    Abstract:

    Merino ewes lambs from a flock expected to have a high prevalence of Dermatophilosis were examined for lesions at marking, weaning and prior to first shearing. Blood was collected at marking and prior to shearing to enable quantification of T6-lymphocyte antigen levels in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBM) using monoclonal antibody SBU-T6 20–27. A group of the lambs that had persistent and/or severe Dermatophilosis had significantly lower (P < 0.05) mean levels of T6-lymphocyte staining in PBM than those with minimal or no Dermatophilosis in blood samples collected prior to shearing. However, the wide variability of this parameter in resistant and susceptible lambs indicated that this would not be a satisfactory procedure to rank sheep for resistance to Dermatophilosis.

    Abstract Quantification of a T6-lymphocyte antigen in peripheral blood mononuclear cells of sheep was used to select 15 from 48 one year old Merino ewes not previously exposed to Dermatophilus congolensis infection. These sheep were compared in response to challenge with D. congolensis zoospores and levels of T-6 lymphocyte antigen in peripheral blood mononuclear cells with 15 Merino ewes of similar age and strain from a different site that had been treated and recovered from chronic Dermatophilosis. The T-6 lymphocyte antigen level were significantly lower in the chronic Dermatophilosis sheep and they developed significantly more severe lesions than the selected, previously unexposed sheep despite the former sheep having high serum antibody levels to D. congolensis . Measurement of the fleece characteristics, wax and suint concentration showed no differences between the groups that might have explained the considerable differences in their susceptibility to Dermatophilosis.

    Abstract:

    A study on Dermatophilosis in sheep (n = 1432) and goats (n = 1128) was conducted in Northeast Ethiopia. Out of 2560 examined animals, 55 (2.14%) had clinical Dermatophilosis. The respective prevalence in sheep and goats were 1.5% and 2.9%. There was no significant difference (p > 0.05) in prevalence between sheep and goats and different sexes in both species. In goats, the prevalence in young (8.7%) was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than in adults (2.3%). Clinical disease was associated with orf (45% in sheep and 12% in goats), pox (22% in sheep and 18% in goats) and ticks in goats (36%, 12/33). Other risk factors associated with transmission and spread of the disease were discussed. Vaccination against concurrent infections, improved management schemes to alleviate the impact of risk factors and early antibiotic treatment against clinical disease are recommended.

    Abstract:

    A retrospective study of Dermatophilosis was made in livestock (cattle, sheep, horses and goats) of Ethiopia under different situations. The disease was reported for the first time in sheep (8.5%), goats (3.14%) and horses (2.84%) from Ethiopia. The occurrence of the disease in cattle was significantly (p < 0.05) higher in wet (6%) than in dry (3.6%) season and in cross (26.9%) than local (3.2%) breeds. The highest prevalence (35%) was noted in cross breeds kept under poor management in the rainy season. The threat of Dermatophilosis to animal production in Ethiopia is indicated. Environmental and management risk factors associated with the occurrence of the disease in Ethiopia are identified. The identified risk factors in this study may contribute to the knowledge of devising an optimal intervention in the control of the disease.

  • Bovine Dermatophilosis and its influencing factors in central Ethiopia.

    Abstract:

    A study of bovine cutaneous Dermatophilosis was carried out on a total of 6530 animals under different management systems. Of the 6530 animals examined, 334 (5.1 %) were found to be positive. A significantly (P > 0.01) higher breed susceptibility was found in Holstein–Friesian cattle (12.8 %) than in the local zebu (4.8 %). The prevalence of the disease on feed-lots, a ranch, traditional farms and urban dairy farms was 2.9 %, 4.2 %, 7.1 % and 12.8 % respectively. Management and breed differences were found to be very important risk factors associated with the disease. However, other factors, including ticks, were also found to be apparently associated with the disease, indicating a complex interplay of several factors in the pathogenesis of Dermatophilosis. Possible measures to be taken into account in the control of the disease are suggested.

    A cross-sectional study was conducted from June, 2013 to October, 2014 to determine the prevalence and associated risk factors of clinical bovine Dermatophilosis in dairy cattle in selected districttowns of West Shewa Zone. A total of 816 dairy cattle from 60 dairy farms were clinically examined for skin lesion followed by microscopic examination of skin scrapings. The overall individual animal and herd level prevalence of clinical Dermatophilosis were 5.0% and 18.3%, respectively. Agro-ecology, management system,ecto-parasite infestations were risk factors significantly associated with its occurrence. Consequently, the prevalence was significantly higher in cattle in mid land altitude than cattle in highlands; in cattle under semi-intensive than in intensive management system and in ecto-parasite infested than non-infested ones. However, other studied variables such as herd size, age, sex and breed did not show significant associations ( p <0.05) with the disease. These findings indicate the interactions of the risk factors for the occurrence of clinical Dermatophilosis in the study area. Consequently, clinical Dermatophilosis might have adverse effects on production and productivity of dairy cattle. Therefore, good husbandary practices such as control of ecto-parasite and proper therapeutic intervention are of paramount importance for control of clinical bovine Dermatophilosis and to reduce lossess associated to the disease.
