  • the appearance of kant s deontology in contemporary kantianism concepts of patient autonomy in bioethics
Journal of Medicine and Philosophy, 1999
    Co-Authors: Barbara Secker
    Abstract:

Kant's concept of autonomy and the Kantian notion of autonomy are often conflated in bioethics. However, the contemporary Kantian notion has very little at all to do with Kant's original. In order to further bioethics discourse on autonomy, I critically distinguish the contemporary Kantian notion from Kant's original concept of moral autonomy. I then evaluate the practical relevance of both concepts of autonomy for use in bioethics. I argue that it is not appropriate to appeal to either concept toward assessing which patients we ought to respect as autonomous. Finally, I sketch criteria for what I take to be a more promising concept of autonomy for patients.

  • back to kant reinterpreting the democratic peace as a macrohistorical learning process
    American Political Science Review, 2001
    Co-Authors: Larserik Cederman
    Abstract:

The contemporary international relations literature links the democratic peace hypothesis to Kant’s famous peace plan. Yet, whether attempting to prove or disprove the hypothesis, most quantitative studies have lost sight of important dimensions of the Kantian vision. I reinterpret the democratic peace as a dynamic and dialectical learning process. In order to assess the dynamic dimension of this process (while controlling for exogenous dialectical reversals), I rely on quantitative evidence drawn from popular data sets. In conformance with the Kantian perspective, the conflict propensities among democracies exhibit a steadily falling trend since the nineteenth century. Yet, in partial opposition to Kant’s expectations, other dyads also experience a significant, although weaker, pacifying trend. A series of tests shows that these findings are robust to epochal effects, various control variables, and “maturity effects” measuring the age of democratic dyads.

  • A Kantian Critique of Kant's Theory of Punishment
    Law and Philosophy, 2000
    Co-Authors: Jean-christophe Merle
    Abstract:

In contrast to the traditional view of Kant as apure retributivist, the recent interpretations ofKant's theory of punishment (for instance Byrd's)propose a mixed theory of retributivism and generalprevention. Although both elements are literallyright, I try to show the shortcomings of each. I thenargue that Kant's theory of punishment is notconsistent with his own concept of law. Thus I proposeanother justification for punishment: specialdeterrence and rehabilitation. Kant's critique ofutilitarianism does not affect this alternative, whichmoreover has textual support in Kant and is fullyconsistent with his concept of law.

  • Clinical Efficacy of Dantian Jiangzhi Pill Combined with Simvastatin in Treatment of Hyperlipidemia
    Progress in Modern Biomedicine, 2012
    Co-Authors: Wang Shu-min
    Abstract:

Objective: To investigate the curative effect of Dantian Jiangzhi pill combined with simvastatin in treatment of hyperlipidemia. Methods: 90 hyperlipidemia patients were randomly divided into treatment group and control group,45 cases in each groups.Patients in control group were treated with simvastatin, while patients in treatment group were treated with Dantian Jiangzhi pill combined with simvastatin. The clinical efficacy of two groups were observed after eight weeks. Results: In both treatment group and control group, the serum total cholesterol(TC),triglyceride(TG),low density lipoprotein cholesterol(LDL-C) were significantly lower and the high density lipoprotein cholesterol(HDL-C) was significantly increased after treatment compared with those before treatment(P0.05).The change degree of all the index in treatment group were obviously superior than those in control group(P0.05).The total effective rates were 95.56% and 88.98% in treatment group and control group respectively. The clinical efficacy in treatment group was obviously superior than that in control group(x2=7.01,P0.05).Conclusion: Using Dantian Jiangzhi pill combined with simvastatin has a better clinical efficacy than using simvastatin alone in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.

  • trace element and strontium isotope constraints on sedimentary environment of ediacaran carbonates in southern anhui south china
    Chemical Geology, 2009
Co-Authors: Yanyan Zhao, Yongfei Zheng, Fukun Chen
    Abstract:

Abstract Two units of sedimentary carbonates in association with Neoproterozoic glaciations occur in the Lantian Formation of the Ediacaran system, equivalent to the Doushantuo Formation elsewhere in South China. Trace elements and strontium isotopes in the carbonates were analyzed by stepwise dissolutions with different strengths of acid. The results show that the carbonate component dissolved in 0.5 M acetic acid (Dissolution I) is principally composed of calcite and almost free from non-carbonate contamination. Thus its element and isotope compositions can be used to unravel the geochemical feature of water from which the carbonates precipitated. The strontium concentrations and isotope ratios, REE + Y concentrations and patterns of Dissolution I from the carbonates are similar to each other between the two units. They exhibit high strontium concentrations and high 87 Sr/ 86 Sr ratios, depletion of LREE relative to MREE and HREE, minor positive La anomalies, subtle negative Ce, Gd and Er anomalies, and near-chondritic Y/Ho ratios. These indicate that the Lantian carbonates were precipitated from the similar nature of basin water, which is devoid of trace element composition typical of normal marine carbonates but similar to those in freshwater carbonates. The negative Ce anomalies in the carbonates of the two units suggest oxygenation of the precipitation water. Therefore, the Lantian carbonates would form in a continental marginal basin, with predominant contributions from freshwater and high sedimentary rates. Since the Doushantuo–Lantian carbonate secessions may probably correspond to the chemical sediments of post-Marinoan and post-Gaskiers, it is hypothesized that the freshwater would originate from locally deglacial meltwater with significant inputs from continental weathering.
