  • transaction Cost Theory past progress current challenges and suggestions for the future
The Academy of Management Annals, 2020
Co-Authors: Ilya Cuypers, Jean-françois Hennart, Brian S Silverman, Gokhan Ertug
    Abstract:

Transaction Cost Theory (TCT) has been fruitfully applied to a wide range of organizational phenomena, as reflected in a vast and evolving body of research. However, in part due to the Theory’s bro...

  • Transaction Cost Theory and International Business
    Journal of Retailing, 2010
    Co-Authors: Jean-françois Hennart
    Abstract:

I discuss the cross-fertilization between transaction Cost Theory (TCT) and international business (IB), showing how TCT provides a powerful lens to study the institutions that organize international interdependencies, and especially multinational enterprises (MNEs). I then discuss some of the insights that IB can provide for the further development of TCT. I argue that a full explanation of why MNEs exist must rely on information asymmetry as well as asset specificity, and that the study of modes of foreign market entry leads to alternative viewpoints on equity joint ventures and hybrids. I conclude by stressing the need for a simultaneous consideration of market transaction Costs and internal organization Costs when examining governance choices.

  • determinants of is sourcing decisions a comparative study of transaction Cost Theory versus the resource based view
Journal of Strategic Information Systems, 2005
    Co-Authors: Boonlert Watjatrakul
    Abstract:

Abstract Many organizations have employed the concepts of ‘asset specificity’ and ‘uncertainty’ from transaction Cost Theory (TCT), and ‘strategic resources’ from the resource-based view (RBV) as drivers of their information systems (ISs) sourcing decisions. They, however, face a dilemma when TCT and the RBV suggest different sourcing alternatives. The study identifies contexts where sourcing decisions made based on these two theories differ, and examines which Theory accounts better for an organization's sourcing decisions. Results show that a high-specificity asset is a major driver of sourcing decisions. It overpowers the effects of uncertainty on sourcing decisions; while a non-strategic resource has no impact on sourcing decisions. In particular, where the two theories make conflicting predictions, organizations should not always outsource non-strategic resources. Non-strategic resources that involve high specificity should be retained internally. The paper concludes with implications for academics and practitioners, and a discussion of future research directions.

  • power transformation equipment management based on life cycle Cost Theory
    Power system technology, 2008
    Co-Authors: Huang Xiaobei
    Abstract:

Based on the life cycle Cost Theory, the correlative charges during the operation of power transformation equipments are disassembled and a life cycle Cost model of power transformation equipments is built.By means of linear regression, 20 sets of Cost factor data impacting the secure operation of power transformation equipments are analyzed.Analysis results show that the factors such as being operated years of equipment, the processing frequency of common defects, the acquisition Cost and the frequency of condition-based maintenance mainly impact power transformation equipments;the first two factors present positive correlation with failure time and the latter two factors present negative correlation with failure time.On this basis, taking the security control objective as constraint, following suggestions on Cost management of power transformation equipments are proposed, they are:the purchase plan of power transformation equipment should be decided in accordance with the dependency degree of power consumers on power supply security;the economic service life of transformation equipments should be determined according to their secure operation and composite Costs;the condition-based maintenance should take the place of the periodical planned maintenance.
