    User-centered Design asks people to go out in the field and run inquiries to understand users. But it’s still a challenge to see what matters when you’re there. The user’s world is complex, overwhelming, and full of a million details—some of which matter for any Design problem and many of which don’t. As user research teams and organizations have become more common, it has become a larger problem to communicate insight from the user research to the whole product team, so that everyone can see what matters. Contextual Design has always used models of the user to communicate; with Contextual Design 2.0, we've expanded those models to communicate the aspects of Design that matter for today's highly connected technology. In this chapter we discuss the problems of representing user data to reveal what is going on across an entire market.

Contextual Design was first invented in 1988 and has since been used in a wide variety of industries and taught in universities all over the world. It is a complete front-end Design process rooted in Contextual Inquiry, the widespread, industry-standard field data gathering technique. Contextual Design adds techniques to analyze and present user data, drive ideation from data, Design specific product solutions, and iterate those solutions with customers. In 2013, we overhauled the method to account for the way that technology has radically changed people's lives since the invention of the touchscreen phones and other always-on, always-connected, and always-carried devices. This book describes the new Contextual Design, evolved to help teams Design for the way technology now fits into peoples' lives. We briefly describe the steps of the latest version of Contextual Design and show how they create a continual immersion in the world of the user for the purpose of innovative product Design.

    Due to the increasing speed of landscape changes and the massive development of computer technologies, the methods of representing heritage landscapes using digital tools have become a worldwide concern in conservation research. The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how an ‘interpretative model’ can be used for Contextual Design of heritage landscape information systems. This approach is explored through building a geographic information system database for St Helena Island national park in Moreton Bay, South East Queensland, Australia. Stakeholders' interpretations of this landscape were collected through interviews, and then used as a framework for Designing the database. The Designed database is a digital inventory providing Contextual descriptions of the historic infrastructure remnants on St Helena Island. It also reveals the priorities of different sites in terms of historic research, landscape restoration, and tourism development. Additionally, this database produces thematic maps of the intangible heritage values, which could be used for landscape interpretation. This approach is different from the existing methods because building a heritage information system is deemed as an interpretative activity, rather than a value-free replication of the physical environment. This approach also shows how a cultural landscape methodology can be used to create a flexible information system for heritage conservation. The conclusion is that an ‘interpretative model’ of database Design facilitates a more explicit focus on information support, and is a potentially effective approach to user-centred Design of geographic information systems.

    Contextual Design helps to use customer data to produce the right Design for the company. It also encourages organizations to make decisions about system direction and reDesigned work practice based on how real people work and live. Rapid CD processes help to get data into the Design processes in as little as two to four weeks. It takes a little add-on time to do some reDesign and prototyping and then one can produce a user-centered Design within eight to ten weeks. Introducing a more robust front-end Design process is required. A change that can subsequently reduce development and Design time on the back end, simplify requirements prioritizations, and increase the quality of the user experience, but change nonetheless. It is important to make the project visible. It is noted that the Contextual Design process is best done with a dedicated Design room that creates its own buzz. Design artifacts like the affinity diagram, the online data browser created with CDTools, storyboards, paper prototypes, and the team room are used to make the project visible..

    Rapid Contextual Design presents strategies for getting user data into projects. Rapid CD Design processes pull together the sets of techniques from Contextual Design in order to address the project problems. Several viable rapid CD Design processes are available that helps in choosing what CD techniques to use for the project. These processes include lightning fast, lightning fast +, and focused rapid CD. It is noted that user data infused into a project is always better than no user data as the data gives a basis for Design and for making informed decisions. This chapter essentially helps in planning a rapid CD project. It is observed that a clear plan is the most important variable for the success of a project. Rapid CD techniques can be used on any project to gather customer data. A well suited project is usually small and targets a few clearly defined job roles. This chapter also outlines several typical paths through the process that can support several variants of rapid CD projects.
