  • a Design Day for building load and energy estimation
    Building and Environment, 1999
    Co-Authors: Tianzhen Hong, S K Chou, T Y Bong
    Abstract:

Abstract We describe how a Design Day for building energy performance simulation can be selected from a typical meteorological year of a location. The advantages of the Design Day weather file are its simplicity and flexibility in use with simulation programs. The Design Day is selected using a weather parameter comprising the daily average dry bulb temperature and total solar insolation. The selection criterion addresses the balance between the need to minimise the part-load performance of the air-conditioning systems and plants and the number of hours of load not met. To validate the versatility of the Design Day weather file, we compare simulation results of the peak load and load profile of a building obtained from the DOE-2.1E code and a specially developed load estimation program, PEAKLOAD. PEAKLOAD is developed using the transfer function method and ASHRAE databases. Comparative results are in good agreement, indicating that a Design Day thus selected can be used when quick answers are required and simulations using a TMY file cannot be easily done or justified.

  • Cold Thermal Energy Storage
    Renewable and Alternative Energy, 2017
    Co-Authors: Franc F. Kosi, M A Galil, Mirko S. Komatina, B. Zivkovic, Djordje Antonijevic, Uroš M. Milovančević
    Abstract:

The chapter gives an overview of cold thermal energy storage (CTES) technologies. Benefits as well as classification and operating strategies of CTES are discussed. Design consideration and sizing strategies based on calculated load profile for Design Day is presented. Some recommendation concerning Designing of CTES equipment are given. Special attention was paid to the analysis of specific features of heat transfer phenomena in ice storage tank including the assessment of the duration and the rate of ice formation and melting. The methodology of sizing components of the ice thermal storage system included in an air conditioning system for an office building situated in hot wet and dry climate are presented. Based on hourly cooling load calculation that was carried out using Carrier's Hourly Analysis Program, sizing of ice thermal storage system for different operating strategies included full, chiller priority and ice priority storage operation for the Design Day are presented. Finally, an analysis of some operational characteristics of the system are analyzed.

  • Guidebook for Preparing and Using Airport Design Day Flight Schedules - Guidebook for Preparing and Using Airport Design Day Flight Schedules
    2016
Co-Authors: Patrick Kennon, Robert Hazel, Omar El-sayed, Frederick Busch, Rose Agnew, Christina Coverdell, Debra Lubin
    Abstract:

This report is Designed to provide airport leaders an understanding of Design Day flight schedules (DDFS) and their uses, while at the same time provide airport staff and consultants with detailed information on how to prepare one. DDFS are used at airports for a number of different purposes, including the planning and programming of airport operations and facilities, airfield and landside modeling, and construction phasing, among others. In addition to a number of inputs, the assumptions that are also used must be well understood by users to fully understand the analysis from the results. Also, like any forecast, uncertainty is inherent in DDFS, and this uncertainty must be recognized and managed. While DDFS are used routinely in the industry, there are not consistent methods for the development and use of them. One of the purposes of this guidebook is to ensure that users and preparers are fully aware of the advantages and potential pitfalls associated with DDFS. By understanding the assumptions incorporated into and the information generated from a DDFS, airport decision makers can communicate more effectively with the person or persons preparing the DDFS, the scope, and the results. This guidebook discusses the many different projects where a DDFS can best achieve the objective in planning and simulation modeling.

  • Preparing Peak Period and Operational Profilesâ€"Guidebook - Preparing Peak Period and Operational Profiles—Guidebook
    ACRP Report, 2013
Co-Authors: Patrick Kennon, Robert Hazel, Eric Ford, Belinda Hargrove
    Abstract:

This report combines a guidebook with an accompanying interactive CD-ROM that provides airport planners with a set of tools (the “toolbox”) that can be used to convert annual airport activity forecasts into forecasts of daily or hourly peak period activity. The toolbox contains two separate modules to address the flow of airport operations as well as passengers. The operations module allows users to estimate current and future Design Day aircraft operation levels based on user-defined Design Day parameters. This module further enables users to estimate current and future hourly operations as well as peak period profiles, with and without peak spreading. Similarly, the passenger module allows users to estimate current and future Design Day passenger levels, again based on user-defined Design Day parameters. In addition, this application allows users to estimate current and future hourly as well as peak-period passenger profiles, also with and without peak spreading, based on user-defined Design Day parameters. The passenger module also provides an option for modifying hourly profiles with lead and lag factors to assess the impact of passenger flows on passenger processing facilities throughout an airport. The guidebook provides step-by-step instructions for application of the toolbox, with definition of input components and direction for preparing initial estimates, identification of sources of required information, and specific guidelines on how to address various planning problems and issues. The target audience for this guidebook and the accompanying toolbox is airport planners and Designers, their consultants, and anyone else involved in planning airport airfield, terminal, and landside facilities. Specifically, the tools are Designed to scope planning issues and facility requirements, to tailor facility requirements to specific levels of service, and to run multiple scenarios to address uncertainty.

  • Simulation-Aided Airport Terminal Design
Transportation and Development Innovative Best Practices 2008, 2008
Co-Authors: Michel A. Thomet, Farzam Mostoufi
    Abstract:

This paper presents the application of simulation techniques to the Design of the New Curacao Airport Terminal. The purpose of the simulation is to confirm that the Design will meet or exceed IATA Level of Service C (LOS C) planning standards during periods of peak activity of the Design Day. The simulation model is a dynamic, object-oriented passenger movement analysis tool. The model is driven by a realistic flight schedule developed for a 24-hour Design Day, thereby providing passenger volumes and flows that reflect the arrival and departure of aircraft and passengers over the course of an entire Day.
