    Abstract:

    This paper proposed an optimization scheme for solar enhanced natural draft dry cooling tower Design, in which a detailed cost model was proposed including capital, labour, maintenance and operation costs of each component. Based on the developed cost model, the optimal Design Option can be identified in terms of the relatively lower annual cost and the relatively higher total extra income over the Solar Enhanced Natural Draft Dry Cooling Tower (SENDDCT) lifetime. As a case study, a SENDDCT was optimally Designed to meet the cooling demand for a 50 MW geothermal power plant with Engineered Geothermal System (EGS) technology. The results showed that the optimized SENDDCT not only has better cooling performance during the daytime but also is a cost effective Option for EGS geothermal power plants.

    Abstract:

    Abstract Solar enhanced natural draft dry cooling tower (SENDDCT) is a new heat rejection device using solar energy to enhance its cooling performance. In an attempt to find out the optimal structural arrangement of SENDDCT, this paper conducts three-dimensional CFD simulations to compare cooling performances of various Design Options. The simulations commence by investigating whether the Design Option with lower-height heat exchangers at collector entrance has better cooling performance than that with partial blockage at the same location. Then the simulations compare the thermal performances of SENDDCTs with different sunroof and tower shape Design, namely horizontal sunroof plus parabolic tower or titled sunroof plus cylindrical tower. Finally, analyses of the simulation results show that the Design Option with the partial blockage at the collector entrance, horizontal sunroof and parabolic tower would be the optimal selection in terms of thermal performance and structural robustness.

    Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to identify interdependent barriers to the search and selection of new technologies by Design engineers at industry, organisation and individual levels. A “proof of concept” HyCon tool is presented to demonstrate the role of information technology Design support tools in supporting Designers to overcome these inhibitors, in this case for hybrid concrete, by providing immersive and interactive, information‐rich environments to explore Design solutions.Design/methodology/approach – The HyCon tool was developed through a prototyping methodology encompassing a testing, analysis, Design and coding iterative cycle. This was supported by case studies and industry workshops.Findings – The results of a collaborative research project are presented, which describes the HyCon Design support tool to promote the understanding and use of hybrid concrete in structural frames.
