  • Relationships between urban Development Level and urban vegetation states: A global perspective

    Abstract:

    Abstract Urban Development exerts both benign and malignant impacts on urban vegetation. Mixed results have been reported regarding the responses of urban vegetation to urbanization. However, these results are limited by both sample size and location. It is essential to conduct global-scale research in urban areas with various Development Levels in order to acquire a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between urban Development and vegetation states. Thus, we firstly created an urban Development score to quantify the Development intensity of 68,651 urban areas across 14 biomes through using nighttime light and population density data. We then classified each urban area into a relative Development Level according to the score and biome. Based on the urban Development scores and Levels, we determined the relationship between urban Development and vegetation states, as represented by the remote-sensed vegetation index. Findings suggested that four distinct types of relationships exist across biomes, namely positive, convex (positive then negative), non-significant, and negative. The positive corrections were commonly found between urban Development and vegetation states especially in less-productive biomes such as deserts and open shrublands. However, the positive correlations diminished and eventually turned negative as urban areas became more developed and/or were located in more productive biomes. Turning points of the relationship between urban Development and vegetation states were detected in four biomes that have moderate productivity. Completely negative relationships were only found in highly productive tropical and temperate biomes. The results of this study call for a closer examination of the altered urban vegetation states as the result of human engineering.

  • Assessing the Development Level of China's National Sustainable Communities at County Level

    Abstract:

    In this paper the sustainable Development Level of 77 China national sustainable communities at county Level was assessed. An assessment indicator system was designed composing of 3 first-Level indicators and 14 second-Level indicators. The entropy method was employed to calculate the Development index and sustainable Development Level of selected cities. Based on cluster analysis results, the studied cities were categorized into three patterns, i.e. highly coordinated, moderately coordinated and low coordinated. The coordination index was 0.69±0.08, 0.48±0.05 and 0.32±0.05, taking up 9.09%, 51.95% and 38.96% of the total respectively. The three kinds of sustainable Development pattern were then compared in terms of their economic, social and environmental Development Level, so as to set directions for raising the sustainable Development Level of county-Level cities.

    Keywords: urban sustainable Development; entropy method; coordination index; sustainable Development Level Abstract. Urban city plays important roles in the Development of urban China. It is of highly strategic significance to evaluate the urban sustainable Development Level. In this paper, an assessment indicator system was designed composing of 4 first-Level indicators and 20 second-Level indicators. The entropy method was employed to calculate the Development index of economic, social, resource and environmental subsystems, coordination index and sustainable Development Level of Xicheng District in Beijing during 2004-2013. An increase trend for sustainable Development Level was observed, from 0.30 in 2004 to 0.67 in 2013. The coordination index fluctuated with the best performance of 0.82 in 2007 and worst performance of 0.36 in 2004. The percentage of economic, social, resource and environmental subsystems was 20.03%, 40.53%, 18.13% and 21.31% respectively, and the sustainability index of social, economic and resource showed an increase trend during the past ten years.

    Abstract:

    In today's world, a resort is a popular place that provides not only relaxation and recreation but also beautiful surroundings, high quality food, even facilities to exercise and do other healthy activities. Planning the Development Level is one of the more important processes in a resort Development project. However, planners often subjectively overestimate the project or cater to the preferences of the investors, resulting in an over-developed or imbalanced Development. This paper provides a system that helps the planner to search for near-optimal amenity Development Level. Integrating genetic algorithms and simulation, it employs a dual-loop optimization model to propose advice to be used in the planning stage. Because the complex and dynamic analysis is done by the system instead of by the planner, it speeds up the decision-making process of the planning stage.

  • ANALYSIS ON CHARACTERISTICS AND COMPREHENSIVE EVALUATION OF COUTY'S Development Level IN THE XIANGJIANG RIVER BASIN

    Abstract:

    Since the 1990s',county's society and economy has rapidly Development in the Xiangjiang river basin and it has been a focus for researchers.Based on the evaluated model of county's Development Level in the Xiangjiang river basin,selected 1991a and 2008a as the cross section,this paper analyzes change of county's Development Level in the Xiangjiang river basin in recent 20 years,divides the dynamic types of county's Development Level,analyzes the characteristics of change and reveals the reason of regional differences.Based on county's Development Level in 2008a and combined with the change of regional ranking of county's Development Level from 1991 to 2008,fifteen different types are diagnosed,which are the highest Level and ascending,high Level and descendent,normal Level and ascending,low Level and ascending,and lower Level and descendent,etc. The results show that the change of county's Development Level in the Xiangjiang river basin is marked different,with time change,the gap of county's Development Level has been expanded,the spatial distribution of county's Development Level increasingly is concentrated.The mainly affecting factors of the dynamic changes of county's Development Level include that regional conditions,resource endowments,historical basis,special industries and regional Development policies.On this basis,this paper proposed some strategies to increase county's Development Level in the Xiangjiang river basin.
