The application of workflow management to Digital Heritage resources

DHRs usually manage a complex and varied mix of Digital Heritage objects of different types and formats. They tend to be complex in nature and usually involve complex, simultaneous and intersecting workflows. As a result, DHRs impose implementation challenges on any solutions that aim to manage their workflows. Thus, despite the proliferation of DHRs, it is a noteworthy trend that there is a general lack of workflow management solutions that can be utilized in such systems. As a research area that is rarely covered, this paper therefore presents the design and development of a novel Workflow Management System (WfMS) built to integrate with DHRs specifically, and DLSs in general. In this context, an experimental WfMS aimed to test the validity of workflow management integration with DHRs. The devised WfMS was built as a workflow management solution that can adequately address the specific hurdles imposed by DHR implementations. Additionally, a novel DHR implementation framework called DISPLAYS (Digital Library Services for Playing with Antiquity and Shared Heritage) is presented as a test bed for the proposed WfMS.

The application of workflows to Digital Heritage systems
2012Co-Authors: Abdullah Al-barakatiAbstract:Digital Heritage systems usually handle a rich and varied mix of Digital objects, accompanied by complex and intersecting workflows and processes. However, they usually lack effective workflow management within their components as evident in the lack of integrated solutions that include workflow components. There are a number of reasons for this limitation in workflow management utilization including some technical challenges, the unique nature of each Digital resource and the challenges imposed by the environments and infrastructure in which such systems operate. This thesis investigates the concept of utilizing Workflow Management Systems (WfMS) within Digital Library Systems, and more specifically in online Digital Heritage Resources. The research work conducted involved the design and development of a novel experimental WfMS to test the viability of effective workflow management on the complex processes that exist in Digital library and Heritage resources. This rarely studied area of interest is covered by analyzing evolving workflow management technologies and paradigms. The different operational and technological aspects of these systems are evaluated while focusing on the areas that traditional systems often fail to address. A Digital Heritage resource was created to test a novel concept called DISPLAYS (Digital Library Services for Playing with Antiquity and Shared Heritage), which provides Digital Heritage content: creation, archival, exposition, presentation and interaction services for Digital Heritage collections. Based on DISPLAYS, a specific Digital Heritage resource was created to validate its concept and, more importantly, to act as a test bed to validate workflow management for Digital Heritage resources. This DISPLAYS type system implementation was called the Reanimating Cultural Heritage resource, for which three core components are the archival, retrieval and presentation components. To validate workflow management and its concepts, another limited version of these reanimating cultural Heritage components was implemented within a workflow management host to test if the workflow technology is a viable choice for managing control and dataflow within a Digital Heritage system: this was successfully proved.

A Dynamic Workflow Management Framework for Digital Heritage and Technology Enhanced Learning

Despite the large number of workflow systems none have been applied to the Digital Heritage e-Learning domain. This paper represents an optimised solution for customising the architecture of workflows in order to improve productivity (effectiveness) in a service-oriented Digital library and technology enhanced learning system. This paper presents the application of workflows to e-Learning and Digital libraries within a dynamic workflow management framework. Our workflow solution is described and analysed by considering a typical use case scenario. Particular emphasis is placed on examining how the new workflow model can improve the speed and increase the efficiency of a Digital library focused on e-Learning. Our service-oriented Digital library architecture is demonstrated by integrating four main components using web services: 1) Digital content creation, in for example 3D content creation, 2) archival, i.e. storage and management of this 3D content for use and re-use, 3) organisation of Digital Heritage content into an e-Learning exposition or package and 4) final presentation of this content that exploits innovative visualisation and interaction techniques based on social networking, which allows incorporation of user defined content in a virtual and augmented reality Web 2.0 mashup. Other technologies exploited in this scenario include a web service-based Grid solution for generating 3D animations from the 3D content.

Our approach allows Sierra Leone diaspora to create, share and exchange information with each other about the Sierra Leone aggregated collections composed of more than 3,000 Digital objects from five UK national and regional museums and the Sierra Leone National Museum. Sierra Leone diaspora can augment the Digital Heritage resource with their own media content, e.g. images, videos and narrative, related to objects in the collection through social media technology based around Facebook.

Digital Heritage Systems: the ARCO Evaluation

The case study describes the knowledge acquired from several user requirement assessments, and further describes how to use this specific knowledge to provide a general framework for a holistic virtual museum evaluation. This approach will facilitate designers to determine the flaws of virtual museum environments, fill the gap between the technologies they use and those the users prefer and improve them in order to provide interactive and engaging virtual museums. The proposed model used not only quantitative, but also qualitative evaluation methods, and it is based on the extensive evaluations of the ARCO system by simple end-users, usability experts and domain experts. The main evaluation criteria were usability, presence, and learning.

Multimodal Mixed Reality Interfaces for Visualizing Digital Heritage

We propose in this paper an integration of these technologies to provide a novel multimodal mixed reality interface that facilitates the implementation of more interesting Digital Heritage exhibitions. With such exhibitions participants can switch dynamically between virtual web-based environments to indoor augmented reality environments as well as make use of various multimodal interaction techniques to better explore Heritage information in the virtual museum. The museum visitor can potentially experience their Digital Heritage in the physical sense in the museum, then explore further through the web, visualize this Heritage in the round (3D on the web), take that 3D artifact into the augmented reality domain (the real world) and explore it further using various multimodal interfaces.

Survey of 3D Digital Heritage repositories and platforms
Virtual Archaeology Review, 2020Co-Authors: Erik Champion, Hafizur RahamanAbstract:Despite the increasing number of three-dimensional (3D) model portals and online repositories catering for Digital Heritage scholars, students and interested members of the general public, there are very few recent academic publications that offer a critical analysis when reviewing the relative potential of these portals and online repositories. Solid reviews of the features and functions they offer are insufficient; there is also a lack of explanations as to how these assets and their related functionality can further the Digital Heritage (and virtual Heritage) field, and help in the preservation, maintenance, and promotion of real-world 3D Heritage sites and assets. What features do they offer? How could their feature list better cater for the needs of the GLAM (galleries, libraries, archives and museums) sector? This article’s priority is to examine the useful features of 8 institutional and 11 commercial repositories designed specifically to host 3D Digital models. The available features of their associated 3D viewers, where applicable, are also analysed, connecting recommendations for future-proofing with the need to address current gaps and weaknesses in the scholarly field of 3D Digital Heritage. Many projects do not address the requirements stipulated by charters, such as access, reusability, and preservation. The lack of preservation strategies and examples highlights the oxymoronic nature of virtual Heritage (oxymoronic in the sense that the virtual Heritage projects themselves are seldom preserved). To study these concerns, six criteria for gauging the usefulness of the 3D repositories to host 3D Digital models and related Digital assets are suggested. The authors also provide 13 features that would be useful additions for their 3D viewers. Highlights: A survey of relevant features from eight institutional and eleven commercial online 3D repositories in the scholarly fieldof 3D Digital Heritage. Presents a critical review of their hosting services and 3D model viewer features. Proposes six features to enhance services of 3D repositories to support the GLAM sector, Heritage scholars andHeritage communities.

3D Digital Heritage Models as Sustainable Scholarly Resources
Sustainability, 2019Co-Authors: Erik Champion, Hafizur RahamanAbstract:If virtual Heritage is the application of virtual reality to cultural Heritage, then one might assume that virtual Heritage (and 3D Digital Heritage in general) successfully communicates the need to preserve the cultural significance of physical artefacts and intangible Heritage. However, Digital Heritage models are seldom seen outside of conference presentations, one-off museum exhibitions, or Digital reconstructions used in films and television programs. To understand why, we surveyed 1483 Digital Heritage papers published in 14 recent proceedings. Only 264 explicitly mentioned 3D models and related assets; 19 contained links, but none of these links worked. This is clearly not sustainable, neither for scholarly activity nor as a way to engage the public in Heritage preservation. To encourage more sustainable research practices, 3D models must be actively promoted as scholarly resources. In this paper, we also recommend ways researchers could better sustain these 3D models and assets both as Digital cultural artefacts and as tools to help the public explore the vital but often overlooked relationship between built Heritage and the natural world.

Interpreting Digital Heritage: A Conceptual Model with End-Users' Perspective:

There is no significant interpretation method or principle for interpreting Digital Heritage like other disciplines such as archaeology. This paper argues that, for better interpretation and experience of a Digital Heritage site, a comprehensive interpretation method is required, which should address end-users with various background, overcome the linearity in narrative level and subjectiveness in content creation. This paper also argues that instead of predetermined instructional sequences or descriptive interpretation, the interaction setting can be participatory and contributive, where the end-users and environment may engage in ‘dialogic-interaction’.
