Integration and Special Education research in Norway
International Journal of Educational Research, 1998Co-Authors: Peder HaugAbstract:Abstract During the past two decades Norwegian research in Special Education has slowly been established as a field of its own. In this chapter Special Education research in Norway is examined in the context of Special Education policy for compulsory school age. Three different domains of Special Education research are discussed: its domain, its epistemology, and the development of institutions of Special Education research. Not unexpectedly, the connection between formulation of Educational policy and the realization of that policy is a big problem.

School Reform Models and Special Education
Education and Urban Society, 2003Co-Authors: Myung-sook Koh, Janna Siegel RobertsonAbstract:In an investigation of three comprehensive school reform models, Accelerated Schools, Roots and Wings, and Voices of Love and Freedom, teacher surveys were collected and analyzed to determine their impact on Special Education. There were no differences found in the Special Education teachers' perceptions of the models in the areas of professional development, resources, pedagogical changes, or outcomes. Teachers reported that there was increased inclusion and social interaction for Special Education students as well as some accommodations for students' learning needs. Weaknesses identified in implementation included a fast-paced curriculum and lack of modifications for Special Education students. Although the literature on these school reform models promises to improve the learning of all students at the school, eSpecially at-risk students, the Special Education teachers in the urban school district gave mixed views on whether implementation of their school's model was of great benefit to their students.

Practice and Research in Special Education
Exceptional Children, 1995Co-Authors: David B. Malouf, Ellen P. SchillerAbstract:This article considers possible reasons that research knowledge is not used more extensively in Special Education practice and suggests issues to be addressed in solving this problem. We contrast research knowledge and practice knowledge and describe factors that moderate the influence of research on practice, in both general and Special Education. These factors include teacher knowledge and learning, teacher attitudes and beliefs, and context. We conclude by considering various issues and alternatives for reconceptualizing the relationship between research and practice in Special Education.

Special Education in Russia History, Reality, and Prospects
Journal of learning disabilities, 1998Co-Authors: Vladimir V. Korkunov, Alexander S. Nigayev, Lynne D. Reynolds, Janet W. LernerAbstract:Special Education in Russia is undergoing major change. It is shifting from a system that was first established under the Soviet communist regime over 70 years ago to one that reflects a more humanistic view of children with disabilities. To describe Special Education in Russia, this article (a) explains the background information on the formation of a Russian-American partnership, (b) offers an historical perspective of Special Education in Russia, (c) reviews the current status of Special Education in Russia and in particular the Sverdlovsk Oblast, and (d) forecasts future directions of Russian Special Education. In considering new goals and future directions for Special Education in Russia, the authors suggest that the policies and legislation developed by the Provinces in Canada may offer a workable model for a Russian Special Education system.
