  • Contemporary Georgian architectural theory and practice : The legacy of Shota Bostanashvili
    'Iniciativa Digital Politecnica', 2020
    Co-Authors: Bianco Lino
    Abstract:

Shota Bostanashvili (1948-2013), a practising architect and a pioneer in developing the poetics of architecture, was a Cultural Theorist. His philosophy centred around an architectural discourse specifically addressing architecture and linguistic play, and the semiotics of architecture. The objective of this paper is to identify the themes underpinning his philosophy of architecture and his legacy relative to his contemporaries. This paper is based on primary sources including Bostanashvili’s buildings, monuments and publications together with unpublished material from the Shota Bostanashvili Archive (Tbilisi). Reference is also made to video footage from the Georgian Public Broadcast, conferences and other sources. This paper concludes by identifying outstanding milestones in Bostanashvili’s legacy, both on a pragmatic and a theoretical level. The former relates to the poetics and metapoetics of architecture whilst the latter correlates to architecture as a unique individual spiritual experience and to the poetics of space as part of Cultural history rather than phenomenology. He opted for paper architecture as a mode of abstract and poetic expression to approach architecture design education. This paper delves into the margins of normative European architectural historiography. It is a first in documenting in detail the legacy of Shota Bostanashvili, an outstanding Georgian architect, academic, sculptor and poet who is barely known in Western countries, thereby highlighting his impact on the theory of architecture.peer-reviewe

  • Teoria i pràctica arquitectònica georgiana contemporània: el llegat de Shota Bostanashvili
    'Iniciativa Digital Politecnica', 2020
    Co-Authors: Bianco Lino
    Abstract:

• Construction of Identity in Diasporic Communities: Musical Artists Performance of Caribbeanness & Latinidad
    Union | Digital Works, 2020
    Co-Authors: Noa-guzman Dayrielis
    Abstract:

This thesis highlights and explores the performances of four diasporic Caribbean artists–Jennifer Lopez, Cardi B, Bad Bunny, and Rihanna. Their performances inhabit intersectional factors of race, gender, class, sexuality, creating a multifaceted experience of moving in the world. Their existence is marked by stereotypes that criminalize and sexualize them. United States representation of these communities is riddled with stereotypes that justify racial and gender injustice. These four artists both reinforce and undo these stereotypes in fascinating ways. Using Latinx Cultural Theorist Isabel Molina-Guzmán along with political Theorist Judith Butler\u27s theory on performativity as my theoretical guide, I conceptualize Latinidad and Caribbeanness, analyzing what performance can do in order to subvert stereotypes as they risk reinforcing them. These artists engage in gender and racial patriarchal scripts while simultaneously critiquing the norms that dictate the performances they present

  • The Memetic Evolution of Latin American Architectural Design Culture
    'MDPI AG', 2021
Co-Authors: İlknur Akıner, İbrahim Yitmen, Muhammed Ernur Akıner, Nurdan Akıner
    Abstract:

Architecture is an evolutionary field. Through time, it changes and adapts itself according to two things: the environment and the user, which are the touchstones of the concept of culture. Culture changes in long time intervals because of its cumulative structure, so its effects can be observed on a large scale. A nation displays itself with its culture and uses architecture as a tool to convey its Cultural identity. This dual relationship between architecture and culture can be observed at various times and in various lands, most notably in Latin American designers. The geographical positions of Latin American nations and their political situations in the twentieth century leads to the occurrence of a recognizable Cultural identity, and it influenced the architectural design language of that region. The nonlinear forms in architecture were once experienced commonly around Latin America, and this design expression shows itself in the designers’ other works through time and around the world. The Cultural background of Latin American architecture investigated within this study, in terms of their design approach based upon the form and effect of Latin American culture on this architectural design language, is examined with the explanation of the concept of culture by two leading scholars: Geert Hofstede and Richard Dawkins. This paper nevertheless puts together architecture and semiology by considering key twentieth century philosophers and Cultural Theorist methodologies. Cultural Theorist and analyst Roland Barthes was the first person to ask architects to examine the possibility of bringing semiology and architectural theory together. Following an overview of existing semiological conditions, this paper analyzed Roland Barthes and Umberto Eco’s hypothesis of the semiological language of architectural designs of Latin American designers by examining their Cultural origin. The work’s findings express the historical conditions that enabled the contemporary architecture and culture study of Latin America between 1945 and 1975 to address the “Latin American model” of architectural modernism

  • Affective disorder: architectural design for complex national identities
    'Informa UK Limited', 2020
    Co-Authors: Pandya Samir
    Abstract:

Underpinned by concepts drawn from postcolonial theory, this article speculates on the relationship between built form and the experience of difference. It critically examines Cultural Theorist Homi K. Bhabha's conceptualisation of nation – focusing on ideas of the ‘performative’ and ‘pedagogical’ – as applied to frame specific works of architecture in the writing of Felipe Hernández. This analysis is then used as the foundation for two building reviews. Firstly, the National Museum of Australia, which reveals an emphasis on formal incoherence to reflect the plurality of national identity. This in-turn leads to a consideration of ‘affect’ as an alternative design hermeneutic in the pursuit of non-reductive methods to reflect the lived plurality of ‘nation-space’. This consideration is extended to a second building study: the Institut du Monde Arabe, which is used to advance ideas on the relationship between form (representation) and affect (non-representation) and the relative merits these may bring to a re-thinking of design approaches in contexts of complex national identities
