These are based on close knowledge of the functioning of agroecosystems. They are aimed at managing biological pests and their natural enemies, first through action on their habitats both in Crop fields and in the non-cultivated part of the farm. A balance of the biological control possibilities available is drawn up and attention paid to the application of recent knowledge in conservation biology. The bases of pest control with a ranking of the various intervention techniques are then set out. Implementation means the development of Cropping systems and therefore increased participation by agronomists and also a break with certain agronomic practices commonly used by farmers today.

On the basis of our previous results, here the transcriptional response of vestigial wing in Mythimna separata Walker (a Crop-threatening insect pest) to a podophyllotoxin-derived insecticidal agent was analyzed by using RNA-Seq. This is the first study to explore the vestigial wing behavior of insect pests caused by xenobiotics. targeted drug delivery for sustainable Crop Protection transport and stability of polymeric nanocarriers in plants

A sustainable alternative is target-specific, on-demand drug delivery by polymeric nanocarriers. Trunk injections of aqueous nanocarrier dispersions can overcome the biological size barriers of roots and leaves and allow distributing the nanocarriers through the plant. To date, the fate of polymeric nanocarriers inside a plant is widely unknown. Here, the in planta conditions in grapevine plants are simulated and the colloidal stability of a systematic series of nanocarriers composed of polystyrene (well-defined model) and biodegradable lignin and polylactic-co-glycolic acid by a combination of different techniques is studied. Despite the adsorption of carbohydrates and other biomolecules onto the nanocarriers' surface, they remain colloidally stable after incubation in biological fluids (wood sap), suggesting a potential transport via the xylem. The transport is tracked by fluorine- and ruthenium-labeled nanocarriers inside of grapevines by 19 F-magnetic resonance imaging or induced coupled plasma - optical emission spectroscopy. Both methods show that the nanocarriers are transported inside of the plant and proved to be powerful tools to localize nanomaterials in plants. This study provides essential information to design nanocarriers for agrochemical delivery in plants to sustainable Crop Protection.

European Journal of Agronomy, 2013Co-Authors: Mike W Palmer, Mick Eyre, Julia Cooper, Catherine Tetardjones, Dominika średnickatober, M Baranski, P N Shotton, Nikolaos Volakakis, Ismail Cakmak, Levent OzturkAbstract:The effects of organic versus conventional Crop management practices (fertilisation, Crop Protection) and preceding Crop on potato tuber yield (total, marketable, tuber size grade distribution) and quality (proportion of diseased, green and damaged tubers, tuber macro-nutrient concentrations) parameters were investigated over six years (2004–2009) as part of a long-term factorial field trial in North East England. Inter-year variability (the effects of weather and preceding Crop) was observed to have a profound effect on yields and quality parameters, and this variability was greater in organic fertility systems. Total and marketable yields were significantly reduced by the use of both organic Crop Protection and fertility management. However, the yield gap between organic and conventional fertilisation regimes was greater and more variable than that between Crop Protection practices. This appears to be attributable mainly to lower and less predictable nitrogen supply in organically fertilised Crops. Increased incidence of late blight in organic Crop Protection systems only occurred when conventional fertilisation was applied. In organically fertilised Crops yield was significantly higher following grass/red clover leys than winter wheat, but there was no pre-Crop effect in conventionally fertilised Crops. The results highlight that nitrogen supply from organic fertilisers rather than inefficient pest and disease control may be the major limiting factor for yields in organic potato production systems.

Crop sequence Crop Protection and fertility management effects on weed cover in an organic conventional farm management trial
European Journal of Agronomy, 2011Co-Authors: Mick Eyre, C N R Critchley, Carlo Leifert, S WilcocksonAbstract:A survey of 128 plots, in 2008, of a trial where the effects of Crop Protection can be separated from those of fertility management, generated weed cover data within six Crops (winter wheat, winter barley, spring barley, potatoes, cabbages and a grass/clover ley). The effects of the 2008 Crop types, of the two preceding Crops and of organic and conventional Crop Protection and fertility management, were assessed using mixed-effects models and constrained ordination. Cover data for 22 weed species and for monocotyledon, dicotyledon, annual, perennial and total weed cover were used. Cover of 15 weed species, and of the five weed groups, was significantly affected by 2008 Crops, with cover highest in spring beans and cabbage. Nine and four weed species 2008 cover were significantly related to Crops grown in 2007 and 2006 respectively, as were dicotyledon, annual and total weed cover, but not monocotyledon or perennial cover. Cover of 15 species, and the five groups, was significantly higher in plots with organic Crop Protection, but only eight species and annuals were significantly affected by fertility management. Crop:Crop Protection produced the most significant interactions with most cover in organically managed plots. Five species, perennials and total weed cover produced significant three-factor models. The greatest weed cover was in organic Crop protected but conventionally fertilised spring barley and the least in totally conventional winter barley. Other factors such as Crop density and mechanical weeding also affected 2008 weed cover. The ordination indicated that most of the 22 species were strongly associated with Crops from all three years. The sequence of Crops in the rotation had a profound effect on weed cover. Where three spring-sown, difficult to weed, Crops were grown in sequence (spring beans, potatoes and vegetables, spring barley) weed cover increased. However, cover was limited in grass/clover and some cereal plots with different preceding Crops. Models predicting weed cover may need to take into account Crop sequences within Crop rotations, as well as the more usual management inputs.
