    At most academic medical institutions, the first level of Library service is provided by health sciences or medical school libraries. For many medical departments, however, these services are also provided by a second-level Library, the Departmental Library. These libraries are usually supported by a specific department, such as surgery, and provide customized services to this sponsor. Departmental libraries continue to play an important role amid the debate over centralized, versus decentralized, Library systems. On the basis of a limited survey, this paper describes a representative medical Departmental Library.

    Abstract:

    The study aims to investigate the role and importance of Departmental Library in satisfying information needs of students. Perceptions of the students of the Department of Management & Business Administration (MBA) (having Departmental Library) and the students of the Department of Library & Information Science (LIS) (who did not have a Departmental Library) were comparatively analyzed. The study assesses the satisfaction level of the respondents from the MBA department with services of their Departmental Library. It also explores the LIS students' opinion about the need of Departmental Library. A questionnaire was distributed among 150 students of both the departments. The results show that most of the respondents from MBA department were satisfied with nearly all of the Departmental Library services. It was also found that most of the respondents from both the departments recommended the provision of online databases and Internet service for their Departmental Library. They also demanded more computers, digital collection and magazines/newspapers. The respondents from MBA department were found more interested in scholarly journals, multimedia services and audiovisual material than the respondents from LIS department. All of the respondents agreed that Departmental Library should be provided in all academic departments of the Islamia University of Bahawalpur.

  • A Century of Progress? Adaptation of the Chemistry Library at the University of Chicago

    Abstract:

    During its nearly 100-year history, the Chemistry Library at the University of Chicago and its librarians have responded to changes in the university and in society, including changes in the practice of librarianship, scientific publishing, chemical research, and higher education. A century of discussion about the benefits and shortcomings of Departmental libraries has also appeared in the Library literature. A review of this literature highlighted a set of issues that influence organizations in their decisions to support Departmental libraries or to consolidate these branch libraries into centralized facilities. In the case of the University of Chicago's Chemistry Library, the relative importance of these various issues changed over time, and led to periodic changes in Library services, physical facilities, and collection practices. Eventually, the traditional Departmental Library model gave way to changes in the institution and in scholarly publishing, creating a "tipping point" which led to the current centralization of the collections and services.

    Abstract:

    The Jewish Studies Library is a special Library of Vienna University Library. When it was founded in 1966 the Jewish Studies Library, which was then a Library belonging to the Department of Jewish Studies, received a gift of books from the Vienna University Oriental Studies Departmental Library. Due to the NS and SS sympathies of the former head of the Oriental Studies Departement, Viktor Christian, especially the books donated to the Jewish Studies Library had to be checked with regard to their provenance. Case studies discussed in the article concern the results of the provenance research with regard to the »Ahnenerbe loan« as well as Ludwig Feuchwanger, a present of the GESTAPO and further restitution cases (Belf bookstore, Wolf Krautstück). Second hand purchases in connection to the acquisition of looted goods in good faith or presents by the Jewish Community Center Vienna could also be established. Although only few looted books could be found in the Jewish Studies Library, the examples discussed in the article show how complex the holdings situation can be in a Library for which the issue of looted books seems at first sight to be irrelevant on account of its foundation date.
