  • uncovering the secrets of Daoism fus using digital dao fa hui yuan
International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries, 2012
Co-Authors: Xiaoxiao Feng, Koichi Matsumoto, Shigeo Sugimoto
    Abstract:

This paper is about a digital archive named Digital Dao-Fa Hui-Yuan (DDFHY) [1]. DDFHY is a collection of Fus and composed of 268 volumes. A Fu is a secret graphic symbol. The relationships among Fus are not well understood because of the huge number of Fus and the secrecy of Daoism. We analyzed the relationships and examined the distribution of all parts, Fus and volumes in order to discover relationships between pairs of volumes of DDFHY. In our study, we found some interesting new relationships between some volumes. The analysis methods used for analyzing the relationships between Fus and volumes were discussed with Daoism researchers and evaluated by them, to improve the analysis methods in this study.

  • digital archive dao fa hui yuan for Daoism research
International Conference on Asian Digital Libraries, 2011
Co-Authors: Xiaoxiao Feng, Koichi Matsumoto, Shigeo Sugimoto
    Abstract:

Dao Fa Hui Yuan (???), is an important resource for the study of Daoism. It is a compilation of a number of Fus used in Daoism. A Fu is expressed as a complex graphical symbol composed of one or more constituent parts. This paper presents the Dao Fa Hui Yuan digital archive named Digital DFHY which is designed to help researchers explore relationships among sacred symbols of yet unknown meaning and associated natural language text. Some of the descriptions of Fus in DFHY include only the name and the graphic expression of a Fu, and others include descriptions of the constituent parts of a Fu in addition to its name and graphic expression. This paper describes the Digital DFHY, and how it can be used with a network analysis tool to identify relationships among the Fus and their constituent parts.

  • Daoism and chinese martial arts
    Dao, 2014
    Co-Authors: Barry Allen
    Abstract:

The now-global phenomenon of Asian martial arts traces back to something that began in China. The idea the Chinese communicated was the dual cultivation of the spiritual and the martial, each perfected in the other, with the proof of perfection being an effortless mastery of violence. I look at one phase of the interaction between Asian martial arts and Chinese thought, with a reading of the Zhuangzi 莊子 and the Daodejing 道德經 from a martial arts perspective. I do not claim that the authors knew about martial arts. It was not Daoist masters who took up martial arts, but martial arts masters who, at a specific time, turned to Daoism to explain the significance of their art. Today, though, Daoist concepts are ubiquitous in martial arts literature, and a reading of these classics from a martial arts perspective shows how they lend themselves to philosophical thinking about this practice.

  • A Dao of Technology?
    Dao, 2010
    Co-Authors: Barry Allen
    Abstract:

Scholars have detected hostility to technology in Daoist thought. But is this a problem with any machine or only some applications of some machines by some people? I show that the problem is not with machines per se but with the people who introduce them, or more exactly with their knowledge. It is not knowledge as such that causes the disorder Laozi and Zhuangzi associate with machines; it is confused, disordered knowledge—superficial, inadequate, unsubtle, and artless. In other words the problem is not with machines but with the ethics of engineering and the government of technology. The Daoist argument does not devalue machines or knowledge of them; instead, it sets a new goal, defining an alternative ideal—alternative to techniques held hostage to despotic ideas about efficiency and profit.

  • Daoism and ecology an interview with james miller

    Co-Authors: Stephen K Levine
    Abstract:

Creative Arts Educ Ther (2019) 5(2):109–112 DOI: 10.15212/CAET/2019/5/23 Daoism and Ecology—An Interview with James Miller 道家思想与生态学:詹姆士·米勒访谈 Abstract The interview focuses on James Miller’s thinking about the relation between Daoism and ecology. Miller believes that, to develop a foundation for ecological sustainability, we need to break down the separation between human beings and the world we live in. This can be done by Daoist techniques of bodily cultivation, based on the concept of the body as porous and interpenetrating with the environment. Practices such as these will lay the groundwork for an aesthetic foundation of ecology.

    Co-Authors: Stephen K Levine
    Abstract:

Creative Arts Educ Ther (2019) 5(2):113–116 DOI: 10.15212/CAET/2019/5/24 Review: James Miller, China’s Green Revolution: Daoism and the Quest for a Sustainable Future 书评: 詹姆士.米勒,中国的绿色革命:问“道”,探索可持续性发展的未来 Abstract This review outlines Miller’s argument that the Daoist tradition offers an important perspective for ecological thought based on the pervasion of nature in human existence and the porosity of the human body. Somatic practices can build a basis for the aesthetic perception necessary for ecological action. The reviewer suggests that there is a possible convergence between Daoism and the thinking of poiesis that shows the importance of the creative and expressive arts in ecological theory and practice. Keywords: Daoism, ecology, wu-wei, cultivating the Dao, somaesthetics, poiesis
