    Abstract:

    This paper describes a qualitative modelling and simulation approach to designing and Developing Application independent control architectures for automated workcells. A qualitative modelling toolbox, called QMTOOL, was constructed using AI and object-oriented software to achieve this specification. QMTOOL models are built and simulated through interactive dialogue with the user. A model encapsulates the high-level knowledge of the human expert, and a simulation run can verify the design at the specification level. With QMTOOL, visual interaction, direct manipulation of objects, and symbolic computing mechanisms, are all available to the designer.

    Summary form only given. The paper describes a qualitative modelling toolbox for designing and Developing Application independent architectures. The domain chosen to demonstrate the versatility of the work is an advanced robotics workcell that is part of a knowledge-based automation laboratory. Developed out of a remote monitoring Application, the toolbox uses object-oriented software and encapsulates knowledge-based information from a human expert to construct the model. Being object-oriented there is full inheritance between individual objects. It was considered feasible that the original work could be the basis of a design tool for automation architectures.

Using VR technology, Matsushita Electric Works, Ltd. has been Developing Application systems for industrial use since 1990. This paper details four VR Application systems: a relax/refresh system employing VR, a horseback riding therapy simulator with VR technology, a VR-supported kitchen layout design system, as well as an urban planning VR system.

  • Web Service Customization Based on Service Feature Model

    Service-oriented Computing (SOC) has become one of the most preferred distributed computing paradigms which utilize services as elements for designing and Developing Application systems. In SOC, consumers who have different functional and non-functional requirements might consume services offered by various providers. Faced with the increasing number of Web services and the diversity of service consumers' requirements, how to select and customize service models to satisfy consumers' personalized requirements remains an important issue. To this end, we adopt a model-driven development approach to customize services based on service feature modeling (SFM). Since SFM builds upon feature modeling (FM), it inherits the advantages of the latter. Furthermore, it takes into account service consumers' non-functional requirements with the attributes and attributes type that are not considered in the general feature model technique. A prototype shows the feasibility of the proposed approach.

    Ubiquitous computing represents the next wave of distributed computing, which focus on integrating computers with various wearable, mobile, and sensor devices, thus making computing and communication essentially transparent to the users. This type of environments mainly consists of myriad of embedded computing nodes interacting in transparent fashion to provide different services to the users. In addition to being resource-constrained, Applications in these environments are context-sensitive and often operate in mobile ad hoc networks. Although different types of context-sensitive Applications with diverse focus have been developed for ubiquitous computing environments, no general methods are available for Developing Application software for the above environments. In this paper, the development of context-sensitive distributed software for ubiquitous computing environments is presented.
