  • Devitrification Behavior of Calcium Phosphate Glasses Containing Al2O3 and SiO2 Additives

    Abstract:

    The effects of Al2O3 and SiO2 additives on the crystallization of calcium phosphate glasses were studied. When the Al2O3 content was higher than 7 mol%, surface Devitrification occurred in the glasses. However, for glasses with Al2O3 contents higher than 10 mol%, bulk Devitrification predominanted. For the glasses with SiO2, a surface Devitrification mechanism predominanted. Non-isothermal DTA techniques were applied in order to establish the Devitrification mechanism, and the kinetic parameters of crystal growth were obtained. The parameter m depends on the mechanism and morphology of Devitrification of calcium phosphate, glass containing SiO2 as additive, the values of m being lower than 1.2. These results indicate that the Devitrification is controlled by the reaction at the glass-crystal interface, or occurs from surface nuclei.

    Abstract:

    Abstract The effects of TiO 2 addition on the Devitrification behavior of the calcium phosphate glasses were investigated using thermal analysis techniques. Both the DTA traces of coarse powder and fine powder for calcium phosphate glasses indicated that the glass transition temperature ( T g ), gradually increased. To determine whether the Devitrification begins at the surface or in the bulk of these glasses, we recorded DTA curves of coarse powder and fine powder. By comparing the exothermic peak temperature of coarse powder and fine powder, we found that the two exothermic peak temperatures tend to be nearer when the amount of TiO 2 in calcium phosphate is increased. This indicates that bulk Devitrification or, more appropriately, Devitrification at the internal interface is easier, i.e., TiO 2 is an effective nucleating agent in these glass systems.

    Abstract:

    The formation of a supercooled liquid region and Devitrification behaviour of metallic glasses on heating are discussed in relation with the glass-transition phenomenon observed using differential scanning and isothermal calorimetries as well as X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). One of the most clear sequences of the glassy ↔ supercooled liquid phase transition is the change of the Devitrification behaviour and the kinetics of the Devitrification reaction in Al-based and some other alloys after the transition from the glassy to the supercooled liquid state. The significant variation in the Devitrification behaviour and thermodynamic parameters indicate the difference between the glassy and the supercooled liquid phases.

  • Influence of a supercooled liquid on Devitrification of Cu-, Hf- and Ni- based metallic glasses

    Abstract:

    Abstract The purpose of the present work is to study and compare Devitrification behaviour of some Cu-, Ni- and Hf-based rapidly solidified metallic glasses in relation with supercooled liquid region. Devitrification on heating process was investigated using differential scanning and isothermal calorimetry. The structure was examined by X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The studied alloys exhibit a multistage Devitrification. A large difference in Devitrification behaviour was observed between the studied metallic glasses. The alloys which exhibit the supercooled liquid region, form metastable nanoscale cubic phases. Devitrification behaviour of the studied alloys is compared with that of Ti-, Zr- and Hf-based metallic glasses studied elsewhere.
