    Abstract:

    Geologic field data collection, analysis, and map compilation are undergoing a Revolution in methods, largely precipitated by global positioning system (GPS) and geographic information system (GIS) equipped mobile computers paired with virtual globe visualizations. Modern, ruggedized personal Digital assistants (PDAs) and tablet PCs can record a wide spectrum of geologic data and facilitate iterative geologic map construction and evaluation on location in the field. Spatial data, maps, and interpretations can be presented in a variety of formats on virtual globes, such as Google Earth and NASA World Wind, given only a basic knowledge of scripting languages. As a case study, we present geologic maps assembled in Google Earth that are based on Digital field data. Interactive features of these maps include (1) the ability to zoom, pan, and tilt the terrain and map to any desired viewpoint; (2) selectable, draped polygons representing the spatial extent of geologic units that can be rendered semi-transparent, allowing the viewer to examine the underlying terrain; (3) vertical cross sections that emerge from the subsurface in their proper location and orientation; (4) structural symbols (e.g., strike and dip), positioned at outcrop locations, that can display associated metadata; and (5) other data, such as Digital photos or sketches, as clickable objects in their correct field locations. Google Earth–based interactive geologic maps communicate data and interpretations in a format that is more intuitive and easy to grasp than the traditional format of paper maps and cross sections. The virtual three-dimensional (3-D) interface removes much of the cognitive barrier of attempting to visualize 3-D features from a two-dimensional map or cross section. Thus, the Digital Revolution in geologic mapping is finally providing geosci entists with tools to present important concepts in an intuitive format understandable to the expert and layperson alike.

    Abstract:

    I propose that our economy is currently in the early stages of a Second Digital Revolution. In contrast to the First Digital Revolution, which digitized information goods via personal computers, the Second Digital Revolution will digitize physical goods via desktop 3D printers. Thus, the divide between the physical and the Digital will begin to converge, which will likely expand the role of consumers and challenge the dominance of firms. In this article, I explain the origins, nature, and impact of this Second Digital Revolution and discuss its research implications for marketing scholars.

    Abstract:

    The Digital Revolution has created a data-rich environment. Increasingly, firms are seeking to acquire and analyze a variety of consumer data such as online shopping, social media, and web browsing behavior to enhance their innovation activities. This approach is termed “Innovation from Data.” At the same time, a growing number of consumers are gaining the ability to transform Digital data into innovative physical products through the use of new tools such as audio and video editing software and 3D printing technology. This approach is termed “Innovation as Data.” These two approaches differ substantially in terms of their views on the role of consumers, the relevance of firms, and the nature of products. This article introduces the concept of Innovation as Data and discusses its relation to the Digital Revolution in general and 3D printing in particular. In addition, it offers a set of recommendations for managers seeking to leverage this new innovation approach and ideas for scholars interested in researching this intriguing domain.

    From innovation triggered by user virtual communities to remote surgery and new financial instruments, the creative power of individuals is being fostered at proportions previously unseen. The main driver enabling such a pace of innovation, scientific progress, and user adoption is the Digital Revolution. One consequence is that interrelationships between science, technology and society are increasing in complexity and harder to understand. COST Foresight 2030 is an initiative encompassing a set of events designed to explore a multi-disciplinary vision for a future permeated and shaped by the Digital Revolution. This paper describes the vision behind COST Foresight 2030 and highlights several issues that are likely to become central in the next decades.

The main driver enabling such a pace of innovation, scientific progress, and user adoption is the Digital Revolution. One consequence is that interrelationships between science, technology and society are increasing in complexity and harder to understand. COST Foresight 2030 is an initiative encompassing a set of events designed to explore a multi-disciplinary vision for a future permeated and shaped by the Digital Revolution. The first of such events is a brain-storming workshop on Computer and Communication Sciences and Technologies, whose objective is to identify key technologies available by year 2030 and the corresponding benefits for Individuals, Society, and the World, in terms of Devices, Systems, and Services. The outcomes of this workshop will serve as the basis for experts in other scientific areas to envision how challenges in their respective disciplines will be tackled when such technologies are available. Such outcomes will be presented at the IEEE VITAE conference.
