Ordering Systems: Coordinative Practices and Artifacts in Architectural Design and Planning
Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), 2004Co-Authors: Kjeld Schmidt, Ina WagnerAbstract:In their Cooperative Effort, architects depend critically on elaborate coordinative practices and artifacts. The article presents, on the basis of an in-depth study of architectural work, an analysis of these practices and artifacts and shows that they are multilaterally interrelated and form complexes of interrelated practices and artifacts which we have dubbed ‘ordering systems’. In doing so, the article outlines an approach to investigating and conceiving of such practices.

The Review of Higher Education, 2013Co-Authors: Michael A OwensAbstract:This article stems from a grounded theory study of leadership among urban youth. It reports the perspective of students in a college preparation program by examining how they participated in leadership. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews, focus groups, and field observations of 20 incoming college freshmen. Students conceptualized their participation in the program's leadership practice as a process of purpose-driven Cooperative reciprocity. The findings suggested that all members of educational organizations make contributions to their organizations' total leadership capacity. The study concludes by encouraging further empirical work that explores leadership contributions by followers in urban educational organizations.
