A total of 105 fish were collected from two lakes located in the municipal district of Pirassununga, São Paulo, Brazil, of which 95.2 % were infested by L_3 larvae of Contracaecum sp., with an average intensity of 348.7 ± 231.55 helminths/fish. A total of 76 fish were analyzed to establish hematological parameters. Following analysis, it was found that there was a significant difference between hematological parameters Hct, erythrocytes (Er), thrombocytopenia ( p  = 0.01), and Hb ( p  = 0.02) in lakes A and B, while there was no significant difference for leukocyte ( p  = 0.68), mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin ( p  = 0.06), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration ( p  = 0.47).     Abstract:

    ABSTRACT: The aim of this study was to evaluate the histological changes in the liver of thirty-five Gymnotus spp. parasitized by endohelminths collected between April 2012 to October 2013 in commercial bait fish farming of Pantanal basin. Histological cuts of 7µm were stained with hematoxylin-eosin for parasites research and liver changes and have also been submitted to the Perls histochemical method for evaluation of hemosiderosis (Fe+++) based on the incidence degree and severity of change (Grade I, II and III) and tests for the presence of central melanomacrophages. Parasites identified were: Brevimulticaecum sp. with a prevalence of 22,9%, Eustrongylides sp 17,1%, Contracaecum type I 68,7%, Contracaecum type II 5,7%, Contracaecum type III 5,7% and larvae of Anisakidae 11,4%. Histological analysis showed intense disorganization of hepatic parenchyma with degenerate hepatocytes due to high parasitic infection, changes that can be deleterious and compromise the organism functioning, being harmful to the health of evaluated animals. Also evidencing normal tissue interleaved with different stages of Fe+++ deposit in grades II and III, injuring or destroing the cell. Histopathological changes in the tuvira's liver suggested a chronic response and the development of a balance relation between tuvira and parasitism by endohelminth identified in this study. There are also a testimony to the health condition of commercial bait fish farming on current ecosystem conditions

    Fifty-one specimens of Acestrorhynchus lacustris (Lutken, 1875) collected on the Upper Parana River floodplain were analyzed from February 2000 to November 2001. Of these, 35 (68.6%) were parasitized by at least one species of endohelminth. Eight species of endoparasites were found: five nematodes (Contracaecum Type 1 larvae of Moravec, Kohn and Fernades, 1993, Contracaecum Type 2 larvae of Moravec, Kohn and Fernades, 1993, Contracaecum sp., Eustrongylides sp. and Procamallanus sp.), two digeneans (Clinostomum sp. and Rhipidocotyle gibsoni Kohn and Fernandes, 1994) and one acanthocephalan (Quadrigyrus torquatus Van Cleave, 1920). Contracaecum sp. and Q. torquatus were positively associated and also had positively correlated abundances. There was significant difference in the prevalence and abudance of infection of Q. torquatus between hosts sexes. This parasite also presented negative correlation between its intensity and host standard length. There are significant positive correlation between the prevalence of Contracaecum Type 1 and host standard length.

    We examined 136 specimens of Cichla monoculus Spix, 1831, collected in the Parana River near Porto Rico, State of Parana, Brazil, from July 1996 through October 1997. Of the total number of fish, 133 (97.8%) were infected with at least 1 species of helminth. A total of 8 helminth species was recorded: 3 Digenea, Clinostomum sp., Diplostomum (Austrodiplostomum) compactum (Lutz, 1928), and Diplostomum sp.; 3 Cestoda, Proteocephalus microscopicus Woodland, 1935, Proteocephalus macrophallus (Diesing, 1850), and Sciadocephalus megalodiscus Diesing, 1850; 1 Nematoda, Contracaecum sp.; and 1 Acanthocephala, Quadrigyrus machadoi Fabio, 1983. Proteocephalus microscopicus and P. macrophallus showed the highest values of prevalence and intensity of infection, followed by Contracaecum sp. In the endoparasite community of C. monoculus, the cestodes are both dominant and codominant species. The typical pattern of overdispersion or aggregation was observed for P. microscopicus, P. macrophallus, S. megalodiscus, Q. machadoi, and Contracaecum sp. Prevalence and total host length were positively correlated in fish parasitized by P. microscopicus, P. macrophallus, and S. megalodiscus. Infection intensity and host length were positively correlated only for P. microscopicus. There were significant differences in the prevalence of P. macrophallus and Q. machadoi in males and females of C. monoculus. Clinostomum sp., Diplostomum sp., D. (A.) compactum, and Q. machadoi were found for the first time in C. monoculus.

    Summary Until now studies in Brazil of the pathological action of Contracaecum sp. larvae in Hoplias malabaricus have been rare. The aim of the present study was to analyze and describe histopathological changes in the stomach of H. malabaricus caused by different intensities of infection by larvae of Contracaecum sp., and the hematological effects of such infection. The mean intensity of infection by L3 larvae of Contracaecum sp. correlated positively with Hematocrit percentage (Hct%) and correlated negatively with mean corpuscular volume (MCV). These findings are possibly related to the passage of larvae from the stomach to the mesentery, potentially due to hemorrhaging t. Fish with high infection intensity had larvae of Contracaecum sp in the submucosal of the stomach, which caused destruction of Type I and Type III collagen (finer and more delicate collagen fibers which do not form beams and are permeated by fundamental substances) around the parasite. Microscopic analysis showed that crypts were arranged regularly throughout the stomach mucosal, varying in number, size and depth, depending on the region of the stomach.

    The aim of this study was to evaluate the tegument, musculature and mesentery of 102 specimens of Hoplerytrinus unitaeniatus, 104 of Hoplias malabaricus and 101 of Pygocentrus nattereri, from Arari Lake, Marajó Island, State of Pará, Brazil. Were identified the nematodes Contracaecum sp., Eustrongylides sp. and Procamallanus sp. Contracaecum sp. was the most prevalent, with rates of 84.31% (H. unitaeniatus), 95.19% (H. malabaricus), and 89.11% (P. nattereri). The highest prevalences of Eustrongylides sp. occurred in H. unitaeniatus (56.86%) and H. malabaricus (53.84%). Procamallanus sp. was only collected in the mesentery. Specimens of Eustrongylides sp. collected from the musculature were 91.9% of its population. Among the nematodes found in the mesentery, 98.34% were Contracaecum sp. with a mean intensity (MI) of 7.92 ± 8.11 (H. unitaeniatus), 8.49 ± 8.34 (H. malabaricus) and 7 ± 6.40 (P. nattereri). Contracaecum sp. presented the highest MI (8.49 ± 8.34) and mean abundance (8.09 ± 8.34). The highest MI values were observed in the mesentery. Eustrongylides sp. presented MI of 2.65 ± 3.21 (H. unitaeniatus), 3.41 ± 3.27 (H. malabaricus) and 2.17 ± 1.18 (P. nattereri). Contracaecum sp. foi o mais prevalente, com índices de 84,31% (H. unitaeniatus), 95,19% (H. malabaricus) e 89,11% (P. nattereri). As maiores prevalências de Eustrongylides sp. foram observadas em H. unitaeniatus (56,86%) e H. malabaricus (53,84%). Procamallanus sp. só foi coletado no mesentério, sendo o sítio de infecção mais parasitado. Na musculatura, foram coletados espécimes de Eustrongylides sp., representando 91,9% de sua população. Dos nematóides coletados no mesentério, 98,34% foram Contracaecum sp. com intensidade média (IM) de 7,92 ± 8,11 (H. unitaeniatus), 8,49 ± 8,34 (H. malabaricus) e 7,0 ± 6,40 (P. nattereri). Contracaecum sp. apresentou maior IM (8,49 ± 8,34) e abundância média (8,09 ± 8,34). Os maiores valores de IM foram obtidos no mesentério. Eustrongylides sp. apresentou IM de 2,65 ± 3,21 (H. unitaeniatus), 3,41 ± 3,27 (H. malabaricus) e 2,17 ± 1,18 (P. nattereri).     Hoplias malabaricus and Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus are Erythrinidae family widely distributed in the Amazon River system of great value to both commercial and subsistence fi shing for riverine populations. As such, the objective of the present study was to investigate the endoparasite communities of H. malabaricus and H. unitaeniatus of a tributary of the Amazon River in the north of Brazil. The endoparasite communities of H. unitaeniatus and H. malabaricus were taxonomically similar (85%) and consisted of Clinostomum marginatum, Contracaecum sp., Guyanema seriei seriei, Procamallanus (Spirocamallanus) inopinatus, Pseudoproleptus sp. and Gorytocephalus spectabilis, although the dominant endoparasite was C. marginatum, which was the most prevalent and abundant. All the specimens of both H. malabaricus and H. unitaeniatus were parasitized, with a total of 1237 helminths collected in the former host and 1151 helminths collected in the latter. Hoplerythrinus unitaeniatus possessed greater parasite species richness. Both hosts had an aggregate dispersion of parasites, and the abundance of C. marginatum, Contracaecum sp. and G. spectabilis correlated positively with the weight and length of the hosts. The condition factor was not affected by parasitism, but the abundance of C. marginatum and Contracaecum sp. increased when the condition factor of the hosts decreased. This is the fi rst report of G. seriei seriei for H. malabaricus and Pseudoproleptus sp. for H. unitaeniatus.

    Abstract:

    The objective of the present study was to discover the hematological indices of Hoplias malabaricus infected by larvae of Contracaecum sp. A total of 105 fish were collected from two lakes located in the municipal district of Pirassununga, Sao Paulo, Brazil, of which 95.2 % were infested by L3 larvae of Contracaecum sp., with an average intensity of 348.7 ± 231.55 helminths/fish. A total of 76 fish were analyzed to establish hematological parameters. Following analysis, it was found that there was a significant difference between hematological parameters Hct, erythrocytes (Er), thrombocytopenia (p = 0.01), and Hb (p = 0.02) in lakes A and B, while there was no significant difference for leukocyte (p = 0.68), mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular hemoglobin (p = 0.06), and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (p = 0.47). The intensity of infection correlated negatively with Er (rs = −0.42; p < 0.01) and positively for (rs = 0.48; p < 0.01). The high intensity of infection by Contracaecum sp. in H. malabaricus did not affect the health of the fish despite causing alterations in hematological variables.
