    Abstract:

    Abstract The incidence of Current conservation in (γ, p) and (γ, n) reactions at intermediate energies has been studied in the frame of the self-consistent RPA-SK3 continuum theory, fulfilling Current conservation. Two-body exchange Currents, originated from the momentum dependent terms of the Skyrme hamiltonian, are expressed in RPA-SK3 through an isovector Convection Current carrying an effective nucleon mass mSK(r) ⩽m. The 16 O (γ, p ) and 16 O (γ, n ) angular distributions at energies 60 MeV ⩽ Eγ ⩽ 300 MeV have been calculated and compared with experimental data. Connection is made with the implications of Current conservation in nuclear (e, e') charge responses calculated in the same theoretical framework.

    Abstract:

    Summary Present estimates of viscosity and other pertinent parameters make it unlikely that thermal Convection exists in the lower mantle. Convection may be considered from the point of view of an instability process for the upper mantle but the probable non-Newtonian nature of viscosity in the upper mantle makes this problem difficult to solve. Criteria are suggested which evaluate the pertinence of the Convection Current hypothesis to the upper mantle, and which are formally independent of the viscosity. Estimates of these quantities can be obtained from the model in which Newtonian viscosity is used. The postulate is introduced that, since these quantities are independent of the viscosity, their estimates will apply, to order of magnitude, to other models of viscosity. The estimates of (1) the time necessary to set up stable Convection and (2) the gravity anomaly expected over a convecting mantle are consistent with the hypothesis of Convection in the upper mantle. The estimates (3) of the depression of the geoid over a rising Current and (4) of the horizontal scale of the Convection cells appear to yield results inconsistent with Convection in the upper mantle.

  • Convection Currents in the Earth's mantle

    Abstract:

    Recent measurements by J. A. O'Keefe, A. Eckels, and R. K. Squires of the third zonal harmonic component of the earth's gravitational potential are used to determine the characteristics of a hypothetical Convection Current in the earth's mantle. The calculations are based on a Convection theory developed by F. A. Vening Meinesz. The Current's velocity is found to be 3.6 cm/yr, corresponding to an overturn time of 1.75×108 yr. The temperature perturbation is found to be 9.7°C. The flow is found to impose a distortion of 159 meters on the earth's crust and a distortion of 237 meters on the surface of the core. The mass loadings associated with these distortions were calculated as 5.3×107 dyne/cm2 at the top, and 8.9×107 dyne/cm2 at the bottom of the mantle. It is believed that the Vening Meinesz theory is capable of qualitatively explaining the results of O'Keefe and his co-workers. However, the required thermal efficiency is about 70 per cent, as compared with an estimated maximum of 4 per cent. It is considered improbable that convective efficiencies could be so large.
