Asymptotic error analysis of diversity schemes on arbitrarily Correlated Rayleigh channels
IEEE Transactions on Communications, 2010Co-Authors: Shuo Liu, Julian Cheng, Norman C. BeaulieuAbstract:Asymptotic error rate expressions are derived for multi-branch equal gain combining and selection combining operating on arbitrarily Correlated Rayleigh fading channels. These closed-form solutions are used to provide rapid and accurate estimation of the error rates in large signal-to-noise ratio regions. More importantly, they reveal additional insights into the transmission characteristics of linear diversity combining schemes operating on Correlated Rayleigh fading channels. It is shown that the asymptotic error rates over Correlated branches can be obtained by scaling the asymptotic error rates over independent branches with a factor, det(M), where det(M) is the determinant of the normalized channel correlation matrix. This relationship is valid for both coherent and noncoherent signalings. A similar relationship is also established for the outage probabilities of fading wireless systems employing multi-branch diversity reception.

ICC - BER of MFSK With Postdetection Switch-and-Stay Combining in Correlated Rayleigh and Rician Fading
2007 IEEE International Conference on Communications, 2007Co-Authors: Sasan Haghani, Norman C. BeaulieuAbstract:The performance of M-ary frequency shift keying (MFSK) with dual-branch postdetection switch-and-stay combining (SSC) in Correlated Rayleigh and Rician fading is studied. Closed-form expressions are derived for the average bit error rate (BER) of MFSK with postdetection SSC in Correlated Rayleigh and Rician fading. Optimum switching thresholds that minimize the average BER are obtained. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are presented to test the validity of the analytical results. The performance of MFSK with dual-branch postdetection SSC is compared to the performance of MFSK with dual-branch predetection SSC. The effects of correlation, fading parameter, fading power imbalance and switching threshold on the relative performance of the postdetection SSC compared to predetection SSC are examined.

ICC - Closed-Form BER Expressions for BPSK Using MRC with Multiple Interferers in Arbitrarily Correlated Rayleigh Fading
2007 IEEE International Conference on Communications, 2007Co-Authors: Xiaodi Zhang, Norman C. BeaulieuAbstract:An exact and closed-form expression for the average bit error rate (BER) of coherent binary phase-shift keying (BPSK) using maximal ratio combining (MRC) in the presence of multiple cochannel interfering users is derived for Correlated Rayleigh fading. Under the assumption that the branch gains of the desired user signal and interfering signals experience Correlated Rayleigh fading with the same correlation eigenvector matrix, as is the case for receiver diversity in an omnidirectional scattering environment, this BER expression is valid for arbitrary correlation structure such as 2-D and 3-D channel correlation models, and applys for an arbitrary number of interfering users and an arbitrary number of receiver antennas.

Performance of dual-diversity predetection EGC in Correlated Rayleigh fading with unequal branch SNRs
IEEE Transactions on Communications, 2002Co-Authors: Ranjan K. Mallik, Moe Z. Win, Jack Harriman WintersAbstract:The bit error probability (BEP) for coherent detection of binary signals with dual-diversity predetection equal gain combining is derived using the Beaulieu (1991) series. In particular, we consider a Correlated Rayleigh fading channel with unequal branch signal-to-noise ratios. The BEP expression is in terms of the power correlation coefficient of the branches, is easy to compute, and depicts clearly the effect of Correlated fading on the error performance.

International Symposium on Information Theory, 2000Co-Authors: Ranjan K. Mallik, Moe Z. WinAbstract:We present closed-form expressions for the single-user capacity over slow nonselective Correlated Rayleigh fading channels having equal branch powers and the same correlation between any pair of branches. Maximal ratio combining (MRC) is used and three adaptive transmission schemes are analyzed: (1) optimal simultaneous power and rate adaptation, (2) optimal rate adaptation with constant transmit power, (3) channel inversion with fixed rate.

Performance of MIMO MRC in Correlated Rayleigh fading environments
2005 IEEE 61st Vehicular Technology Conference, 1Co-Authors: Alberto Zanella, Marco Chiani, Moe Z. WinAbstract:In this paper, we investigate the statistical properties of the largest and the smallest eigenvalue of Wishart matrices. The results we obtained are very general as they can be used for central and non central unCorrelated and central Correlated Wishart. Furthermore, we derive a very concise expression for the probability density function of the largest and the smallest eigenvalue of a Wishart matrix. Numerical results for multi-input-multi-output with maximal ratio combining show that in case of Correlated Rayleigh fading, the presence of correlation plays a different role depending on the value of signal-to-noise ratio.

GLOBECOM - Performance of predetection dual diversity in Correlated Rayleigh fading: EGC and SD
Globecom '00 - IEEE. Global Telecommunications Conference. Conference Record (Cat. No.00CH37137), 1Co-Authors: Ranjan K. Mallik, Moe Z. Win, Jack Harriman WintersAbstract:Using a series approach, expressions for the average symbol error probability (SEP) of coherent binary signals over a Correlated Rayleigh fading channel with dual predetection equal gain combining (EGC) and selection diversity (SD) are derived. For both EGC and SD cases, the SEP is in terms of the correlation coefficient of the branch amplitudes, which is easy to compute and depicts clearly the effect of Correlated fading on the error performance.

ICC - BER of BFSK with Postdetection Switched Combining in Correlated Rayleigh Fading
2006 IEEE International Conference on Communications, 2006Co-Authors: Sasan Haghani, Norman C. BeaulieuAbstract:The performance of binary frequency-shift keying (BFSK) with dual-branch postdetection switch and stay combining (SSC) in Correlated Rayleigh fading is considered. A closedform expression for the average bit error rate (BER) of BFSK with dual-branch postdetection SSC is derived. Optimum switching thresholds that minimize the average BER are obtained. It is shown that, for a fixed value of average signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), the optimum switching threshold is a decreasing function of branch correlation. Our analytical results are validated using Monte Carlo simulation results. The performance of dual-branch postdetection SSC is compared to the performance of dual-branch predetection SSC in Correlated Rayleigh fading and it is shown that postdetection SSC has superior performance over predetection SSC for all values of SNR.

New method of performance analysis for diversity reception with Correlated Rayleigh-fading signals
IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, 2000Co-Authors: Liquan Fang, A.c. KotAbstract:This paper proposes a novel method for performance analysis of diversity reception with two Correlated Rayleigh-fading signals. Based upon a transformation technique, two Correlated Rayleigh-fading signals can be converted into two independent Rayleigh-fading signals. The performance of the diversity reception can be easily evaluated by analyzing the two independent Rayleigh-fading signals. The presented examples, performance analysis of maximal ratio combining (MRC), selection combining (SC), and equal gain combining (EGC) diversity reception with Correlated Rayleigh-fading signals, show that the proposed approach is simple and effective.

ICC - Performance of antenna diversity reception with Correlated Rayleigh fading signals
1999 IEEE International Conference on Communications (Cat. No. 99CH36311), 1Co-Authors: Liquan Fang, A.c. KotAbstract:This paper studies the performance of antenna diversity reception with selection combining (SC) and maximal ratio combining (MRC) in a Correlated Rayleigh fading environment. Simple PDF expressions are derived for the output SNR of the SC and MRC diversity receivers. Based on the PDF, the average BERs for DPSK and NCFSK modulation are calculated to show the effects of the correlation. Moreover, the relationship between the average BER and the diversity antennas' separation is given. The presented numerical results show that SC and MRC diversity reception can achieve a good performance only if the distance between two diversity antennas is larger than 0.3/spl lambda/.
