Published Weekly Since 1932 by The Magrath Trading Company 35e Magrath Town Celebration Another Success!! This past weekend the Town of Magrath celebrated its 102nd birthday with another fun-filled celebration. Things kicked off on Thursday evening with the start of the annual Family/Community Softball Tournament Participating families were the Strongs, Jim Cook, Jackson, Foggin, Workman, Holladay, N. Cook, and Longbottham along with three community teams. The champs of the ‘A’ Division with four wins was the Jim Cook family who skimmed to the big win in the 7th inning over the Town C team. The winners of the ‘B’ Division with 3 wins and 1 loss was the Cal Alston family who defeated the Strong family in the final game. The winners of the ‘C’ Division was the LongBottham family with a win over the Foggins in the final and the winners of the ‘D’ Division was the Town A team who were able to defeat the Jackson family in the finals. Friday evening was the Annual Bicycle & Fun Run of 5, 10 or 15 Km starting at the Treasury Branch. All participants got a cap and treats at the end. All who participated had a great time at this family event. There was also a Teen Video Dance Friday evening. The excitement didn’t end there. At 3:00 a.m. the fire department were called to an early lighting of the Bonfire. Fortunately, with some hard work and hurrying they were able to put together another bonfire for Saturday evenings entertainment. Saturday morning the Lions held their annual Pancake breakfast followed by the Parade with this years theme of “Still Growing Strong”. Prizes for the parade were as follows: Motorized - Classic Car - 1st 1953 Hudson belonging to Tomlinsons, 2nd 1949 Dodge, 3rd 1977 Midget owned by Wocknitz’. Antique Car - 1st 1930 Model A (Wocknitz), 2nd 1928 Model A (Wocknitz), 3rd 1914 Model T (Wocknitz). Decorated Car - 1st Dale Jorgensen. Adult Parade‘Categories - Family - 1st Gurneys, 2nd Steele, 3rd Harker. Commercial - 1st Alberta Treasury Branch, 2nd Garden City Greenhouse, 3rd S.A.S.H. Fraternal - 1st Magrath 1st Ward, 2nd Magrath 2nd Ward, 3rd Magrath Institute. Club - 1st Soccer, 2nd Museum, 3rd Cloggers. Humorous - 1st Bart Simpson Quad. The afternoon was filled with fun with Children’s races, Craft & Hobby show, Free swimming, Lawnmower races, ball games and the Outdoor Variety Show featuring many local talents. The evening started with Beef on a Bun and then the Program in the Tom Karren Gym with Greg & Elizabeth Strong as hosts. At about 10:30 the fireworks, bonfire and dance got under way. The day was a great success. Many thanks go to all those who took part in any way to make the day the success that it was. It takes many hands and many hours to prepare the events so that we can all enjoy!! Thanks again. For more information Phone Mary at 752-3661 1 SPORTS _______________BASEBALL South Chief Major A Baseball A pitcher’s duel turned into a one-man show Sunday afternoon as a dominant effort by South Chief starter Cody Gough led the local area all-stars to a 9-0 victory over Fort McMurray at the 2001 Prairie Major A Baseball championships. Gough picked up the pitching win with a five- inning, two-hit shutout effort that Lee McTaggart picked up and finished in the sixth, giving South Chief (1-1) their first win of the championship tournament and dropping Fort McMurray (1-1) back to the .500 mark. Cody threw 54 pitches and only 11 balls. Jeff Ripley also plays on the team and was a great help with his hitting bringing the South Chiefs in control early in the game. On Monday the South Chiefs were up against Regina North as Regina won a hard-fought battle with a score of 3-0. South Chief s Adam Depew and Jeff Ripley combined to scatter nine hits. | HOCKEY ~ Attention All Hockey Players!! Coming to Magrath!! I SLO-PITCH r-- The Mike Lloyd Trucking men’s slo-pitch team from Magrath swept both games from the Cardston Pro Shop last Wednesday night to win the Chief Mountain Men’s Slo-pitch league title. The wins, 6-0 and 7-1, gave Mike Lloyd Trucking an 18-2 league record this season. Team members include Clint Hillmer, Steve Veale, Colin Heninger, Ken Robinson, Trevor Millward, Bruce Tricsli, Brett Nish, Shawn Pitcher, Bryce Strate, Dustin Godionton, Kenny Wright, Kevin Taylor, Ron Strate and Todd Jones. The league playoffs begin tonight (Wednesday) with round robin action. Cook Ranching hosts the Salmons at 6:30 p.m. while Mike Lloyd Trucking hosts Prairie Auto at 6:30 and the Cardston Pro Shop at 8:00 p.m. Tomorrow (Thursday), Cook Ranching hosts Pro Hardware and Home Hardware (both from Cardston) at 6:30 and 8:00 p.m. All games are at the new Centennial Park. CHARITY GAME Since it’s inception in 1992, the Southern Region Emergency Services Society’s mandate has been to improve the level of emergency services in Magrath and surrounding communities. A new truck is being bought to improve their service. >'• A fundraiser for the new vehicle has been set for August 2. Through the efforts of Mike Lloyd Trucking from Raymond, a charity slo-pitch game has been scheduled for this night at the new ball diamonds in Magrath. Mike Lloyd sponsors a men’s team in the Cardston league and is pleased to offer his team’s assistance in raising money for the Southern Region Emergency Services Society. The Mike Lloyd Trucking team will play a team from Lethbridge’s newest radio station - Rock 106. Through the scheduling of Rock 106’s morning man Fraser Tuff and the team’s manager (Ron Strate) the charity game will be played at 6:30 p.m. While there is no admission prices for the game, a beef on a bun will be served at 6:00 p.m. to raise the money for the association. The cost will be $5/person. Everyone is welcome to attend. A 50/50 draw will also be made during the game. Both did very well. Lois got a Gold place with her quilt. Hazel received Silver for her embroidered pillow cases, a 3rd for her Baby quilt and 3rd for her Punch work table cloth. All the first and second place winners compete in the Provincials in Lethbridge beginning July 23. The Handcraft section of the Provincials will be held at Gilbert Patterson school. The pasta can be bought here in the Trading Company. Acini Di Pepe Salad 1 cup sugar 2 Tbsp. Flour 2 beaten eggs 1 1/3 c. pineapple juice Cook till thick and bubbly. (I use juice from the canned fruit.) Cook 1/2 pkg. of Acini Di Pepe. Cool. Add cooked sauce. Add Fruit: 1 large can Fruit Cocktail, drained 2 cans Mandarine Oranges, drained 1 cup Pineapple, drained 1 cup each Red & Green Grapes 1 cup Coconut 1 cup Mini Marshmallows 1 cup Nuts (almonds slivered, opt) 1 large container of Cool Whip Mix well. Can be made night before. This is a very large salad. I cooked too much pasta so I used what I wanted and then froze the rest for use at another time. Pasta froze well. ; , Another great recipe which is quick & easy. Cornflake Maclntosh Drop Cookies 4 boxes Macintosh Toffee, broken up 4 Tbsp. Milk 2 Tbsp. Butter or Margarine ■ Put this in a heavy sauce pan and heat till toffee is melted. Then add: 4 cups Cornflakes Mix till coated. Drop by spoon full’ on wax paper till cool and enjoy. Carol McCoy PRIORITIES j The older I get, the more I enjoy Saturday mornings. Perhaps it’s the j quiet solitude that comes with being the first to rise, or maybe it's the unbounded joy of not having to be at work. Either way, the first few hours of a Saturday morning are most enjoyable. A few weeks ago, I was shuffling toward the kitchen with the morning paper my hand. What began as a typical Saturday morning turned ■ into one of those lessons that life seems to hand you from time to time. Let me tell you about it. I turned the volume up on my radio in order to listen to a Saturday morning talk show. I heard an older sounding chap with a golden voice. You know the kind, he sounded like he should be in the broadcasting business himself. He was talking about *a thousand marbles" to someone named “Tom". I was intrigued and sat down to listen to what he had to say. c ■> “Well, Tom, it sure sounds like you’re busy with your job. I'm sure ? they pay you well, but its a shame you have to be away from home and your family so much. Hard to believe a young fellow should have s to work sixty or seventy hours a week to make ends meet Too bad you missed your daughter’s dance recital." He continued, “Let me tell you something, Tom...something that has helped me keep a good perspective on my own priorities.” And that’s when he began to explain his theory of a “thousand marbles”. “You see, I sat down one day and did a little arithmetic. The average . person lives about 75 years. I know, some live more and some live ■ less, but on average, folks live about 75 years." “Now then, I multiplied 75 times 52 and I came up with 3900 which is the number of Saturdays that the average person has in their entire lifetime. Now stick with me, Tom, I'm getting to the important part." t It took me until I was 55 years old to think about all this in any detail,"■ he went on, “and by that time I had lived through over 2800 Saturdays. I got to thinking that if I lived to be 75,1 only had about a thousand of them left to enjoy.“ “So I went to a toy store and bought j every single marble they had. I ended up having to visit 3 toy stores to round up 1000 marbles. I took them home and putthem inside of a large, dear plastic container right here in my workshop next to the , radio. Every Saturday since then, I have taken one marble out and : thrown it away." “I found that by watching the marbles diminish, I focused more on the really important things in life. There is nothing like watching your time here on this earth run out to help get your priorities straight.” ' “Now let me tell you one last thing before I sign-off with you and take my lovely wife out for breakfest. This morning, I took the very last marble out of the container. I figure if I make it until next Saturday, then God has blessed me with a little extra time to be with my loved ones... “It was nice to talk to you Tom; I hope you spend more time with your loved ones, and I hope to meet you again someday. Have a good morning!” You could have heard a pin drop when he finished. Even the show’s moderator didn't have anything to say for a few moments. I guess he gave us ail a lot to think about. I had planned to do some work that morning, then go to the gym. Instead, I went upstairs and woke my wife up with a kiss. “C’mon honey, I’m taking you and the kids to breakfast.” “What brought this on?” she asked with a smile. “Oh, nothing special,” I said. “Its just been a long time since we spent a Saturday together with the kids. Hey, can we stop at a toy store while we’re out? I need to buy some marbles-* . TOWN OF MAGRATH - WATER UPDATE The continuing dry conditions have worsened with crops showing signs of stress and grass turning brown from green and this is reflected by a marked increase in water usage. Daily consumption through the waterplant has jumped from 600,000 gallons to nearly 1,000,000 gallons and it is imperative that this use be reduced or we will be faced with further restrictions and penalties under the Water Sharing Agreement signed by users in the St. Mary system. Please use this precious commodity sparingly and adhere to the policy set earlier which is those east of 1st St. West water on even calendar days and those west of 1st St. West on odd calendar days. Not everyone is following this and we are using too much water at the present time and it is noted that some are watering the whole 24 hour period when it is not necessary. Please use only the minimum water required and if available, use the irrigation. The possibility of a ban on all outside watering is very distinct unless all involved cooperate fully. We appreciated fully the efforts of those who have been responsible and are adhering to this voluntary policy and exhort all users to be responsible and help us through this shortage. Flooding with open hoses and pipes is prohibited by by-law and this type of use can result in penalties. These short skits will provide an opportunity for visitors to acquire greater knowledge about the local history in Southern Alberta. During the months of July and August, 2001, there will be two daily performances of three plays entitled: The Marcella Sheran Story, Bad Trader and The Shooting of Dave Akers. “The creative genesis behind this summer project is Kelly Frewin, who wrote the scripts for these plays and he is also one of the actors,” said Aboriginal & Special Events Coordinator, Rob First Charger. “Frewin’s debut acting career with Fort Whoop-up started last summer with staff members Sally Dougherty and Richard Shockley. The original cast from last year will be returning once again this summer along with new cast member James Haney. The plays will be a revamp of The Marcella Sheran Story, Bad Trader and a new play entitled, The Killing of Dave Akers. The Sheran and Akers stories are based on actual events. The Bad Trader is a “migjtt have been story” but uses actual characters associated with Fort Whoop-up.” “The opportunity to try my hand at playwriting was too tempting to turn down,” said Kelly Frewin. “The history of this era is colourful and it provides a wealth of information to draw ideas from.” Kelly has been involved in theatre for 10 years, but last year was his first opportunity to write. “The members of the Fort Players are the creative force behind the writing. I simply write the words - they bring the plays to life.” These daily performances are scheduled for 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. at Fort Whoop-up. The general public is encouraged to visit the Fort and witness life as it was in the late 19th century era. Chelsey s battle with Sturge Weber Sydrome (a malformation of blood on the face and brain) and Glaucoma from 13 months has been an emotional rollercoaster and very trying at times. “Going to the Maury Show was a once in a lifetime event for us to be able to tell our story,” says mom Ione. “To let people know what SWS is, and that just because you may be different on the outside or the in, that you can love and be hurt the same as everyone else.” Chelsey sang the song “How Do I Live” and dedicated it to her Mom. Her mom is so very proud of her. “She is so strong and brave through all life has thrown her way.”... Chelsey says her experience of going to New York and appearing on the Maury Show was thrilling and “I got to see things I have never seen before and meet Maury and his staff. We were treated to all New York had to offer including chauffeur rides wherever we had to go.” Mom Ione says, “Maury was a very sweet and compassionate man, and his . staff did all they could to make our trip as memorable as possible. We would like them all, as going to New York was scary for us both.” Ione and Chelsey appeared on the Maury Show yesterday, July 10th. His batde with cancer was fought with courage and equanimity. John was the beloved husband of Elizabeth (Orosz), and the father of Leah and Andrew. He was the devoted son of Gladys (Phil) Sheer of Magrath; and the brother of Bryan (Judy) Sheer, (children: Kathy, Jason, Wesley), of Calgary, AB and Gregory Sheer of Magrath. John was predeceased by his father Phil, and nephew Bradley. We assessed the relationship between residential RF-EMF exposure from mobile Phone base stations, residential presence of indoor sources, personal cell Phone and Cordless Phone use, and children's cognitive function at 5–6 years of age. Methods Cross-sectional study on children aged 5–6 years from the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD) study, the Netherlands (n=2354). Residential RF-EMF exposure from mobile Phone base stations was estimated with a 3D geospatial radio wave propagation model. Residential presence of indoor sources (Cordless Phone base stations and Wi-Fi) and children's cell Phone and Cordless Phone use was reported by the mother. Speed of information processing, inhibitory control, cognitive flexibility, and visuomotor coordination was assessed using the Amsterdam Neuropsychological Tasks. Results Residential presence of RF-EMF indoor sources was associated with an improved speed of information processing. Higher residential RF-EMF exposure from mobile Phone base stations and presence of indoor sources was associated with an improved inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility whereas we observed a reduced inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility with higher personal Cordless Phone use. Higher residential RF-EMF exposure from mobile Phone base stations was associated with a reduced visuomotor coordination whereas we observed an improved visuomotor coordination with residential presence of RF-EMF indoor sources and higher personal cell Phone use. Conclusions We found inconsistent associations between different sources of RF-EMF exposure and cognitive function in children aged 5–6 years.

Methods This study was embedded in the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development (ABCD) birth cohort study. When children were about five years old, school and residential exposure to RF-EMF from base stations was assessed with a geospatial model (NISMap) and from indoor sources (Cordless Phone/WiFi) using parental self-reports. Parents also reported their children’s use of mobile or Cordless Phones. When children were seven years old, we evaluated sleep quality as measured with the Child Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) filled in by parents. Of eight CSHQ subscales, we evaluated sleep onset delay, sleep duration, night wakenings, parasomnias and daytime sleepiness with logistic or negative binomial regression models, adjusting for child’s age and sex and indicators of socio-economic position of the parents. We evaluated the remaining three subscales (bedtime resistance, sleep anxiety, sleep disordered breathing) as unrelated outcomes (negative control) because these were a priori hypothesised not to be associated with RF-EMF. Results Sleep onset delay, night wakenings, parasomnias and daytime sleepiness were not associated with residential exposure to RF-EMF from base stations. Sleep duration scores were associated with RF-EMF levels from base stations. Higher use mobile Phones was associated with less favourable sleep duration, night wakenings and parasomnias, and also with bedtime resistance. Cordless Phone use was not related to any of the sleeping scores. Conclusion Given the different results across the evaluated RF-EMF exposure sources and the observed association between mobile Phone use and the negative control sleep scale, our study does not support the hypothesis that it is the exposure to RF-EMF that is detrimental to sleep quality in 7-year old children, but potentially other factors that are related to mobile Phone usage.

Together with cell Phones, Cordless Phones represent the main exposure source of radiofrequency-electromagnetic fields to the head. Therefore, we assessed the association between maternal cell Phone and Cordless Phone use during pregnancy and teacher-reported and maternal-reported child behaviour problems at age 5. Methods The study was embedded in the Amsterdam Born Children and their Development study, a population-based birth cohort study in Amsterdam, the Netherlands (2003–2004). Teachers and mothers reported child behaviour problems using the Strength and Difficulties Questionnaire at age 5. Maternal cell Phone and Cordless Phone use during pregnancy was asked when children were 7 years old. Results A total of 2618 children were included. As compared to non-users, those exposed to prenatal cell Phone use showed an increased but non-significant association of having teacher-reported overall behaviour problems, although without dose-response relationship with the number of calls (OR=2.12 (95% CI 0.95 to 4.74) for <1 call/day, OR=1.58 (95% CI 0.69 to 3.60) for 1–4 calls/day and OR=2.04 (95% CI 0.86 to 4.80) for ≥5 calls/day). ORs for having teacher-reported overall behaviour problems across categories of Cordless Phone use were below 1 or close to unity. Associations of maternal cell Phone and Cordless Phone use with maternal-reported overall behaviour problems remained non-significant. Non-significant associations were found for the specific behaviour problem subscales. Conclusion Our results do not suggest that maternal cell Phone or Cordless Phone use during pregnancy increases the odds of behaviour problems in their children.

Experiment: antioxidants reduced ROS production from RF radiation. Analogy: there is an increased risk in subjects exposed to extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields. Conclusion. They were aged 20–80 years and 18–75 years, respectively, at the time of diagnosis. Only cases with histopathological verification of the tumour were included. Population-based controls, matched on age and gender, were used. Exposures were assessed by questionnaire. The whole reference group was used in the unconditional regression analysis adjusted for gender, age, year of diagnosis, and socio-economic index. In total, 1498 (89%) cases and 3530 (87%) controls participated. Mobile Phone use increased the risk of glioma, OR = 1.3, 95% CI = 1.1–1.6 overall, increasing to OR = 3.0, 95% CI = 1.7–5.2 in the >25 year latency group. Use of Cordless Phones increased the risk to OR = 1.4, 95% CI = 1.1–1.7, with highest risk in the >15–20 years latency group yielding OR = 1.7, 95% CI = 1.1–2.5. The OR increased statistically significant both per 100 h of cumulative use, and per year of latency for mobile and Cordless Phone use. Highest ORs overall were found for ipsilateral mobile or Cordless Phone use, OR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.4–2.2 and OR = 1.7, 95% CI = 1.3–2.1, respectively. The highest risk was found for glioma in the temporal lobe. First use of mobile or Cordless Phone before the age of 20 gave higher OR for glioma than in later age groups. © 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified in May, 2011 RF-EMF as a group 2B, i.e. a 'possible' human carcinogen. The aim of this study was to further explore the relationship between especially long-term (>10 years) use of wireless Phones and the development of malignant brain tumours. We conducted a new case-control study of brain tumour cases of both genders aged 18-75 years and diagnosed during 2007-2009. One population-based control matched on gender and age (within 5 years) was used to each case. Here, we report on malignant cases including all available controls. Exposures on e.g. use of mobile Phones and Cordless Phones were assessed by a self-administered questionnaire. Unconditional logistic regression analysis was performed, adjusting for age, gender, year of diagnosis and socio-economic index using the whole control sample. Of the cases with a malignant brain tumour, 87% (n=593) participated, and 85% (n=1,368) of controls in the whole study answered the questionnaire. The odds ratio (OR) for mobile Phone use of the analogue type was 1.8, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.04 -3.3, increasing with >25 years of latency (time since first exposure) to an OR=3.3, 95% CI=1.6-6.9. Strength: meta-analysis of case-control studies gave odds ratio (OR) = 1.90, 95% confidence interval (CI) = 1.31–2.76 with highest cumulative exposure. Consistency: the risk increased with latency, meta-analysis gave in the 10+ years’ latency group OR = 1.62, 95% CI = 1.20–2.19. Specificity: increased risk for glioma was in the temporal lobe. Using meningioma cases as comparison group still increased the risk. Temporality: highest risk was in the 20+ years’ latency group, OR = 2.01, 95% CI =1.41–2.88, for wireless Phones. Biological gradient: cumulative use of wireless Phones increased the risk. Plausibility: animal studies showed an increased incidence of glioma and malignant schwannoma in rats exposed to radiofrequency (RF) radiation. There is increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) from RF radiation. Coherence: there is a change in the natural history of glioma and increasing incidence. Experiment: antioxidants reduced ROS production from RF radiation. Analogy: there is an increased risk in subjects exposed to extremely low-frequency electromagnetic fields. Conclusion. RF radiation should be regarded as a human carcinogen causing glioma

They were aged 20–80 years and 18–75 years, respectively, at the time of diagnosis. Only cases with histopathological verification of the tumour were included. Population-based controls, matched on age and gender, were used. Exposures were assessed by questionnaire. The whole reference group was used in the unconditional regression analysis adjusted for gender, age, year of diagnosis, and socio-economic index. In total, 1498 (89%) cases and 3530 (87%) controls participated. Mobile Phone use increased the risk of glioma, OR = 1.3, 95% CI = 1.1–1.6 overall, increasing to OR = 3.0, 95% CI = 1.7–5.2 in the >25 year latency group. Use of Cordless Phones increased the risk to OR = 1.4, 95% CI = 1.1–1.7, with highest risk in the >15–20 years latency group yielding OR = 1.7, 95% CI = 1.1–2.5. The OR increased statistically significant both per 100 h of cumulative use, and per year of latency for mobile and Cordless Phone use. Highest ORs overall were found for ipsilateral mobile or Cordless Phone use, OR = 1.8, 95% CI = 1.4–2.2 and OR = 1.7, 95% CI = 1.3–2.1, respectively. The highest risk was found for glioma in the temporal lobe. First use of mobile or Cordless Phone before the age of 20 gave higher OR for glioma than in later age groups. © 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classified in May, 2011 RF-EMF as a group 2B, i.e. a 'possible' human carcinogen. The aim of this study was to further explore the relationship between especially long-term (>10 years) use of wireless Phones and the development of malignant brain tumours. We conducted a new case-control study of brain tumour cases of both genders aged 18-75 years and diagnosed during 2007-2009. One population-based control matched on gender and age (within 5 years) was used to each case. Here, we report on malignant cases including all available controls. Exposures on e.g. use of mobile Phones and Cordless Phones were assessed by a self-administered questionnaire. Unconditional logistic regression analysis was performed, adjusting for age, gender, year of diagnosis and socio-economic index using the whole control sample. Of the cases with a malignant brain tumour, 87% (n=593) participated, and 85% (n=1,368) of controls in the whole study answered the questionnaire. The odds ratio (OR) for mobile Phone use of the analogue type was 1.8, 95% confidence interval (CI)=1.04 -3.3, increasing with >25 years of latency (time since first exposure) to an OR=3.3, 95% CI=1.6-6.9. Digital 2G mobile Phone use rendered an OR=1.6, 95% CI=0.996-2.7, increasing with latency >15-20 years to an OR=2.1, 95% CI=1.2-3.6. The results for Cordless Phone use were OR=1.7, 95% CI=1.1-2.9, and, for latency of 15-20 years, the OR=2.1, 95% CI=1.2-3.8. Few participants had used a Cordless Phone for >20-25 years. Digital type of wireless Phones (2G and 3G mobile Phones, Cordless Phones) gave increased risk with latency >1-5 years, then a lower risk in the following latency groups, but again increasing risk with latency >15-20 years. Ipsilateral use resulted in a higher risk than contralateral mobile and Cordless Phone use. Higher ORs were calculated for tumours in the temporal and overlap- ping lobes. Using the meningioma cases in the same study as reference entity gave somewhat higher ORs indicating that the results were unlikely to be explained by recall or observational bias. This study confirmed previous results of an association between mobile and Cordless Phone use and malignant brain tumours. These findings provide support for the hypothesis that RF-EMFs play a role both in the initiation and promotion stages of carcinogenesis.

To characterize sources and associated variability, we studied the differences and correlations in exposure patterns between children aged 8 to 18 and their parents, over the course of the day, by age, by activity pattern, and for different metrics of exposure.; Using portable RF-EMF measurement devices, we collected simultaneous real-time personal measurements of RF-EMF over 24 to 72 h in 294 parent-child pairs from Denmark, the Netherlands, Slovenia, Switzerland, and Spain. The devices measured the power flux density (mW/m; 2; ) in 16 different frequency bands every 4 s, and activity diary Apps kept by the participants were used to collect time-activity information in real-time. We analyzed their exposures by activity, for the different source constituents of exposure: downlink (radiation emitted from mobile Phone base stations), uplink (transmission from Phone to base station), broadcast, DECT (digital enhanced Cordless telecommunications) and Wi-Fi. We looked at the correlations between parents and children overall, during day (06:00-22.00) and night (22:00-06:00) and while spending time at home.; The mean of time-weighted average personal exposures was 0.16 mW/m; 2; for children and 0.15 mW/m; 2; for parents, on average predominantly originating from downlink sources (47% for children and 45% for parents), followed by uplink (18% and 27% respectively) and broadcast (25% and 19%). On average, exposure for downlink and uplink were highest during the day, and for Wi-Fi and DECT during the evening. Exposure during activities where most of the time is spent (home, school and work) was relatively low whereas exposure during travel and outside activities was higher. Exposure to uplink increased with age among young people, while DECT decreased slightly. Exposure to downlink, broadcast, and Wi-Fi showed no obvious trend with age. We found that exposure to total RF-EMF is correlated among children and their parents (R; spearman; = 0.45), especially while at home (0.62) and during the night (0.60). Correlations were higher for environmental sources such as downlink (0.57) and broadcast (0.62) than for usage-related exposures such as uplink (0.29).; The generation gap between children and their parents is mostly evident in uplink exposure, due to more and longer uplink and Cordless Phone calls among parents, and their tendency to spend slightly more time in activities with higher environmental RF-EMF exposure, such as travel. Despite these differences in personal behavior, exposure to RF-EMF is moderately correlated between children and their parents, especially exposures resulting from environmental RF-EMF sources.
