  • Green Storm-water Infrastructure Strategy Generation and Assessment Tool
    2019
    Co-Authors: Nizar Eldaher
    Abstract:

Green Stormwater Infrastructure (GSI), which includes elements like green roofs, bioretentions, pervious pavement and cisterns, has proven to be a cost effective alternative that can achieve a wider range of benefits in stormwater management compared to the single-purpose grey/traditional infrastructure (Combined Sewer System or Municipal Separate Storm and Sewer System). However, the implementation of GSI as a replacement or support system for grey infrastructure faces some barriers preventing its adoption by planners/designers and decision makers, in the private as well as in the public sector. While understanding and quantifying the full costs and the benefits of GSI plans are critical for sound decision making and to facilitate its adoption, planners/designers face challenges pertaining to hydrologic calculations (including sizing of Green Stormwater Infrastructure Elements (GSIEs), cost estimation (life cycle costs) and benefit assessment). This thesis presents a proof of concept tool (prototype) that is developed to help planners/designers and different stakeholders involved in conducting a comprehensive GSI planning process. The tool generates GSI alternative solutions (combination and size of GSIEs) that meet the user’s financial and hydrologic objectives. These alternatives are generated to maximize benefits, reduce costs and account for design specifications and multi-functionality of GSI. The prototype has three Modules: An Interface Module (including Input and Output Interfaces) A Process Module for hydrology, cost and benefit calculation and an optimization model for strategy generation.A Database Module for storing collected data that are used for different process Module calculations. The prototype, which is developed in Ms. Excel, was successfully tested for functionality and usability on a residential development site in Pittsburgh, PA. The prototype required minimal input from the user (site specific data) and generated strategies that double the net annual benefits compared to the plan proposed by the developer. The tool also allowed generation of strategy scenarios that responded to multiple user objectives.

  • an expert system for acoustic diagnosis of power circuit breakers and on load tap changers
    Expert Systems With Applications, 2015
Co-Authors: Akhtar Hussain, Myeonsong Choi, Seungjae Lee, Fouad Brikci
    Abstract:

An expert system for acoustic diagnosis of OLTCs and CBs is proposed. The expert system can locate the cause of each anomaly in a broader spectrum.Acoustic signature features have been extraction in both time and frequency domains.Eminent speech processing techniques are utilized for feature extraction and comparison.Repeated testing of same device may assure the accurate diagnosis. Most of the faults on power Circuit Breakers (CBs) and On-Load Tap Changers (OLTCs) on high voltage transformers are of mechanical origin. Mechanical malfunction, mechanical wear and other types of abnormal behaviors can be detected as changes in the acoustic signatures. In this paper, an Expert System (ES) with the addition of a signal processor Module and factual Database Module to the conventional ES has been proposed for the diagnosis of CBs and OLTCs. The feature extraction of the acoustic signatures has been done by decomposing them into voiced and silent portions in time domain and through FFT spectrum analysis in frequency domain. The OLTC's motor current has been decomposed into inrush, steady-state and extended currents to locate the cause of different anomalies in the OLTCs and acoustic-current pair has been used for the synchronization testing. Each extracted feature of the testing signal has been compared to the similar feature of a reference signal to not only identify the health of the testing device but also to locate the cause of each anomaly. Several test signals have been compared against the reference signature and the proposed expert system has proved to be a suitable, effective and reliable system for the acoustic diagnosis of OLTCs and CBs.

  • su f p 10 a web based radiation safety relational Database Module for regulatory compliance
    Medical Physics, 2016
    Co-Authors: C Rosen, B Ramsay, S Konerth, D Roller, A Ramsay
    Abstract:

Purpose: Maintaining compliance with Radioactive Materials Licenses is inherently a time-consuming task requiring focus and attention to detail. Staff tasked with these responsibilities, such as the Radiation Safety Officer and associated personnel must retain disparate records for eventual placement into one or more annual reports. Entering results and records in a relational Database using a web browser as the interface, and storing that data in a cloud-based storage site, removes procedural barriers. The data becomes more adaptable for mining and sharing. Methods: Web-based code was written utilizing the web framework Django, written in Python. Additionally, the application utilizes JavaScript for front-end interaction, SQL, HTML and CSS. Quality assurance code testing is performed in a sequential style, and new code is only added after the successful testing of the previous goals. Separate sections of the Module include data entry and analysis for audits, surveys, quality management, and continuous quality improvement. Data elements can be adapted for quarterly and annual reporting, and for immediate notification of user determined alarm settings. Results: Current advances are focusing on user interface issues, and determining the simplest manner by which to teach the user to build query forms. One solution has been to prepare library documents that a user can select or edit in place of creation a new document. Forms are being developed based upon Nuclear Regulatory Commission federal code, and will be expanded to include State Regulations. Conclusion: Establishing a secure website to act as the portal for data entry, storage and manipulation can lead to added efficiencies for a Radiation Safety Program. Access to multiple Databases can lead to mining for big data programs, and for determining safety issues before they occur. Overcoming web programming challenges, a category that includes mathematical handling, is providing challenges that are being overcome.

  • Secbase: Database Module to retrieve secondary structure elements with ligand binding motifs.
Journal of chemical information and modeling, 2009
Co-Authors: Oliver Koch, Jason C. Cole, Peter Block, Gerhard Klebe
    Abstract:

Secbase is presented as a novel extension Module of Relibase. It integrates the information about secondary structure elements into the retrieval facilities of Relibase. The data are accessible via the extended Relibase user interface, and integrated retrieval queries can be addressed using an extended version of Reliscript. The primary information about α-helices and β-sheets is used as provided by the PDB. Furthermore, a uniform classification of all turn families, based on recent clustering methods, and a new helix assignment that is based on this turn classification has been included. Algorithms to analyze the geometric features of helices and β-strands were also implemented. To demonstrate the performance of the Secbase implementation, some application examples are given. They provide new insights into the involvement of secondary structure elements in ligand binding. A survey of water molecules detected next to the N-terminus of helices is analyzed to show their involvement in ligand binding. Additi...
