    Abstract:

    Negative outcomes for students of color and those who are economically disadvantaged are troubling patterns in schools nationwide. Systemic racial disparities, including disproportional poverty, are part of the problem. Regardless of their race, however, children who live with poverty often have heightened exposure to adverse experiences. Implementing a culturally responsive trauma-informed approach to understand and respond to students can address the impact of disparities, teach resiliency skills, and promote the wellbeing and achievement of all students. This study describes a school-university collaboration to develop such a Model. Findings explore school personnel’s perceptions about race, trauma, and the stressors their students face in the context of the Developing Model.

    Abstract:

    On the basis of analysis of the characteristics, advantages and disadvantages of small towns' development in Shaanxi province, the author considered that the development of Shaanxi small towns must integrate with its regional advantage resources utilization, non-agricultural industries expanding and eco-environment harness. Besides, laying emphasis on the most important small towns' growth, adjusting measures to local conditions and choosing suitable Developing Models are also needed to carry out. In view of that, the author has brought up the Developing Models of small towns under the condition of the Shaanxi three geographical regions and six different urbanization type zones. In order to promote the small towns' development, some policy propositions have been suggested in the last part of the paper.

  • A New Intelligent Model for Computing Crack in Compacted Soil-Biochar Mix: Application in Green Infrastructure

    There have been studies analysing water retention and cracking in soil-biochar mix, but there is lack of Model for estimating cracking in these kind of mixture. These Models can be useful as it can be directly inputted in governing equations of seepage analysis for further analysing stability of green infrastructure. The objective of this study is to develop a Model for computing crack as function of water content, suction and biochar content. Neural network-based Modelling was adopted to achieve the objective. A series of experiments were conducted to quantify cracking in soil biochar composite using a novel crack intensity factor as a function of water retention and soil suction in five different soils with varying biochar content (i.e., 0%, 2%, 5%, 10% and 15%). The biochar was obtained from an invasive weed (i.e., Water hyacinth). The data obtained from the experimental study was then used for Developing Model using Artificial neural networks (ANN) technique. A single ANN Model was developed and validated with the testing data. The Model was found to give satisfactory performance. This Model can be useful in improving the water balance calculation in green infrastructure as well as agricultural fields (subjected to extreme drying-wetting season).
