    Co-Authors: Fornari Raffaele
    Abstract:

Due to climate changes and global warming more care was given to energy efficiency and emissions reduction. Greater interest has been placed on the research of renewable energy sources. Nowadays transportation is one of the most reasons of air pollution and widespread fossil fuel usage. In the last years, the industry and academic research have looked for electric vehicles development. Power electronics plays a crucial role in this field that is continuously growing up. The efficiency maximization, magnetic Design, thermal modeling, Electro Magnetic Compatibility (EMC), system reliability and cost reduction are some aspects demanded by the transport electrification process. In this contest, motor control is another field of interest where the research is investigating new algorithms to improve electric machine performances. All these aspects are dealt with this thesis work that proposes solutions corroborated by simulation models and experimental validations. The first part of the manuscript is related to the presentation of the Design, Function modes and results obtained from power converters intended for electric vehicles and characterized by high efficiency and power density. The electric motor is one of the onboard systems of an electric vehicle, others are located inside the vehicle and upon the working conditions may require a wide range of the input-output voltages. The battery charger is an example of such converters, it can be placed onboard or be outside of the vehicle and the typology is monodirectional or bidirectional as well. The bidirectionality is mandatory when the converter has to manage both phases of propulsion and regeneration to recover energy. The battery pack supplies also other systems strictly related to vehicle safety or involving the comfort of the driver, as the case of illumination, air conditioning and infotainment. This thesis presents in detail two DC-DC power converters: a monodirectional LLC architecture and a bidirectional Dual Active Bridge (DAB). The Design of the resonant tank of the former typology will be carried out in order to satisfy the constraints on the wide output voltage regulation range. For this purpose, the hard-switching commutations will be analyzed when the PWM modulation is adopted at light load and an alternative approach will be proposed to mitigate the effects. In the following, the Design of a DAB with a wide input-output voltage range will be performed. The results will be shown for advanced modulation techniques implemented for the maximization of the conversion’s efficiency on the whole operating range. The motor control theory is analyzed in the last chapters of the thesis and an advanced flux weakening algorithm is presented. The fast transitions from propulsion to regeneration (and vice versa) of the electric machine in flux weakening operations are properly managed by means of this control strategy. During these phases, the saturation and wind-up of the control loop regulators may happen and the torque and power delivered by the motor have been improved by means of a strategy enhanced with a feedforward contribution

  • Multiobjective Optimal Design and Soft Landing Control of an Electromagnetic Valve Actuator for a Camless Engine
IEEE ASME Transactions on Mechatronics, 2013
    Co-Authors: Yee-pien Yang, Yi-ruei Chen, Da-hau Ye, Pai-hsiu Lu
    Abstract:

This paper presents a multiobjective optimal Design and an energy compensation control for the soft valve landing of an electromagnetic valve actuator in internal combustion engines. This axisymmetric and cylindrical actuator is used to achieve continuous and independent valve timing and lifting without mechanical cams, which features a hybrid magnetomotive force with permanent magnet (PM) and electromagnet, and a secondary air gap to prevent the PM irreversibly demagnetizing. The dynamics of the electromagnetic valve are modeled with an equivalent magnetic circuit, which is used to perform both sensitivity analysis and an optimal Design Function to satisfy multiple objectives, such as magnetic holding force, release current, and its rising time. The energy compensation control in which the positive and negative work of an armature stroke is equalized enables a zero landing velocity to be achieved. The experimental results from a prototype actuator show that the landing velocity can be greatly reduced by adjusting the duty cycle of the landing current, and the actuating power is greatly reduced after the energy compensation control is applied.

  • cleanroom software engineering developing software under statistical quality control
    Encyclopedia of Software Engineering, 2002
    Co-Authors: Harlan D. Mills, Richard C Linger
    Abstract:

Cleanroom software engineering is a theory-based, team-oriented engineering process for developing and certifying very high quality software under statistical quality control. (The name “Cleanroom” was chosen in analogy to the precision engineering of hardware cleanrooms.) Cleanroom software engineering methods include box structure specification and Design, Function-theoretic correctness verification, incremental development, and usage-based statistical testing for certification of software fitness for use. Cleanroom teams are organized into specification, development, and certification (testing) roles. The Cleanroom process originated in IBM in the mid-1980s to bring engineering rigor to software development. Cleanroom software engineering has been applied with excellent results in a variety of system developments, and continues to evolve as an engineering technology. Keywords: statistical quality control; software; cleanroom management process; cleanroom software development; verification; cleanroom; certification; results

  • adopting cleanroom software engineering with a phased approach
    Ibm Systems Journal, 1994
    Co-Authors: P A Hausler, Richard C Linger, C J Trammell
    Abstract:

Cleanroom software engineering is a theory-based, team-oriented engineering process for developing very high quality software under statistical quality control. The Cleanroom process combines formal methods of object-based box structure specification and Design, Function-theoretic correctness verification, and statistical usage testing for reliability certification to produce software approaching zero defects. Management of the Cleanroom process is based on a life cycle of development and certification of a pipeline of user-Function increments that accumulate into the final product. Teams in IBM and other organizations that use the process are achieving remarkable quality results with high productivity. A phased implementation of the Cleanroom process enables quality and productivity improvements with an increased control of change. An introductory implementation involves the application of Cleanroom principles without the full formality of the process; full implementation involves the comprehensive use of formal Cleanroom methods; and advanced implementation optimizes the process through additional formal methods, reuse, and continual improvement. The AOEXPERT/MVS™ project, the largest IBM Cleanroom effort to date, successfully applied an introductory level of implementation. This paper presents both the implementation strategy and the project results.

  • cleanroom software engineering for zero defect software
International Conference on Software Engineering, 1993
    Co-Authors: Richard C Linger
    Abstract:

Cleanroom software engineering is a theory-based, team-oriented process for developing very high quality software under statistical control. Cleanroom combines formal methods of object-based box structure specification and Design, Function-theoretic correctness verification, and statistical usage testing for quality certification to produce software that has zero defects with high probability. The process of cleanroom development and certification is carried out incrementally. Interface and Design errors are rare because at each stage the harmonious operation of future increments at the next level of refinement is predefined by increments already in execution. The cleanroom process is being successfully applied in IBM and other applications. Quality results from several cleanroom projects are summarized. >
