A new simplified thermal Design Tool for architects

Energy-efficient Design strategies therefore, require architects and engineers to work closely together in optimising the building shell. However, this is not always practical. Architects must therefore, be able to perform a preliminary thermal analysis if energy efficient Design strategies are to succeed. Existing Tools do not cater for them or fit their Design methodology. A need therefore exists for a simplified thermal Design Tool for architects. This article discusses the development of a Tool to fulfil this requirement.

A thermal Design Tool for buildings in ground contact

Richards, Edward Henry MathewsAbstract:Abstract Simulation of the heat flow into the ground underneath a building is usually performed by means of involved calculation procedures which do not take into account other heat flow paths. An efficient Design Tool for buildings in ground contact is lacking. This paper consequently describes how heat flow into the ground can be simplified and incorporated in an efficient Design Tool. The Design Tool is based on a first order thermal model calculated by means of straightforward equations. Other features of the Design Tool include the simulation of multizone behaviour, comfort temperatures, time dependent thermal parameters such as variable ventilation as well as alternative air-conditioning systems such as evaporative and structural cooling. The proposed simulation of ground contact is validated in 53 existing buildings comprising a wide range of thermal characteristics.

To expedite the handling of complicated Design calculations, a Web-based Design Tool named Microwave Engineering Solutions (MES) was developed as a graduate student project in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at North Dakota State University (NDSU), Fargo, and is described in this paper. JavaScript, PHP, and Perl were used to develop MES, which consists of three Design Tools: 1) FilTech*a Design Tool for analog filters, 2) LMatch*a Design Tool for impedance matching, and 3) MicroLines*a Design Tool for striplines and microwave network analysis. MES is used by Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) students studying various aspects of electromagnetics and is freely available on the Web via the link at http://venus.ece.ndsu.nodak.edu//spl sim/ronelson/MESLink/index.html.

This paper describes the latest version of PDT which is now integrated into the Eclipse platform, enabling the users to accomplish the full development life-cycle of an agent-oriented application in one IDE and also inherit the rich set of product development features that Eclipse provides. This version of PDT also aims to support simpler integration with Tools from other AOSE methodologies where appropriate.
