Biomarker‐estimated flavan‐3‐ol intake is associated with lower blood pressure in cross‐sectional analysis in EPIC Norfolk

They are therefore of great interest for the development of Dietary Recommendation for the prevention of cardio‐vascular diseases. However, there are currently no reliable data from observational studies, as the high variability in the flavan‐3‐ol content of food makes it difficult to estimate actual intake without nutritional biomarkers. In this study, we investigated cross‐sectional associations between biomarker‐estimated flavan‐3‐ol intake and blood pressure and other CVD risk markers, as well as longitudinal associations with CVD risk in 25,618 participants of the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer (EPIC) Norfolk cohort. High flavan‐ 3‐ol intake, achievable as part of an habitual diet, was associated with a significantly lower systolic blood pressure (− 1.9 (− 2.7; − 1.1) mmHg in men and − 2.5 (− 3.3; − 1.8) mmHg in women; lowest vs highest decile of biomarker), comparable to adherence to a Mediterranean Diet or moderate salt reduction. Subgroup analyses showed that hypertensive participants had stronger inverse association between flavan‐3‐ol biomarker and systolic blood pressure when compared to normotensive participants. Flavanol intake could therefore have a role in the maintenance of cardiovascular health on a population scale

Adhering to the recommended Dietary practice has a significant role in diabetic control, but not uniformly practised. Objective To assess Dietary adherence and glycemic control among type 2 diabetic patients on follow-up at Dilchora Referral Hospital (DRH), Dire Dawa, Eastern Ethiopia. Methods A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted from 22 August to 23 October 2019, at DRH. Data were collected through an interviewer-administered questionnaire. The Perceived Dietary Adherence Questionnaire (PDAQ) was used to estimate the level of Dietary adherence. Glycemic control was measured using fasting blood glucose. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were employed to identify factors associated with Dietary adherence. Results Of the 307 included patients, 62.5% were poorly adherent to the recommended diet. Lack of Dietary education (83.38%) and inability to afford a healthy diet (71.33%) were the perceived barriers to practice Dietary Recommendation. More than half (54.7%) failed to achieve the recommended fasting blood glucose target. In multivariate logistic regression, patients who were adherent to Dietary Recommendations were 3.56 times more likely to have good glycemic control. Those patients living in urban areas, having monthly income greater than 1000 Ethiopia Birr, family history of the disease, duration of treatment greater than 10 years and who received counseling were more likely to have good Dietary adherence. Conclusion The level of adherence to the Dietary Recommendation and glycemic control was low. Healthcare providers should be proactive in tackling the barrier for non-adherence and should promote adherence to Dietary Recommendations in T2DM patients.

Socioeconomic-status and neighborhood support system can influence adherence to Dietary Recommendation. The purpose of our study is to assess the association of household-socioeconomic status and neighborhood-support system with adherence to Dietary Recommendation among persons with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Facility-based cross-sectional-survey was conducted in Brong Ahafo region, Ghana. Six hospitals were randomly selected and 530 individuals with T2DM consecutively recruited from the selected hospitals for the study. Structured-questionnaires were used to collect socio-demographic variables. Adherence to Dietary-Recommendation was the outcome-variable, and was assessed using perceived Dietary-adherence questionnaire. Age (years) (P-value = 0.005), Physical-Activity level (P-value = 0.024) Receive-moderate Social-Support (P-value = 0.004) and High-Socioeconomic status (P-value = 0.046) were significantly correlated with adherence to Dietary-Recommendation. Age (years) regression coefficient (β) -0.089, 95%CI (− 0.12, − 0.001), Being married β0.103, 95%CI (0.002, 0.02), moderate and low-social support system β 0.309, 95%CI (0.17, 0.38) and β-0.192, 95%CI (− 0.26, − 0.06) respectively, and high-socioeconomic status β 0.197, 95%CI (0.06, 0.25) were significantly associated with adherence to Dietary-Recommendation. Social-support system and socioeconomic-status could be associated with adherence to Dietary-Recommendation. Therefore, health workers should consider patients’ social support system and socioeconomic status as modifiable factors for optimum adherence.

However, little is known about actual eating habits of individuals with type 2 diabetic mellitus (T2DM), especially in Japan. Therefore, we sought to (1) assess the Dietary intake of individuals with T2DM, and (2) characterize their intake relative to national Recommendations. This cross-sectional study involved 149 patients (77 males and 72 females) aged 40-79 years with T2DM recruited at a Kyoto hospital. Dietary intake was assessed using a validated self-administered diet history questionnaire. Under-consumption, adequacy, and over-consumption, of nutrients were compared to the age- and sex-based standards of the Japanese Dietary Reference Intakes. Among the results, most notable are (1) the inadequacy of diets in men with respect to intake of vitamins and minerals, likely owing to low intake of vegetables and fruits; (2) excess contributions of fat intake to total energy in both sexes; and (3) excess consumption of sweets and beverages relative to the national average. The prevalence of diabetes complications may be increasing because of a major gap between the typical Dietary intake of individuals with T2DM and Dietary Recommendation.
