Role of Municipal Steering in Sustainable Building and Refurbishment

Our premise was that local authorities will have an essential Role in improving the awareness and commitment of stakeholders and in supporting them to understand potentials of sustainable building. However, this may require the development of current Roles. According to the results, consultation and negotiating steering is useful and needed especially towards non-professional builders. Change to Consulting steering requires changes in building control processes. The strengths of guidance by building control authorities would be neutrality, good coverage (all builders must anyway be involved with building control), personal contacts, and responding to acute need of the client. To increase the Consulting Role of the building control authorities, more resources are needed. Establishment of electronic services in building control is believed to be a means to release resources from routine work for guidance.Municipal actors are also showing increasing interest in preparing city-level sustainability strategies. The municipal strategies should be closely linked to the local administration to ensure the realization of the strategy and also the allocation of adequate resources.

Diagnostic utility of two commonly used ADHD screening measures among special education students.

PerwienAbstract:Objective: To examine the diagnostic utility of two commonly used attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) screening measures in a population of special education students and address whether screener performance is affected by demographic characteristics. Method: A school district population of special education students was screened for ADHD risk using two parent questionnaires, the 46-item Attention Deficit Disorders Evaluation Scale (ADDES) and the 10-item Conners Abbreviated Symptom Questionnaire (ASQ). All high-risk children and a random sample of low-risk children subsequently underwent DSM-IV-based diagnostic assessment through parental diagnostic interviews (Diagnostic Interview Schedule for Children Version 3.0). Diagnostic utility was summarized by sensitivity, specificity, predictive utilities of positive and negative tests, and efficiency, all of which were estimated using an approach that accounted for the sampling design. Results: Overall efficiency scores ranged between 70% and 74%. Sensitivity estimates were below 70% even at low screener cutoff scores. The ADDES did not perform significantly better than the ASQ. Significant gender and ethnicity effects emerged. Conclusions: Overall, both the ASQ and the ADDES yielded substantial numbers of false positives and false negatives among this population of children, indicating that alternative approaches will be required to accurately and efficiently identify children in need of services for ADHD. Child psychiatrists can play a valuable Consulting Role as school districts and primary care settings struggle to implement appropriate identification procedures for ADHD.

Using a Self-Instructional Package to Train Groups to Implement Reinforcement Strategies

Nuhu, Jessica Palmier, Elizabeth Brestan-knight, John T RappAbstract:We trained six special education staff members in groups of three to conduct differential reinforcement of alternative and differential reinforcement of other behavior procedures using a self-instructional package. Our self-instructional packages were written instructions and PowerPoint™ presentations that incorporated embedded text, video modeling, and voiceover instruction. After training, we evaluated each staff member’s implementation of the reinforcement strategies with a simulated student who engaged in problem behavior. After multiple exposures to the self-instructional package in a group training format, two participants mastered both procedures, two participants mastered one procedure, and two participants did not master either procedure. We discuss the clinical implications of the findings and utility of self-instructional packages in a school-Consulting Role.
