Materials and methods This report is based on a compilation of the scientific literature, an expert conference, and the approval by the General Assembly of EFCD. Results ETW is a chemical-mechanical process resulting in a cumulative loss of hard dental tissue not caused by bacteria, and it is characterized by loss of the natural surface morphology and contour of the teeth. A suitable index for classification of ETW is the basic erosive wear examination (BEWE). Regarding the etiology, patient-related factors include the predisposition to erosion, reflux, vomiting, drinking and eating habits, as well as medications and dietary supplements. Nutritional factors relate to the composition of foods and beverages, e.g., with low pH and high buffer capacity (major risk factors), and calcium concentration (major protective factor). Occupational factors are exposition of workers to acidic liquids or vapors. Preventive management of ETWaims at reducing or stopping the progression of the lesions. Restorative management aims at reducing symptoms of pain and dentine hypersensitivity, or to restore esthetic and function, but it should only be used in conjunction with preventive strategies. Conclusions Effective management of ETW includes screening for early signs of ETW and evaluating all etiological factors. Clinical relevance ETW is a clinical condition, which calls for the increased attention of the dental community and is a challenge for the cooperation with other medical specialities.

Patient responses to Er:YAG laser when used for Conservative Dentistry

The aims of this study were to verify the efficacy of the way patients are informed and to evaluate their satisfaction with laser-assisted treatment. Before treatment, 100 patients were given a brochure that explained the relevant laser-assisted dental procedures, and after dental treatment an 11-item questionnaire was administered to the patients to evaluate their satisfaction with the treatment. Statistical analysis showed high levels of satisfaction for all the questions, especially those regarding the choice between laser therapy and traditional instruments (100%), choosing laser in the future (89%), and recommending it to family and friends (84%). This study may be relevant when determining the overall satisfaction of patients with this new technology.

Er:YAG and adhesion in Conservative Dentistry : clinical overview.
Laser therapy, 2013Co-Authors: Carlo FornainiAbstract:The notion of utilizing laser technology in Conservative Dentistry was proposed in 1990 by Hibst and Keller, who introduced the possibility of using an Er:YAG laser as alternative to conventional instruments such as the turbine and micro-motor. In subsequent years a continuing effort has been made by clinicians, researchers and commercial companies to improve the technology. The aim of this clinical study is to demonstrate, by the description of different clinical cases, the possibilities and the advantages of using Er:YAG lasers in Conservative Dentistry and to show that better results may be achieved in terms of stronger adhesion, less invasiveness, reduced pain as well as greater comfort and satisfaction of patients.

Aerosols generation using Er,Cr:YSGG laser compared to rotary instruments in Conservative Dentistry: A preliminary study
Journal of clinical and experimental dentistry, 2021Co-Authors: Haitham Abdelkarim-elafifi, Cristina Arnabat-artés, Isabel Parada-avendaño, Marina Polonsky, Josep Arnabat-domínguezAbstract:BACKGROUND: In restorative Dentistry, the use of high-speed air turbine, which generates aerosols, can be associated with the transmission of airborne diseases New laser technologies could be useful in reducing the amount of aerosols, but there is a lack of scientific research on this topic MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is a descriptive study to analyze the amount of aerosols produced after class I cavity preparation using high-speed air turbine (group 1) and Er,Cr:YSGG laser with two different parameters (groups 2 and 3) Fluorescein dye was incorporated into the coolant reservoir in order to visualize the production of aerosols during each procedure Tooth preparation was performed in a typodont with human lower molar tooth under rubber dam isolation The procedure was carried out in a transparent plastic box to avoid aerosols dispersion Sixteen grade I cellulose filter discs were distributed along the surfaces of the box The area contaminated with aerosols in the filters was measured using ultraviolet illumination RESULTS: In group 1, the contaminated surface area covered with fluorescein dye reached 77 3% (1349 cm2) of the total;in group 2 (laser with 80% water) we observed 7 3% (128 cm2) and in group 3 (laser with 40% water) it was 3 8% (68 cm2) The reduction in water parameter from 80% to 40% coincided with 48% reduction of the contaminated area on the filter discs Focusing on the surfaces of the box, we noted that the mean contamination on the left side was more than on the right side in all three experimental groups In group 1 using air turbine, we measured a mean of 102 6[±7 5 SD]cm2 on the left side, compared to 70 6[±32 3 SD]cm2 on the right side In laser groups 2 and 3, a mean of 12 8[±14 9 SD]cm2 and 6 8 [±5 7SD]cm2, respectively, was described on the left surface versus 0 cm2 of surface contamination on the right surface CONCLUSIONS: The contaminated area during the procedure of class I cavity preparation, is reduced by 70% using Er,Cr:YSGG laser compared to high-speed turbine A slightly higher contamination was observed between laser groups with 80% versus 40% water The use of Er,Cr:YSGG laser in restorative Dentistry can be a valid treatment alternative to reduce aerosols production compared to conventional high-speed rotary instruments Key words:Er,Cr:YSGG laser, Aerosols, SARS-CoV-2, Rotary instruments, Conservative Dentistry
