    Abstract:

[EN] In this Final Degree Project, the design and implementation of the automation of the multiple industrial processes carried out in a logistics center has been developed, including a pallet warehouse operated by 2 two-column stacker cranes, 2 Pick and Place robotized stations for palletizing packages of different sizes and a load elevator, among other processes. The design of the automatism in charge of controlling the logistics center processes has been carried out using the GRAFCET methodology, and based on the automated design, a program for the Schneider Electric M241 PLC has been developed in the SoMachine programming environment that implements said automation. The web application is hosted on the web server embedded in the M241 PLC memory, and can be accessed through any web browser installed on PC, Table or Smartphone. The automatism has been designed based on the virtual twin of the logistics center created by means of the industrial process simulation Software Factory I/O, executed on a PC. The virtual twin recreates the processes carried out in the logistics center with a high level of realism, and has been used as a tool for testing and validating the automation implemented in the M241 PLC before applying it to the real logistics center. Co-Authors: Davide Taibi, Fabian Fagerholm, Ilaria Lunesu, Martina Matta, Jurgen Munch, Valentina Lenarduzzi, Muhammad Ovais Ahmad, Kari Liukkunen, Sami Pietinen, Markku Tukiainen
    Abstract:

Entrepreneurs and Small and Medium Enterprises usually have issues on developing new prototypes, new ideas or testing new techniques. In order to help them, in the last years, academic Software Factories, a new concept of collaboration among universities and companies has been developed. Software Factories provide a unique environment for students and companies. Students benefit from the possibility of working in a real work environment learning how to apply the state of the art of the existing techniques and showing their skills to entrepreneurs. Companies benefit from the risk-free environment where they can develop new ideas, in a protected environment. Universities, finally benefit from this setup as a perfect environment for empirical studies in industrial-like environment. In this paper, we present the network of academic Software Factories in Europe, showing how Companies had already benefit from existing Software Factories and reporting success stories. The results of this paper can increase the network of the factories and help other universities and companies to set- up similar environment to boost the local economy. • understanding the role of requirements artifacts in kanban
International Conference on Software Engineering, 2014
Co-Authors: Olga Liskin, Fabian Fagerholm, Kurt Schneider, Jurgen Munch
    Abstract:

User stories are a well-established way to record requirements in agile projects. They can be used as such to guide the daily work of developers or be split further into tasks, which usually represent more technical requirements. User stories and tasks guide communication and collaboration in Software projects. However, there are several challenges with writing and using user stories in practice that are not well documented yet. Learning about these challenges could raise awareness for potential problems. Understanding how requirements artifacts are used for daily work could lead to better guidelines on writing stories that support daily work tasks. Moreover, user stories may not be appropriate to capture all kinds of requirements that are relevant for a project. We explore how to utilize requirements artifacts effectively, what their benefits and challenges are, and how their scope granularity affects their utility. For this, we studied a Software project carried out in the Software Factory at the Department of Computer Science, University of Helsinki. We investigated the requirements artifacts and then interviewed the developers and the customer about their experiences. Story and task cards have helped the participants throughout the project. However, despite having a Kanban board and rich communication within the team, some requirements were still too implicit, which also led to misunderstandings. This and other challenges revealed by the study can guide future in-depth research.

  • a platform for teaching applied distributed Software development the ongoing journey of the helsinki Software Factory
    arXiv: Software Engineering, 2013
Co-Authors: Fabian Fagerholm, Nilay Oza, Jurgen Munch
    Abstract:

Teaching distributed Software development (DSD) in project courses where student teams are geographically distributed promises several benefits. One main benefit is that in contrast to traditional classroom courses, students can experience the effects of distribution and the mechanisms for coping with distribution by themselves, therefore understanding their relevance for Software development. They can thus learn to take more care of distribution challenges and risks when starting to develop Software in industry. However, providing a sustainable environment for such project courses is difficult. A development environment is needed that can connect to different distributed teams and an ongoing routine to conduct such courses needs to be established. This article sketches a picture of the Software Factory, a platform that supports teaching distributed student projects and that has now been operational for more than three years. We describe the basic steps of conducting Software Factory projects, and portray experiences from past Factory projects. In addition, we provide a short overview of related approaches and future activities.

  • on the impact of kanban on Software project work an empirical case study investigation
International Conference on Engineering of Complex Computer Systems, 2011
Co-Authors: Marko Ikonen, Fabian Fagerholm, Petri Kettunen, Elena Pirinen, Pekka Abrahamsson
    Abstract:

The pertinent mission of Software project management is to continuously achieve more and more successful projects. In the field of Software development, the Kanban method has gained momentum recently, mostly due to its linkages to Lean thinking. However, only a few empirical studies investigate the dynamics and impacts of Kanban on projects. The aim of this study is to improve the understanding on how Kanban impacts on Software project work. For the purpose of the study, a framework is developed and empirically investigated in an experimental Software R&D setting called Software Factory. The impact of Kanban is evaluated from nine theoretically derived perspectives. The results highlight new findings regarding the application of Kanban in the Software context. This bears managerial implications, which is addressed. The key implications of the findings suggest that Kanban and its inherent simplicity motivate the workers and control the project activities.

  • the set up of a Software engineering research infrastructure of the 2010s
Product Focused Software Process Improvement, 2010
Co-Authors: Pekka Abrahamsson, Petri Kettunen, Fabian Fagerholm
    Abstract:

Software engineering is one of the few disciplines, which continue to lack university "clinics" for Software (c.f., hospitals in the medical education). There is no facility specifically designed to enable research in Software development that is realistic and open, and where measurement data can freely be shared for verification or other purposes. We can keep up debating the need for setting up such an infrastructure or just go ahead and start building it. Software Factory is an initiative that we have had in mind for many years. Shortly put, the Software Factory is a strategic investment to a new infrastructure supporting Software engineering research, education and entrepreneurship globally. The reference implementation of the Factory is now in place and it is currently expanding to its targeted global networked capacity of up to 150 Software engineers by the end of 2011. Strikingly the Software Factory of today is not intellectually following the earlier undertakings with the same name stemming back in 1980s in Japan or in the US. Rather, it represents the Software development of the 2010s. Early results are more than promising. A new company is about to be launched, fresh and value-oriented research results are quickly emerging, and students find it a place to gain valuable experience.
