    Abstract Objective Cancer patients need information provision to cope with their disease. However, only 20–60% of information provided during consultations is remembered. This study aimed to investigate whether oncologists’ use of trust-Conveying communication, characterized by communicating competence, honesty and caring, enhances patients’ memory. Moreover, we aimed to investigate if this hypothetical relationship is mediated by a reduction in psychophysiological arousal during the consultation. Methods An experimental design was used, allowing for conclusion about causality. Two versions of a scripted video-taped consultation were used in which the oncologist adopted either a standard or a trust-Conveying communication style. 97 cancer-naive individuals acted as analogue patients and were randomly assigned to watch one of the consultations. Results Free recall, assessed 24–28 h after viewing, was higher (p = 0.039) in the trust-Conveying Condition (65.3% versus 59.5%). Recognition did not differ (p = 0.502). Psychophysiological assessment during watching showed a smaller heart rate response in the trust-Conveying Condition (p = 0.037). No mediation effect nor an effect on electrodermal activity was found. Conclusion These results suggest that oncologists’ use of trust-Conveying communication could increase patients’ free recall of information and diminish their cardiovascular response. Practice implications The underlying mechanisms by which oncologists’ communication influences information recall warrants further investigation.

  • Random uncertainty modeling and vibration analysis of a straight pipe Conveying fluid

    Abstract:

    A new procedure on random uncertainty modeling is presented for vibration analysis of a straight pipe Conveying fluid when the pipe is fixed at both ends. Taking real Conveying Condition into account, several randomly uncertain loads and a motion constraint are imposed on the pipe and its corresponding equations of motion, which are established from the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory and the nonlinear Lagrange strain theory previously. Based on the stochastically nonlinear dynamic theory and the Galerkin method, the equations of motion are reduced to the finite discretized ones with randomly uncertain excitations, from which the vibration characteristics of the pipe are investigated in more detail by some previously developed numerical methods and a specific Poincare map. It is shown that, the vibration modes change not only with the frequency of the harmonic excitation but also with the strength and spectrum width of the randomly uncertain excitations, quasi-periodic-dominant responses can be observed clearly from the point sets in the Poincare’s cross-section. Moreover, the nonlinear elastic coefficient and location of the motion constraint can be adjusted properly to reduce the transverse vibration amplitude of the pipe.

  • Study on the Pressure Drop of Bend in Dense Phase Pneumatic Conveying of Pulverized Coal at High Pressure

    Experiments of dense-phase pneumatic Conveying of pulverized coal with different mean particle size using nitrogen were carried out in an experimental test facility with the Conveying pressure up to 4 MPa. The experimental data of pressure drop across bend was obtained under different Conveying Condition. Based on Barth's pneumatic Conveying theory,an empirical correlation of the additional pressure drop coefficient of bend was proposed taking account of the Conveying pressure and properties of pulverized coal. Comparing the pressure drop predicted by the correlation with experimental data,it is found that the calculation results agreed fairly well with the experimental data. Results indicate that,the pressure drop for coarse coal is higher than that of fine coal with the same mass flow rate,and the pressure drop increase with the decrease in superficial velocity in dense-phase pneumatic Conveying.

    Pneumatic Conveying has become a well established method of transporting materials in the resource and process industries. Erosion is a phenomenon that occurs in pneumatic Conveying pipeline due to the inherent nature of Conveying process. In pneumatic Conveying, particulate material is transported by the motive of compressed gas with velocities usually less than 60 m/s. In the present investigation, erosion tests were performed in order to study the wear behaviour and determine specific energy factors of pipeline material for the predictive models of wear in dense phase mode of pneumatic Conveying pipeline. These tests were performed on mild steel and aluminum surface with alumina and Ilmenite particles. Double disc method was used to measure the particle impact velocities with different powder mass flow rates at different compressed air pressures for erosion tests. Erosion rate and erosion behaviour were studied under the influence of solid particle erosion at dense phase Conveying Condition. Deformation and cutting energy factors were then determined for predicting wear based on the material removal mechanisms. These factors will then be incorporated in a generic software algorithm to predict the service life of pneumatic Conveying pipeline.
