Twenty-four parasite naive lambs were inoculated with a single dose of infective larvae of these two parasites 27 days prior to the start of the feeding experiment. Lambs were individually fed with either chicory (Cichorium intybus), birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus), sainfoin (Onobrychis viciifolia) or a ryegrass/lucerne mixture (control) for 17 days. Animals where then united to one flock and subjected to control feeding for another 11 days to test the sustainability of potentially lowered egg excretion generated by tanniferous forage feeding. Effect of sainfoin ( Onobrychis Viciifolia ) silage and hay against gastrointestinal nematodes in lambs

Twenty-four parasite nai¨ve lambs were inoculated with a single dose of infective larvae of these parasites 28 days prior to the start of the feeding experiment. Twenty-four days post-infection, 4 days prior to the start of the feeding experiment, animals were allocated to four groups according to egg excretion, liveweight and sex. GroupsAandBreceived sainfoin hay and control hay, respectively, for 16 days. Groups CandDwere fed on sainfoin silage or control silage for the same period. Feeds were offered ad libitumand on the basis of daily refusals were supplemented with concentrate in order to make them isoproteic and isoenergetic. Individual faecal egg counts on a dry matter basis (FECDM) were performed every 3–4 days and faecal cultures and packed cell volume (PCV) measurements were done weekly. After 16 days of experimental feeding, all animals were slaughtered and adult wormpopulations were determined. The consumption of conserved sainfoin was associated with a reduction of adult H. contortus (47%in the case of hay, P < 0.05; 49%in the case of silage, P = 0.075) but had little effect on adult C. curticei. Compared to the controls, H. contortus specific FECDM was reduced by 58% (P < 0.01) in the sainfoin hay group and by 48%(P = 0.075) in the sainfoin silage group. For both sainfoin feeds FECDMspecific to C. curticei were significantly decreased when compared to the control feeds (hay 81% and silage 74%, both tests P < 0.001). Our data suggest that different mechanisms were responsible for the reduction in FECDM in response to feeding tanniferous fodder. For H. contortus, the decrease seemed to be due to a nematocidal effect towards adult H. contortus. In contrast for C. curticei, the reduction in FECDM appeared to be a result of a reduced per capita fecundity. For both, hay and silage, an antiparasitic effect could be shown, offering promising perspectives for the use of conserved tanniferous fodder as a complementary control approach against GIN. # 2006 Elsevier B.V. Fauna helmintológica de ovinos provenientes da microrregião de Jaboticabal, estado de São Paulo, Brasil

For this, 66 animals naturally infected, four to 36 months of age, raised in pasture, were selected. The results of necropsy revealed the presence of seven genera and 12 species with the following prevalence and mean count: Haemonchus contortus: 100.0% (2947.2); Trichostrongylus colubriformis: 90.9% (3048.8); Cooperia curticei: 56.0% (256.5); Oesophagostomum columbianum: 48.4% (36.0); Cooperia punctata: 30.3% (94.5); Trichostrongylus axei: 22.7% (26.5); Strongyloides papillosus: 19.6% (83.0), Haemonchus contortus (L4): 7.5% (17.2), Cooperia pectinata: 10.6% (12.9), Trichuris ovis: 10.6 % (0.6); Cooperia spatulata 4.5% (0.3); Capillaria bovis: 4.5% (0.1). The mean parasitism of helminthswas 6524.7 per animal. Haemonchus contortus (adults and L4) and Trichostrongylus colubriformis corresponded to 45.4% and 46.7% of the average worm burden totally, respectively. Based in the results obtained in this study, can be concluded that the two most abundant species of helminths and important, the micro-region of Jaboticabal are Trichostrongylus colubriformis and Haemonchus contortus, and these two species amounted to 92.1% of the distribution percentage of helminths collected from all animals. These results demonstrate the importance of conducting a counts of eggs per gram of feces (EPG) in the herds of this region when FAMACHA is used on a particular property, since this method control does not allow to diagnostic the damage/clinical signs in animals infected by T. colubriformis, because this specie does not have hematophagism habit on animals

Para tanto, foram utilizados 66 animais naturalmente infectados, de quatro a 36 meses de idade, criados em regime extensivo. Os resultados necroscópicos revelaram a presença de sete gêneros e 12 espécies, com a seguinte prevalência e a média de parasitismo: Haemonchus contortus: 100,0% (2947,2); Trichostrongylus colubriformis: 90,9% (3048,8); Cooperia curticei: 56,0% (256,5); Oesophagostomum columbianum: 48,4% (36,0); Cooperia punctata: 30,3% (94,5); Trichostrongylus axei: 22,7% (26,5); Strongyloides papillosusi: 19,6% (83,0); Haemonchus contortus (L4): 7,5% (17,2); Cooperia pectinatai: 10,6% (12,9); Trichuris ovis: 10,6% (0,6); Cooperia spatulata 4,5% (0,3); Capillaria bovis: 4,5% (0,1). A carga parasitária média foi de 6.524,7 helmintos por animal. Haemonchus contortus (Adultos e L4) e Trichostrongylus colubriformis corresponderam a 45,4% e 46,7% da carga parasitária média total, respectivamente. Pode-se concluir que as duas espécies de helmintos mais abundantes e importantes da microrregião de Jaboticabal/São Paulo foram Trichostrongylus colubriformis e Haemonchus contortus, sendo que essas duas espécies perfizeram 92,1% da distribuição percentual dos helmintos recolhidos de todos os animais. Tais resultados demonstram a importância em se realizar um monitoramento das contagens de ovos por grama de fezes (OPG) dos rebanhos desta região, quando o método FAMACHA for empregado em uma determinada propriedade, uma vez que este método de controle, geralmente, não permite diagnosticar os danos/sinais clínicos desencadeados nos animais pelo T. colubriformis, em função de essa espécie não possuir hábito de hematofagismo sobre os hospedeiros

Efecto in vitro de los taninos condensados de las plantas leucaena leucocephala, calliandra calothyrsus y flemingia macrophylla sobre huevos y larvas l3 de nematodos gastrointestinales de ovinos

Colombian sheep herd amounts to 2 million head across the country. The gastrointestinal nematode infections have been linked to major economic losses for this sector in tropical regions. The growing resistance to anthelmintics traditional medicines of these nematodes is the result of improper handling of pharmaceutical products, lack of mechanization, among other factors; therefore be implemented therapeutic alternatives that are sustainable and effective from an environmental perspective; so that the use of medicinal plants with anthelmintic activity as Leucaena leucocephala, Calliandra calothyrsus and Flemingia macrophylla could pose as an alternative solution to the problem of resistance of these parasites to research products alopáticos. In this investigation in vitro effect was evaluated condensed tannins from plant extracts L. leucocephala, C. calothyrsus and F. macrophylla on eggs and larvae L3 of gastrointestinal nematodes of sheep. Methodology: training phases and final test were developed thanks to the facilitacion helminthology laboratory in the Colombian Agricultural Research Corporation (CORPOICA) of Tibaitata; the process of obtaining condensed tannins was carried out by the laboratory of chemistry at the University of Tolima (Ibague); different concentrations of these tannins from which testing inhibition of hatching and removal of the cuticle were conducted, prefetching eggs and larvae infective L3 stage, through incubation and cultivation thereof from a naturally infested sheep. Morphometric identification of L3 larvae determining percentage participation of each genus and species was performed. Results: In the morphometric identifying the most representative percentage was 58% for Haemonchus contortus followed by 26% of Trichostrongylus falculatus, by contrast Cooperia curticei recorded 1%. Extracts of Calliandra calothyrsus condensed tannins had higher efficacy in inhibiting egg hatching, both the D50 1075.25 ug / ml as the D99 3601.23 ug / ml, the Flemingia macrophylla and Leucaena leucocephala, inhibited egg hatching process significantly since the higher dosage strength showed a better response, unlike C. calothyrsus, which was not evident a dose dependent effect. The results obtained by analysis Logyt Probit in removing the cuticle were performed based on the average values in each test, the D50 better efficacy showed was the extract condensed tannin C.calothyrsus 1.915 ug / ml, with respect to extracts from the other two plants, while D99 F.macrophylla showed more effective (326 ug / ml). All extracts inhibited the elimination of cuticle from the lowest concentration (31.25 ug / ml) and the effect was dose dependent; percent inhibition with the higuest concentration (1000 mg/ml) were respectively 99%, 98% and 92% for Calliandra, Leucaena and Flemingia. La creciente resistencia a medicamentos antihelmínticos tradicionales de estos nematodos es el resultado del inadecuado manejo de los productos farmacéuticos, la falta de tecnificación, entre otros factores; por lo cual se deben implementar alternativas terapéuticas que sean sostenibles y eficaces desde la perspectiva ambiental; es así, que el uso de plantas medicinales con actividad antihelmíntica como la Leucaena leucocephala, Calliandra calothyrsus y Flemingia macrophylla, podrían plantearse como una solución alternativa al problema de resistencia de éstos parásitos a productos alopáticos.En ésta investigación se evaluó el efecto in vitro de los taninos condensados de extractos de las plantas L. leucocephala, C. calothyrsus y F. macrophylla sobre huevos y larvas L3 de nematodos gastrointestinales de ovinos. Compared to the controls, H. contortus specific FECDM was reduced by 58% ( P P = 0.075) in the sainfoin silage group. For both sainfoin feeds FECDM specific to C. curticei were significantly decreased when compared to the control feeds (hay 81% and silage 74%, both tests P H. contortus , the decrease seemed to be due to a nematocidal effect towards adult H. contortus . In contrast for C. curticei , the reduction in FECDM appeared to be a result of a reduced per capita fecundity. For both, hay and silage, an antiparasitic effect could be shown, offering promising perspectives for the use of conserved tanniferous fodder as a complementary control approach against GIN.
