  • Crystal orientation dependence of piezoelectric properties of lead zirconate titanate near the morphotropic phase boundary
    Applied Physics Letters, 1998
Co-Authors: Xiaohong Du, Jiehui Zheng, Uma Belegundu, Kenji Uchino
    Abstract:

The piezoelectric and dielectric constants in different Crystal orientations of the lead zirconate titanate (PZT) have been phenomenologically calculated for the compositions near the morphotropic phase boundary at room temperature. For a tetragonal PZT, the effective piezoelectric constant d33 monotonously decreases as the Crystal Cutting angle from the spontaneous polarization direction [001] increases. However, for a rhombohedral PZT, the effective piezoelectric constant d33[001]// along the perovskite [001] direction was found to be much larger than those along the spontaneous polarization direction [111]. This Crystal orientation-related enhancement is emphasized as the composition approaches the morphotropic phase boundary. This suggests that by adopting the perovskite [001] orientation with a rhombohedral composition near the morphotropic phase boundary, the piezoelectric constant d33 for PZT can be greatly enhanced.

  • exploiting differential electrochemical stripping behaviors of fe3o4 nanoCrystals toward heavy metal ions by Crystal Cutting
ACS Applied Materials & Interfaces, 2014
Co-Authors: Xianzhi Yao, Zheng Guo, Qinghong Yuan, Zhonggang Liu, Jinhuai Liu, Xingjiu Huang
    Abstract:

This study attempts to understand the intrinsic impact of different morphologies of nanoCrystals on their electrochemical stripping behaviors toward heavy metal ions. Two differently shaped Fe3O4 nanoCrystals, i.e., (100)-bound cubic and (111)-bound octahedral, have been synthesized for the experiments. Electrochemical results indicate that Fe3O4 nanoCrystals with different shapes show different stripping behaviors toward heavy metal ions. Octahedral Fe3O4 nanoCrystals show better electrochemical sensing performances toward the investigated heavy metal ions such as Zn(II), Cd(II), Pb(II), Cu(II), and Hg(II), in comparison with cubic ones. Specifically, Pb(II) is found to have the best stripping performance on both the (100) and (111) facets. To clarify these phenomena, adsorption abilities of as-prepared Fe3O4 nanoCrystals have been investigated toward heavy metal ions. Most importantly, combined with theoretical calculations, their different electrochemical stripping behaviors in view of facet effects ha...

  • enhanced photocatalytic oxygen evolution by Crystal Cutting
    Advanced Materials, 2013
Co-Authors: Min Sun, Shijie Xiong, Paul K Chu
    Abstract:

Uniformly cut In2O3 truncated octahedrons are fabricated on a large scale by a simple chemical vapor deposition (CVD) technique. This theoretical analysis predicts that the emergence of {100} facets on the In2O3 truncated octahedrons enhances oxygen evolution significantly in photocatalysis and experimental photoelectrochemical measurements are consistent.
