    Abstract:

    Im Rahmen von Untersuchungen zum Massenwechsel von Bohnenschädlingen in Kuba wurden Erhebungen zur Fertilität und Mortalität von Diabrotica balteata, Andrector ruficornis und Systena basalis durchgeführt. Das höchste Eiablagepotential liegt bei Diabrotica balteata vor (600 Eier / Weibchen). Die Lebensdauer betrug im Durchschnitt 20 Tage. Weibchen der Art Andrector ruficornis legten 335 Eier ab, wenn ein Lebensalter von 89 Tagen erreicht wurde. Genannte Zahlen beziehen sich auf Tiere aus Laborzuchten. Zu Beginn der Vegetationsperiode im Bohnenfeld gesammelte Käfer beider Arten wiesen eine um 33 bzw. 63 % geminderte Fertilität auf. Das geringste Vermehrungspotential ergab sich bei dem Erdfloh S. basalis mit 23,8 Eiern / Weibchen mit im Feld gesammelten Käfer.In connection with investigations of the population dynamics of bean pests in Cuba were made experiments on the fertility and mortality of Diabrotica balteata, Andrector ruficornis and Systena basalis. The highest fertility was recorded for D. balteata (maximal 600 eggs). The life time reached approximately 20 days. Females of the species A. ruficornis had an egg - production of 335 eggs when reaching a life time of 89 days. The mentioned numbers refer to laboratory reared individuals. Beetles collected in the fields at beginning of the vegetation period had a lower fertility, i.e. approximately 33 and 63 % of the above mentioned. Fertility was lowest with field - collected individuals (23,8 eggs / female) of S. basalis

    Das Fraßvermögen der Blattkäfer Diabrotica balteata Lec., Andrector ruficornis (Oliv.) und Systena basalis Duval. wurde unter Laborbedingungen ermittelt sowie das Fraßvermögen der Larven von Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) an feldgesammelten Bohnenblättern eingeschätzt. Unter Berücksichtigung der Aufenthaltsdauer bzw. Entwicklungszeit der Tiere im Bohnenbestand werden eine Schadquote/Individuum von 70 cm² (D. balteata), 46 cm² (A. ruficornis), 4 cm² (S. basalis) und 0,8 cm² (L. trifolii) veranschlagt.The damage capacity of the leaf beetles Diabrotica balteata Lec., Andrector ruficornis (Oliv.) and Systena basalis Duval. was studied under model conditions (glastubes) and that of Liriomyza trifolii (Burgess) larvae by evaluating bean leaves collected in the field. Considering development time and duration of presence of these dangerous insects in bean crops the damage per individuum was assessed to reach 70 cm² (D. balteata), 46 cm² (A. ruficornis), 4 cm² (S. basalis) and 0,8 cm² (L. trifolii)

    Abstract:

    Plant latex is a known storehouse of various secondary metabolites with demonstrated negative impact on insect fitness. A romaine lettuce cultivar, “Valmaine”, possesses a high level of latex-mediated resistance against the banded cucumber beetle, Diabrotica balteata LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae), compared to a closely related cultivar “Tall Guzmaine”. Latex from damaged Valmaine plants was much more deterrent to adult D . balteata feeding than latex from undamaged plants when applied to the surface of artificial diet under choice conditions; no such difference was found in choice tests with latex from damaged and undamaged Tall Guzmaine plants. The intensities of whiteness and browning were significantly higher in Valmaine latex than in Tall Guzmaine latex. The activities of three enzymes (phenylalanine ammonia lyase, polyphenol oxidase, and peroxidase) significantly increased over time in latex from damaged Valmaine plants (i.e., 1, 3, and 6 days after feeding initiation), but they remained the same in Tall Guzmaine latex. The constitutive levels of phenylalanine ammonia lyase and polyphenol oxidase also were significantly higher in Valmaine latex than in Tall Guzmaine latex. These studies suggest that Valmaine latex chemistry may change after plant damage due to increased activity of inducible enzymes and that inducible resistance appears to act synergistically with constitutive resistance against D . balteata .

    Abstract:

    Latex is widely found among plant species and is known to play a defensive role against certain herbivores. Two romaine lettuce, Lactuca sativa L. (Asteraceae) cultivars, ‘Valmaine’ (resistant) and ‘Tall Guzmaine’ (susceptible), were selected to study the potential of latex as a defense mechanism against the banded cucumber beetle, Diabrotica balteata LeConte (Coleoptera: Chrysomelidae). Latex from Valmaine strongly inhibited feeding of adult D. balteata compared to latex from Tall Guzmaine when applied to the surface of artificial diet. Beetles consumed significantly less diet from disks treated with Valmaine latex than they consumed from diet treated with Tall Guzmaine latex, in both choice and no-choice tests. In a choice test involving diet disks treated with Valmaine latex from young leaves vs. disks treated with latex from mature leaves, the beetles consumed significantly less diet treated with latex from young leaves. No significant difference in diet consumption was found between diets treated with latex from young and mature leaves of Tall Guzmaine in choice tests. Three solvents of differing polarity (water, methanol, and methylene chloride) were tested to extract deterrent compounds from latex; Valmaine latex extracted with water:methanol (20:80) strongly inhibited beetle feeding when applied to the surface of artificial diet. In no-choice tests, fewer beetles were observed feeding on diet treated with water:methanol (20:80) extract of Valmaine latex than on diet treated with a similar extract of Tall Guzmaine latex, resulting in significantly less consumption of the diet treated with the Valmaine latex extract. These studies suggest that moderately polar chemicals within latex may account for resistance in Valmaine to D. balteata.

    Resistance in lettuce, Lactuca sativa L., to feeding by adult banded cucumber beetle, Diabrotica balteata (LeConte), was evaluated using three screening methods: leaf disks, excised leaves and intact leaves attached to plants. Dual-choice and no-choice bioassays were used to evaluate each method based on leaf area consumption. Methods of testing had a significant effect on the level of feeding damage by D. balteata on two lettuce cultivars, Tall Guzmaine and Valmaine. Valmaine expressed a significant degree of resistance to D. balteata damage when intact leaf and excised leaf methods were used in dual-choice bioassays between Tall Guzmaine and Valmaine, but the latter failed to show resistant characteristics in no-choice tests when excised leaves were used. Furthermore, there was no significant difference in D. balteata feeding between Tall Guzmaine and Valmaine in the leaf disk tests. Therefore, whole plants are the best method to evaluate lettuce cultivars for resistance to D. balteata. Reduction or cessation of resistance characters in excised Valmaine whole leaves and disks are discussed with references to potential changes in concentration of feeding stimulants and deterrents and changes in latex pressure.
