In so doing, I extensively draw on writing from the Anglo-American context which somewhat complicates the matter. Barnett (1998) implied that the "Cultural turn" is not a "coherent and singular process" (379) which will emerge from my reflections as well. But even though the disciplines have undergone di erent ways of becoming, Dutch geographies are, formally, valued and assessed by procedures that have developed alongside, if not as a part of, the Cultural turn(s) in the United Kingdom. In the Netherlands, di erent Departments have been a part of (or apart from) the Cultural turn in di erent ways. In this article, I draw on some of the similarities and di erences but will focus to a large extent on my own institutional context at the University of Groningen. 1 Prelude

Terra à vista : a obra do viajante-artista John Henry Elliott e a formação da Província do Paraná no Segundo Reinado

J. H. Elliott, originariamente marinheiro, foi pintor aquarelista, escritor e geógrafo. E em suas viagens explorou os sertões brasileiros - e especialmente os sertões do Paraná - quando das Entradas e Bandeiras realizadas a serviço do tropeiro, fazendeiro, empresário e político João da Silva Machado, o Barão de Antonina. O objetivo principal do trabalho é estudar os mapas corográficos (precursores na representação cartográfica da Província do Paraná, constituída oficialmente a partir de 1853), os relatos de viagens e as aquarelas produzidas a partir das explorações geográficas realizadas pelo território paranaense, considerando que estes compõem um Corpus Discursivo do viajante-artista sobre a paisagem pretérita do território e são, portanto, registros iconográficos permeados por narrativas, discursos geográficos e representações simbólicas das paisagens culturais no período. Primeiro foi necessária uma apresentação sobre a vida e o conjunto da obra do viajante-artista na transição para segunda metade do século XIX, bem como uma contextualização sobre o Paraná e o Segundo Reinado. Em seguida, no delineamento do trabalho, analisam-se essas iconografias no contexto dessas explorações geográficas e da formação sociogeográfica do Paraná com os aportes conceituais e metodológicos dos estudos da paisagem, especialmente desenvolvidos nas obras do geógrafo Cultural Denis Cosgrove e do historiador de arte Erwin Panofsky. Nas quais o diálogo com as teorias do conhecimento da filosofia das formas simbólicas e da filosofia da paisagem em Ernst Cassirer e Georg Simmel delineiam um campo profícuo de estudos interdisciplinares sobre paisagem e suas representações na Geografia - como consequência, e em vista desta hermenêutica percorrida, os registros iconográficos e suas narrativas se projetam de sua materialidade meramente documental e histórica (assim como a paisagem ela mesma) para as dimensões simbólicas, por serem perpassados nesta exegese pelo campo da Vivência Cultural dos personagens e das sociedades que os produzem. Geografia do Paraná.Abstract: This thesis approaches, from the perspective of Landscape Iconography, the iconographic sources of the American traveler-artist John Henry Elliott (1809-1888) in the context of the formation of the Province of Paraná in the Second Reign (1840-1889). J. H. Elliott, originally a sailor, was also a watercolorist, writer and Geographer. In his travels, he explored the Brazilian frontiers - especially the sertões of Paraná - during the Entradas e Bandeiras expedition carried out on behalf of the cattleman, businessman and politician João da Silva Machado, the Baron of Antonina. The main objective of this work is to study the chorographic maps (precursors to the cartographic representation of the Paraná Province, officially established after 1853), the travel journals and watercolors produced during the geographic explorations conducted throughout the territory of Paraná. These comprise a Discursive Corpus of the traveler-artist on the historical landscape of the territory and are, therefore, iconographic registers permeated by narratives, geographic discourses and symbolic representations of the Cultural landscapes of the period. This work begins with a presentation on the life and the body of work of the traveler-artist in the transition to the second half of the nineteenth century, and puts Paraná and the Second Reign within this context. The iconographic sources are then analyzed in the context of the geographical explorations and socio-geographic formation of Paraná. This is done by means of the conceptual and methodological contributions of landscape studies, especially those developed in the works of the Cultural Geographer Denis Cosgrove and the art historian Erwin Panofsky. Further, the dialogue between the theories of the philosophy of symbolic forms and the philosophy of landscape of Ernst Cassirer and Georg Simmel delineate a field of interdisciplinary study on landscape and its representations in Geography. As a consequence of, and in view of this hermeneutic, the iconographic archives and their narratives are projected from their merely documentary and historical materiality (like the landscape itself) to symbolic dimensions, as touched upon in this exegesis through the field of the Cultural Experience of the characters and the societies that produce them. Elliott, originariamente marinero, fue pintor acuarelista, escritor y geógrafo y en sus viajes exploró los sertões brasileños - especialmente los sertões del Paraná - cuando de las Entradas y Banderas realizadas al servicio del tropero, granjero, empresario y político João da Silva Machado, el Barón de Antonina. El objetivo principal del trabajo es estudiar los mapas corográficos (precursores en la representación cartográfica de la Provincia del Paraná, constituida oficialmente desde 1853), los relatos de viajes y las acuarelas producidas a partir de las explotaciones geográficas realizadas por el territorio paranaense, considerando que estos componen un Conjunto Discursivo del viajero-artista sobre el paisaje pretérito del territorio y son, por lo tanto, registros iconográficos impregnados de narraciones, discursos geográficos y representaciones simbólicas de los paisajes Culturales en el período. Denis Cosgrove e o desenvolvimento da perspectiva simbólica e iconográfica da paisagem
2017Co-Authors: José Luiz De ,carvalhoAbstract:This paper analyzes the epistemological approaches verified between the work of the english Cultural Geographer Denis Cosgrove and the Warburg Institute; from the library founded by the art historian Aby Warburg in the first decades of the 20th century in Germany, Hamburg, with references mainly addressed to the study of memory and formation of representational images in human culture. It investigates how based in these initial references, as well as from the philosophy of symbolic forms developed in the work of the german philosopher of culture Ernst Cassirer, the art historian Erwin Panofsky could conceptually rethink and reinterpret the knowledge of the iconography and iconology; and therefore as from the context of this particular theory of knowledge the english Cultural Geographer Denis Cosgrove performed, through his own referencial works, an epistemological renewal in the science of Geography, specifically by his studies focusing on the category of landscape, categorically reformed in his work also in the iconographic, iconological and symbolic dimensions.O presente artigo analisa as aproximações epistemológicas verificadas entre a obra do geógrafo Cultural inglês Denis Cosgrove e o Instituto Warburg. A partir da biblioteca fundada pelo historiador de arte Aby Warburg nas primeiras décadas do século XX na Alemanha, em Hamburgo; com referenciais voltados, sobretudo, ao estudo da memória e formação das imagens representacionais na cultura humana. Investiga como com base nessas referências iniciais, bem como da filosofia das formas simbólicas desenvolvida na obra do filósofo da cultura alemão Ernst Cassirer, o historiador de arte Erwin Panofsky pode repensar e reinterpretar conceitualmente o conhecimento da iconografia e iconologia. E, por conseguinte, como a partir do contexto desta específica teoria do conhecimento o geógrafo Cultural inglês Denis Cosgrove realizou, através das suas obras de referência, uma renovação epistemológica na ciência da geografia, mais especificamente pelos seus estudos voltados à categoria de paisagem, reformulada categorialmente em sua obra também nas dimensões iconográficas, iconológicas e simbólicas

What difference does dance make? Critical conversations across dance, physical activity and public health
'Informa UK Limited', 2016Co-Authors: Watson R, Bd Lashua, Trevorrow PAbstract:Critical conversations concerning if and how dance ‘fits’ within current (dominant) discourse across physical activity (PA), public health (PH) and sport policy are presented here in the form of commentaries from a ‘collective’ research base and individual ‘worldviews’ that includes the director of an established community-based dance organisation, a local authority PH commissioner and three academic researchers (a sociologist, Cultural Geographer and technologist). Dynamic dialogue between all parties has been encouraged throughout the research process (January–December 2015). From our viewpoints, discursive differences and occasional disciplinary dilemmas are regarded as potentially knowledge producing. We share transcribed parts of our critical conversations to illustrate how evaluating dance as PA represents opportunities for challenging if not disrupting some discursive terrain, whilst concurrently being somewhat constrained by that terrain. Our broader research remit contributes to ongoing debates surrounding ‘what works’ in relation to PA. Our dynamic interactions are thus constitutive of and productive within wider circuits or discourses of policy and provision. Paradigmatic rivalry or epistemological ‘tensions’ may well be hindering attempts to demonstrate that dance does have positive impacts on health. Acknowledgement and engagement with these tensions can arguably inform policy and practice in effective and meaningful ways and contribute further to debates regarding an evidence base seeking to ‘prove’ the benefits of activity-based programmes and interventions as we look across PA, PH and sport

Performance Studies x Cultural Studies Colloquium : Cultures in Motion, Performance in Transit

How do scholars based in the Asia-Pacific adapt and improvise to make sense of performance studies’ inherently transnational and emancipatory premises, yet decenter its Euro-American pedigree as an institutionalized discipline? This colloquium invites three scholars from the Pacific-Asian region to lead a colloquium on teaching and researching in the emerging discipline of performance studies. There has been a series of sustained interests in, critique on, and reconsideration of applying performance studies methods and methodologies to the Asian context and Asian performance traditions. Yet the actual teaching and researching, i.e. institutional practices in the academe, merit further discussions that respond to the priorities unique to Asian universities in the neoliberal climate. In light of Department of Cultural Studies’ continued efforts to introduce the field of performance studies at Lingnan, the colloquium will also address specific questions, opportunities, and challenges emerging from performance studies research and teaching in the Hong Kong’s Cultural context. “Performance Studies x Cultural Studies” Colloquium speaks to a broader community of scholars, performance practitioners, and general public in Hong Kong interested in performance as an object of analysis and method of inquiry. The first session is led by the three invitees in a panel discussion format based on their respective research interests and institutional background. The second half is led by the Cultural Studies department’s own faculty members as discussants addressing the most salient issues emerging from the first session as well as their own methodological concerns from performance-related research and teaching within Cultural studies. Chan Q&A and Extended Discussion Speakers Stephen Chan Ching Kiu is a professor of Cultural studies at Lingnan University, and was the founding director of its BA Cultural Studies programme in 1999. Between 2003 and 2008, he was the inaugural Director of the Master of Cultural Studies (MCS), a self-financed programme taught primarily to Cultural practitioners in education, media, and NGO services. In 2008 he received the Dr. and Mrs. James Tak Wu Award for Outstanding Service. Together with Li Siu-leung, Chan introduced the new performance studies minor to the BA in Cultural Studies programme and the performance studies concentration in the MCS. He writes extensively on Hong Kong culture, film, identity narratives and performance, and also serves as Chair of the Association for Cultural Studies. Anjeline De Dios is an assistant professor of Cultural studies at Lingnan University. As a Cultural Geographer, she researches the intersections of migration, mobilities, creative/Cultural labour, ethnography, and music. Prior to joining the Department of Cultural Studies, she was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Asia Research Institute, National University of Singapore. She is co-editor (with Lily Kong) of The Elgar Handbook Geographies of Creativity (Edward Elgar, forthcoming 2019), and is working on a booklength manuscript based on her ethnographic dissertation on the labour geographies of overseas Filipino musicians. Parallel to her academic work, Anjeline is also a chant performer who writes and collaborates with artists and facilitators in contexts of improvisational performance (jazz, dance, sound art), and community meditation. Hyunjung Lee is currently a Professor of Asian Studies in the College of Foreign Studies at Kansai Gaidai University, Osaka, Japan. She had previously taught in the Division of English at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore from 2009 to 2017. Lee’s research interests include performance studies, literature, and Cultural studies. Her publications have appeared in Korea Journal, Theatre Research International, and in the Journal of Popular Culture, among other journals. She has contributed book chapters in various edited collections published by Routledge, Palgrave Macmillan, and Roman & Littlefield. Lee has also co-edited a journal special issue entitled Colonial Modernity and Beyond: the East Asian Contexts in Cultural Studies (2012). She is the author of Performing the Nation in Global Korea: Transnational Theatre (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015). Tejaswini Niranjana is a professor and the Head of Cultural Studies at Lingnan University. She is the author of Siting Translation: History, Post-structuralism and the Colonial Context (Berkeley, 1992), Mobilizing India: Women, Music and Migration between India and Trinidad (Durham, 2006), and Musicophilia in Mumbai (forthcoming, 2019). Her most recent edited volumes are with Wang Xiaoming, Genealogies of the Asian Present: Situating Inter-Asia Cultural Studies (Delhi, 2015), and with Anup Dhar and K.Sridhar, Breaking the Silo: Integrated Science Education in India (Delhi, 2017). Prior to her appointment at Lingnan, she worked at the Centre for the Study of Culture and Society, Bangalore, and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. She has been Visiting Professor at the University of Chicago and Yonsei University, Seoul; and a Fellow at the Asia Research Institute (NUS-Singapore), the Institut de Etudes Avancees (Nantes, France), and the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin (Germany). She currently serves as the chair of the Inter-Asia Cultural Studies Society. Paul Rae is an Associate Professor in Theatre Studies and Head of English and Theatre Studies at the University of Melbourne. He was born and educated in the UK, and before coming to Australia in 2014, he lived for 17 years in Singapore where he made, taught and wrote about theatre. He is the author of Theatre & Human Rights (Palgrave Macmillan, 2009) and Real Theatre: Essays in Experience (Cambridge University Press, 2019). His research interests include contemporary theatre and Asia-Pacific performance cultures. He is currently writing a book titled Performing Islands. Chiayi Seetoo is an Assistant Professor at Shanghai Theatre Academy. Her interests include critical studies of dance, physical performance, Asian and Sinophone Cultural studies, practice-research in the arts, and interCultural communication. She also performs, directs, and organizes artistic projects and community events. Chiayi Seetoo serves on the board of Performance Studies international (PSi), and has published articles in P[art]icipatory Urbanisms, PAR: Performing Arts Review, TDR: The Drama Review, and LEAP among others. She is currently working on two book projects about contemporary dance of Taiwan and mainland China. Soo Ryon Yoon is an assistant professor of Cultural studies at Lingnan University, Hong Kong. She teaches and writes about contemporary performance, dance history, and racial politics in South Korea and in the broader East Asian context. She is currently working on her first monograph, Choreographing Affinities: Koreanness, Blackness, and Performing Race in South Korea, which explores choreographic articulations — both staged and quotidian — of raced bodies of Koreanness and blackness in the context of global Afro-Asian relations. Her other writings appear in Inter-Asia Cultural Studies, GPS: Global Performance Studies, ASAP/J, positions: Asia critique (in press), and Theatre Journal among others. She received PhD in performance studies from Northwestern University and taught at Yale University as a postdoctoral associate and visiting lecturer in the Council on East Asian Studies and the East Asian Languages and Literatures department

Jackson Collection, and making it available for scholars and researchers.Design/methodology/approach – The first part of the article describes the importance of Jackson's contribution to landscape architecture and his professional legacy. This legacy consisted in a large collection of slides, scattered among various individuals and institutions. The authors then address how the various parts of the collection were identified, acquired, digitized and brought to the University of New Mexico (UNM). Metadata creation and issues of copyright are also discussed.Findings – The paper finds that it requires considerable professional effort and networking to take a working collection and transform it into an archive that has intellectual cogency.Research limitations/implications – UNM's effort to acquire, preserve and make this collection widely available will inspire future s...
