools for integrating range change, extinction risk and climate change information into Conservation Management

BrookAbstract:Ecological niche models (ENMs) are the primary tool used to describe and forecast the potential influence of climate change on biodiversity. However, ENMs do not directly account for important biological and landscape processes likely to affect range dynamics at a variety of spatial scales. Recent advances to link ENMs with population models have focused on the fundamental step of integrating dispersal and metapopulation dynamics into forecasts of species geographic ranges. Here we use a combination of novel analyses and a synthesis of findings from published plant and animal case studies to highlight three seldom recognised, yet important, advantages of linking ENMs with demographic modelling approaches: 1) they provide direct measures of extinction risk in addition to measures of vulnerability based on change in the potential range area or total habitat suitability. 2) They capture life-history traits that permit population density to vary in different ways in response to key spatial drivers, conditioned by the processes of global change. 3) They can be used to explore and rank the cost effectiveness of regional Conservation alternatives and demographically oriented Management interventions. Given these advantages, we argue that coupled methods should be used preferentially where data permits and when Conservation Management decisions require intervention, prioritization, or direct estimates of extinction risk.

When evaluating the usefulness of environmental monitoring, the focus may be on accuracy, as is usually done by scientists, or on efficiency in terms of Conservation impact. To test whether investment in participatory biodiversity monitoring makes economic sense for obtaining data for Management decisions, we compared the cost efficiency of participatory and conventional biodiversity monitoring methods in Philippine parks. We found that, from a government perspective, investment in monitoring that combines scientific with participatory methods is strikingly more effective than a similar level of investment in conventional scientific methods alone in generating Conservation Management interventions.
