Through an immersive virtual reality environment, the system presented here offers a playful way of learning, through game elements. This serious game allows the user to practice Anesthesia technique with or without aids (tactile or visual) and to receive scores at different levels of difficulty. An important differential is the possibility of the syringe being driven automatically (tactile aid) in order to reproduce trajectories inserted by experienced instructors. Thus, the student can feel as if the instructor was conducting the learner's hand while guiding her or him.

Although several approaches use computational mechanisms to aid learning in this type of training, the reproduction of visual trajectories of medical instruments coupled with haptic assistance (tactile) assistance to increase the apprentice’s sensory perception is little explored. This work proposes, implements and evaluates a method to provide visual and haptic assistance in the accomplishment of needle trajectories in a gamified simulator of Dental Anesthesia. The trajectory executed by a specialist is recorded and reconstructed through B-Spline interpolations, to be displayed to the learner. The path is also used to provide haptic forces, through which the device can guide the apprentice’s hand. The efficiency of the trajectory executed by the user is obtained from the proportion of the trajectory of the expert done correctly. Tolerances in the calculation of efficiency can be modified in order to create different training scenarios with different levels of flexibility. An evaluation of the proposed method was conducted with volunteers, indicating that visual and haptic aids contribute to the correct performance of the trajectory and that prolonged training can improve accuracy.

The objective of this serious game is to promote a more attractive learning strategy that encourages and at the same time evaluates training, reducing risks to patients. For this, it was conducted a literature review about serious games applications related to health care. From these examples, the elements of games that could be added to the current context were highlighted. An analysis of the simulator, describing its most relevant points was performed. Results, as well as discussion of problems, solutions and testing showed that the gamification process was successful and the game can be submitted to the experts evaluation.

The attributes selected were: the update rate, the appearance of the virtual models and the number of viewpoints of the virtual environment, as well as the characteristics of the haptic device. Despite constraints were found, in the perception of the experts, the system may provide realism and help with the training of certain tasks.

In the treatment of ECC, children are often given moderate sedation or general Anesthesia. An estimated 100 000 to 250 000 pediatric Dental sedations are performed annually in the United States. The most common medications are benzodiazepines, opioids, local anesthetics, and nitrous oxide. All are associated with serious adverse events, including hypoxemia, respiratory depression, airway obstruction, and death. There is no mandated reporting of adverse events or deaths, so we don’t know how often these occur. In this article, we present a case of a death after Dental Anesthesia and ask experts to speculate on how to improve the quality and safety of both the prevention and treatment of ECC.
