  • Digital Curation beyond the “wild frontier”: a pragmatic approach

    Abstract:

    This paper advocates the necessity of developing a pragmatic alternative to the dominant custodial theorization of Digital Curation as an “umbrella concept for Digital preservation, data Curation, electronic records, and Digital asset management”. Starting from a historical account and an examination of prevalent definitions, it points to the current dependence of Digital Curation on a prescriptive approach rooted in its cognate field of Digital preservation, aiming to serve the needs of professional stewardship. It demonstrates the disconnect of this theorization with the rich historical traditions of museum curatorship where the notion of Curation originated, its inability to act as a framework for understanding the diversity and pervasiveness of contemporary Digital Curation practices “in the wild” (such as content Curation, personal archiving, and pro-am digitization), and its dependence on a “wild frontier” ideology dissonant with contemporary critical cultural heritage scholarship. The alternative, pragmatic approach views Digital Curation as a “contact zone” practice, routinely performed by a broad range of actors including researchers, artists, users, and communities, on dynamically evolving objects, domain knowledge representations, and interactions, beyond the Curation life cycle prescribed for custodial environments. On this basis, this study calls for a formal reconceptualization of Digital Curation, adequate knowledge representation of its objects, evidence-based research on Curation practices, and establishment of Curation-enabled Digital infrastructures suitable for Curation in the continuum. Reaching beyond a custodial view, this approach aims to establish Digital Curation as a field of intellectual inquiry relevant to emerging pervasive Curation practices in the Digital environment.

    Abstract:

    Digital Curation emerged as an important new concept in the theory and management of cultural information, not least because of its broad applicability and promise of a universal approach to ensure future “fitness for purpose” of Digital information. This paper explores curatorial traditions in the field of museums and cultural heritage, in order to contribute to the active current debate on the nature, scope and methods of Digital Curation. It uses an approach inspired by cultural-historical activity theory in order, firstly, to understand cur-rent Digital Curation practice, its achievements and limitations; secondly, to explore key ac-tivities in the cultural heritage field, i.e., knowledge production in archaeological field-work and publication, museum Curation, and meaning interaction in exhibition visitor ex-perience. On account of these insights, it concludes that, in order to ensure the declared objective of future “fitness for purpose”, and avoid the risk of epistemic failure, more ef-fort should be dedicated by the Digital Curation community on developing adequate knowledge representation of Digital information in specific epistemic and pragmatic con-texts; that an agency-based approach, using event-centric approaches to represent knowl-edge on the content and context of information, would be particularly useful in some ap-plication domains; and that formal methods to Curation lifecycle based on belief change and ontology evolution could also be used in modelling the co-evolution of the epistemic content and context of curated knowledge.

  • DCC&U: An Extended Digital Curation Lifecycle Model

    The proliferation of Web, database and social networking technologies has enabled us to produce, publish and exchange Digital assets at an enormous rate. This vast amount of information that is either digitized or born-Digital needs to be collected, organized and preserved in a way that ensures that our Digital assets and the information they carry remain available for future use. Digital Curation has emerged as a new inter-disciplinary practice that seeks to set guidelines for disciplined management of information. In this paper we review two recent models for Digital Curation introduced by the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) and the Digital Curation Unit (DCU) of the Athena Research Centre. We then propose a fusion of the two models that highlights the need to extend the Digital Curation lifecycle by adding (a) provisions for the registration of usage experience, (b) a stage for knowledge enhancement and (c) controlled vocabularies used by convention to denote concepts, properties and relations. The objective of the proposed extensions is twofold: (i) to provide a more complete lifecycle model for the Digital Curation domain; and (ii) to provide a stimulus for a broader discussion on the research agenda.

The work was carried out by 5 teams of students in an 8week Digital Curation exploration and development sprint.

    The focus of this article is to share several in-progress research and development open-source approaches that seek to design, build, and test Digital Curation services and repositories that have the potential to scale (the IMLS-funded Fedora DRAS-TIC and the NSF-funded Brown Dog). We also discuss the creation of a big records testbed of justice, human rights, and cultural heritage collections (100 TB and 100 million records), the emergence of Computational Archival Science (CAS), and the resulting efforts at integrating Digital Curation education and research. We ultimately seek to develop a sustainable community of users and developers, with solutions that serve the international library, archives, and scientific data management communities. We are also focused on Digital Curation training and education in these innovative environments.

  • Digital Curation Education at the Universities of Ibadan and Liverpool

    Abstract:

    This article presents the findings of the Ibadan/Liverpool Digital Curation Curriculum Review Project, a research project conducted to formally benchmark the teaching of Digital Curation in the archival education programmes at the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom and the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. It provides background to the history and establishment of both universities and the development of their archives curricula. A matrix was developed using the DigCurV Curriculum Framework to assess whether Digital Curation skills and knowledge outlined in the framework are being taught, practised and tested in the Master’s programmes. These skills and knowledge were assessed according to the four domains outlined in DigCurV: Knowledge and Intellectual Abilities (KIA), Personal Qualities (PQ), Professional Conduct (PC), and Management and Quality Assurance (MQA), to levels appropriate to practitioners and managers. The exercise identified skill and knowledge areas where teaching materials could be shared between the universities, and areas where new materials are needed.
