    Financial risk measurement relies on Models of prices and other market variables, but Models inevitably rely on imperfect assumptions and estimates, Creating Model risk. Moreover, optimization decisions, such as portfolio selection, amplify the effect of Model error. In this work, we develop a framework for quantifying the impact of Model error and for measuring and minimizing risk in a way that is robust to Model error. This robust approach starts from a baseline Model and finds the worst-case error in risk measurement that would be incurred through a deviation from the baseline Model, given a precise constraint on the plausibility of the deviation. Using relative entropy to constrain Model distance leads to an explicit characterization of worst-case Model errors; this characterization lends itself to Monte Carlo simulation, allowing straightforward calculation of bounds on Model error with very little computational effort beyond that required to evaluate performance under the baseline nominal Model.   • Branching competitive learning Network:A novel self-Creating Model

    Abstract:

    This paper presents a new self-Creating Model of a neural network in which a branching mechanism is incorporated with competitive learning. Unlike other self-Creating Models, the proposed scheme, called branching competitive learning (BCL), adopts a special node-splitting criterion, which is based mainly on the geometrical measurements of the movement of the synaptic vectors in the weight space. Compared with other self-Creating and nonself-Creating competitive learning Models, the BCL network is more efficient to capture the spatial distribution of the input data and, therefore, tends to give better clustering or quantization results. We demonstrate the ability of the BCL Model to appropriately estimate the cluster number in a data distribution, show its adaptability to nonstationary data inputs and, moreover, present a scheme leading to a multiresolution data clustering. Extensive experiments on vector quantization of image compression are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the BCL algorithm.

  • Creating Model Citizens for the Information Age: Canadian Internet as Civilizing Discourse Policy

    Abstract: In the late 1990s, the Government of Canada launched a string of initiatives to usher its citizens into the “information age.” Recently, the federal government has announced “mission accomplished” in its pledge to become a “Model user” of information technology, recognized around the world as the country most connected to its citizens. This paper interrogates the term “Model user” as a marker of the changes occurring to techniques of government in our expanding information society. It proposes that the “Model user” represents ways to negotiate the changing relationship between nation, state, and citizen associated with economic restructuring and signals a new civilizing discourse for citizen conduct amid the dynamic flows of information and ideas. Further, the “Model user” suggests an emphasis on innovation that is implicated within larger discourses of economic globalization and the premium placed on adaptability and creativity. Finally, this paper makes vivid the connections between the “Model user” and emerging discourses of Canada as a “Model democracy” and Canadians as “Model citizens” within the global context. Resume : A la fin des annees 90, le gouvernement du Canada a cree une serie d’initiatives afin de lancer ses citoyens dans « l’ ere de l’information ». Tout recemment, le gouvernement federal a proclame « mission accomplie” en ce qui concerne son objectif de devenir un « utilisateur Modele » des technologies de l’information, reconnu a travers le monde comme etant le pays le plus connecte a ses citoyens. Cet article interroge le terme d’ « utilisateur Modele » en tant que marqueur des changements qui affectent les techniques de gouvernance dans notre societe de l’information toujours grandissante. Il propose que « l’utilisateur Modele », d’une part, illustre les facons de negocier la relation changeante entre nation, Etat et citoyen qui est associee aux restructurations economiques et, d’autre part, signale un nouveau discours civilisateur pour la conduite du citoyen plonge dans les courants dynamiques d’informations et d’idees. De plus, l’ « utilisateur Modele » met l’accent sur l’innovation et s’insere dans un discours plus large sur la globalisation economique et sur la valeur accordee a l’adaptabilite et la creativite. Finalement, cet article met en lumiere les liens qui existent entre l’ « utilisateur Modele » et les discours emergents qui presentent le Canada comme une “democratie Modele » et les Canadiens comme « citoyens Modeles » au sein d’un contexte global.

  • Creating Model consumers: Producing ethnicity, race, and class in Asian American advertising

    How does Asian American advertising contribute to the construction of race and ethnicity in the contemporary United States? In this article, I consider how executives write advertising copy and create original artwork for Asian American advertisements in ways that index brand identities. I introduce the analytic of “metaproduction,” a process of material and linguistic signification that uses metacultural and metalinguistic values to connect microlevel signification of language and culture with broader social meanings and values. Analysis of ethnographic data from New York City advertising agencies shows how racialization occurs through the transformation of Asian Americans from Model minority producers into Model minority consumers.

    In this paper, a new approach for automatic Creating boundary-representation of planar objects from single line drawings depicting the objects was proposed. Compared with other reconstruction methods that use information a bout points, for computer visiona nd CAD system, it was more convenient to use information about lines to interpret line drawings of polyhedral objects. The coordinates relations between a three-dimensional line and its perspective projection in two-dimension plane are given. Another three coordinates relations are also provided, namely, the coordinates relations when two lines are intersecting, parallel, cross, perpendicular, relations when a line is parallel with or belongs to a plane, and relations when two planes parallel each other. On the basis of these coordinates relations, some new constraints about lines and planes are proposed and a linear system is established. The 3D information of planar objects can be obtained by solving the linear system. In the interpretation of line drawing of a planar object, it is proved that there are at least four degrees of freedom. Some examples are given.
