  • Assessing the quality of distance education programs: The faculty’s perspective
Journal of Computing in Higher Education, 2002
    Co-Authors: John F. Bennett, Linda B. Bennett
    Abstract:

IN THE SPRING OF 2000, the National Education Association and Blackboard Inc. commissioned The Institute of Higher Education Policy, to identify the benchmarks considered essential to ensuring excellence in Internet-based distance learning. The Institute’s study revealed that there were 24 benchmarks considered essential to ensuring excellence in Internet-based distance learning. The purpose of this study is to ascertain the extent to which the benchmarks in the Course Development, Teaching/Learning Process, Course Structure and Faculty Support categories of the Institute’s study are being incorporated in the policies, procedures, and practices of a random sample of institutions of higher education offering Internet-based distance education Courses.

  • flipping signals and systems Course Structure results
International Conference on Acoustics Speech and Signal Processing, 2014
    Co-Authors: Mark L Fowler
    Abstract:

The flipped classroom approach is being used in many engineering Courses. This paper describes an approach used for flipping a large Signals & Systems class. The Structure of the out-of-class and inclass materials is described with comments about what issues are felt to be important. Student survey results are presented that help determine how students respond to the flipped approach as well as what factors they feel are important. Grade analysis results show significant gains on problem-based exams but no gain on conceptual-based exams.

  • it s just that visceral eliciting design insight using beaded representations of online Course Structure
Human Factors in Computing Systems, 2018
Co-Authors: Rebecca M Quintana, Yuanru Tan, Kathryn Gabriele, Noni Korf
    Abstract:

We explore an unconventional format for representing the Structure of online Courses-beaded representations. We used this format as a mediational tool to engage a design team in reflective discussion about the design of its Courses. We discuss challenges associated with the design of "massive open online Courses" (MOOCs) and position beaded representations within the context of human-computer interaction (HCI) literature on materiality, novel representational forms, and the use of boundary objects to support design teams. We describe the outcomes of a focus group session with design team members mediated by the beaded representations, which include: (1) discovery of curricular connections, (2) understanding of learner experience, (3) insights about the design process, and (4) reflection on the method.
