Implementing product design Development Methodology for assessing and improving the performance of products
International Journal on Interactive Design and Manufacturing (IJIDeM), 2015Co-Authors: Imad Alsyouf, Alam Al-alami, Ali SaidamAbstract:The purpose of this paper is to investigate how to assess and improve the performance of products. The main objectives are to assess the products flaws and their causes, analysis the most critical problems, suggest and choose the best solution. The main contribution of this paper is introducing a verified procedure that combines a variety of tools and methods from different disciplines used in a new context. The applicability of this procedure was tested in a real world case study. The study is conducted at a private company operating in UAE that produces diesel generators. By implementing the suggested product design and improvement Methodology it was possible to identify the most critical problem areas, analyze their impact and root causes, suggest solutions and test the suggested solutions effect on the product performance. The main results of the study can be summarized as: decrease in the average noise level from 74 to 69 dBA; reduction in the average vibration level from 464 to 150 $$\upmu $$ μ m; drop of average engine temperature from 96 to 87 $$^\circ $$ ∘ C. Using product design and Development Methodology helps finding efficient and effective solutions that can improve the products performance, thus increasing the firm competitiveness. The novelty of this paper is its ability to suggest and validate multiple methods and tools that are synthesized into procedural steps for product design improvement that if followed can result in measurable improvement of product performance.

Systems Development Methodology for Mobile Commerce Applications
Transdisciplinary Marketing Concepts and Emergent Methods for Virtual Environments, 2013Co-Authors: Muazzan Binsaleh, Shahizan HassanAbstract:There are several systems Development methodologies including traditional and agile methodologies being utilized in current systems Development. However, it could be argued that when developing mobile commerce applications, suitable Development framework should be investigated as these applications are utilized in different contexts from fixed ecommerce applications. This study identifies suitable system Development Methodology framework for mobile commerce applications. In order to achieve this aim, the practitioners from seven organizations were asked to provide information about their Development methodologies by answering the questions regarding mobile commerce application Development. The questions were opened and aimed to explore practitioner’s perspectives on the Development methodologies. From the practitioner’s perspectives, it was found that there were several Development methodologies being used in mobile commerce application Development and these can be classified into two different Development frameworks which are heavyweight/traditional and lightweight/agile methodologies. The suitable Methodology framework for mobile commerce application Development thus was identified.

Systems Development Methodology for Mobile Commerce Applications
International Journal of Mobile Computing and Multimedia Communications, 2011Co-Authors: Shahizan Hassan, Muazzan BinsalehAbstract:There are several methodologies, including traditional and agile methodologies, being utilized in current systems Development. However, it could be argued that existing Development methodologies may not be suitable for mobile commerce applications, as these applications are utilized in different contexts from fixed e-commerce applications. This study proposes a system Development Methodology for mobile commerce applications. In order to achieve this aim, four objectives are proposed: investigating existing systems Development methodologies used to develop mobile commence applications, identifying strengths and weaknesses of existing Development methodologies, construction of a suitable Methodology for mobile commerce applications, and testing for its applicability and practicality. The research Methodology used in the study is the design research, which includes the steps of awareness of problems, suggestion, Development, evaluation and conclusion. However, this paper only focuses on the first two phases of the whole study, which are awareness of the problem and making suggestions, while the evaluation and conclusion will be conducted as future works.

An ontology Development Methodology to integrate existing ontologies in an ontology Development process
2012Co-Authors: Nelson K. Y. Leung, Sim Kim Lau, Nicole TsangAbstract:Ontology is defined as an explicit specification of a conceptualization while a conceptualization is an abstract, simplified view of the world that we wish to represent for some purpose. To build high quality ontologies, developers are required to choose and follow a suitable ontology Development Methodology in which containing a series of steps, activities and guidelines that are put together in an organized and systematic manner. Literatures show that building ontologies by reusing existing ontologies is more cost effective than building from scratch. However, majority of the methodologies only provide a very limited discussion about how to perform integration or ontology reused in their ontology Development processes. This paper aims to develop a set of guidelines for the selection of ontology reuse methods which has not been explored in any ontology research. In addition, an ontology Development Methodology that incorporates ontology reuse methods and a system that can assist to perform integration semi-automatically is proposed. An application scenario has been developed to illustrate how the proposed Development Methodology can be adopted to create an ontology.

iiWAS - An integration-oriented ontology Development Methodology to reuse existing ontologies in an ontology Development process
Proceedings of the 13th International Conference on Information Integration and Web-based Applications and Services - iiWAS '11, 2011Co-Authors: Nelson K. Y. Leung, Sim Kim Lau, Joshua P Fan, Nicole TsangAbstract:Ontology is defined as an explicit specification of a conceptualization and can be used to provide a shared understanding of a domain which is necessary to overcome differences in terminology from various sources. To build high quality ontologies, developers are required to choose and follow a suitable Methodology containing a series of steps, activities and guidelines organized in a systematic way. In this paper, we develop guidelines on how to select ontology merging or integration which has not been explored in any ontology research. As it is more cost effective to build an ontology reusing existing ontologies (integration and merging) than from scratch, we therefore propose an ontology Development Methodology, MIOD, which incorporates and performs ontology integration in its Development process. A semi-automatic key term evaluation system is developed to find suitable source ontologies from a group of candidate ontologies. The proposed Methodology and system are used to address the insufficiency of current ontology Development and integration methodologies.
