Making “sustainable consumption” matter: the indoor microclimate as contested Cultural Artifact
'SAGE Publications', 2020Co-Authors: Sahakian Marlyne, Henrike Rau, Grégoire WallenbornAbstract:This article demonstrates how a Cultural reading of consumption that focuses on the meaning and materiality of domestic indoor microclimates can contribute to conceptual developments in the field of practice theory that refocus attention on Cultural patterns, including prevailing norms and prescriptions regarding indoor temperature and thermal comfort. Drawing on evidence collected during a research-led change initiative that encouraged people to reduce energy use in the home by lowering indoor temperature to 18°C, we deploy the heuristic device of “indoor microclimate as Artifact” to show how the manifestation of this new Artifact initiated significant changes in everyday practices that revolve around heating. We observe that these changes may also spill over into the public sphere – from home to workplace. By making the microclimate a tangible and visible thing, we describe how people appropriate and appreciate this new object of consumption, what it says about different bodies in diverse and bounded spaces, and what the Artifact as a commodity reveals about broader systems of heating and energy provision, and associated actors. Due to the increasing spread of central heating and the growing importance of complex technological devices to monitor and control indoor temperature, heating is no longer a practice in and of itself for many urban dwellers in Europe. However, when people appropriate the indoor microclimate, new heating-related practices emerge that can lead to energy sufficiency. We thus argue that by deliberately “materializing” domestic indoor microclimate as part of a change initiative, more sustainable forms of energy use can be made to matter

In the field of digital archive, it is important to archive and exhibit the Cultural Artifact at the high-definition. To archive the shape, color and texture of the Cultural Artifact, it is important to archive and represent not only visual effect but haptic impression. Therefore, multimodal digital archiving, realtime multisensory rendering, and intuitive and immersive exhibition system are necessary. Therefore, we develop a realtime and direct-touch interaction system for the 3D Cultural Artifact exhibition based on a texture-based haptic rendering technique. In our system, the viewer can directly touch a stereoscopic vision of 3D digital archived Cultural Artifact with the string-based and scalable haptic interface device "SPIDAR" and vibration motor.

International Journal of Information Management, 2007Co-Authors: Gordon Fletcher, Ben LightAbstract:In this study, we develop a theorisation of an internet dating site as a Cultural Artifact. The site, Gaydar, is targeted at gay men. We argue that contemporary received representations of their sexuality figure heavily in the site's focus by providing a Cultural logic for the apparent ad hoc development trajectories of its varied commercial and non-commercial services. More specifically, we suggest that the growing sets of services related to the website are heavily enmeshed within current social practices and meanings. These practices and meanings are, in turn, shaped by the interactions and preferences of a variety of diverse groups involved in what is routinely seen within the mainstream literature as a singularly specific sexuality and Cultural project. Thus, we attend to two areas-the influence of the various social engagements associated with Gaydar together with the further extension of its trajectory 'beyond the web'. Through the case of Gaydar, we contribute a study that recognises the need for attention to sexuality in information systems research and one which illustrates sexuality as a pivotal aspect of culture. We also draw from anthropology to theorise ICTs as Cultural Artifacts and provide insights into the contemporary phenomena of ICT enabled social networking.

Journal of Cognition and Culture, 2005Co-Authors: Samar ZebianAbstract:The current investigations coordinate math cognition and Cultural approaches to numeric thinking to examine the linkages between numeric and spatial processes, and how these linkages are modified by the Cultural Artifact of writing. Previous research in the adult numeric cognition literature has shown that English monoliterates have a spatialised mental number line which is oriented from left-to-right with smaller magnitudes associated with the left side of space and larger magnitudes are associated with the right side of space. These associations between number and space have been termed the Spatial Numeric Association Response Code Effect (SNARC effect, Dehaene, 1992). The current study investigates the spatial orientation of the mental number line in the following groups: English monoliterates, Arabic monoliterates who use only the right-left writing system, Arabic-English biliterates, and illiterate Arabic speakers who only read numerals. Current results indicate, for the first time, a Reverse SNARC effect for Arabic monoliterates, such that the mental number line had a right-to-left directionality. Furthermore, a weakened Reverse SNARC was observed for Arabic-English biliterates, and no effect was observed among Illiterate Arabic speakers. These findings are especially notable since left-right biases are neurologically supported and are observed in pre-literate children regardless of which writing system is used by adults. The broader implications of how Cultural Artifacts affect basic numeric cognition will be discussed.
