Dioctophyme Renale (Goeze, 1782) (Nematoda, Dioctophymidae) parasitic in mammals other than humans: A comprehensive review.

Yurlova, Masahide Yoshikawa, Yukifumi NawaAbstract:Abstract A comprehensive review of the infection of mammals with the nematode Dioctophyme Renale (Goeze, 1782) (Nematoda, Dioctophymidae) is presented. Mammals, including man, are the definitive hosts for this parasite. Several aspects of the infection with the parasite in mammals other than humans are critically evaluated: geographical distribution, host species recorded so far and the relative importance of the different hosts, location of parasites within the host, prevalence and intensity of the infection, diagnostic methods, pathology induced by the parasites, epidemiology and the methods of control and treatment. The authors provide an updated review about the infection, based on a extensive bibliographic search worldwide, and point out the most relevant aspects of the biology of the parasite as well as several research topics which need to be explored for a better understanding of the biology of this interesting and important parasitic nematode.

Entre os caes tem maior prevalencia em errantes, principalmente, por conta dos habitos menos seletivos, tornando interessante o estudo com os mesmos. Animais que vivem em abrigos, geralmente apresentam historico de viver em ambiente precario, acesso restrito a agua limpa e alimento adequado e, em superpopulacao, favorecendo a disseminacao da dioctofimose. Por conta disso, este trabalho teve o objetivo de verificar a ocorrencia do parasitismo por D. Renale em caes de abrigos do municipio de Sao Mateus do Sul, estado do Parana. Os animais foram transportados por uma Organizacao Nao Governamental (ONG) ate o Hospital Veterinario Escola para procedimento de ovariosalpingohisterectomia (OSH). Os resultados das analises hematologica, bioquimica e da urina foram comparados entre caes parasitados e nao parasitados pelo teste t de Student e a idade foi avaliada pelo teste exato de Fisher (p≤ 0,05). Entre agosto e novembro de 2018, o abrigo encaminhou 38 femeas, sem raca definida para OSH e destas, tres (7,89%) apresentaram ovos do parasito na urina. Um, dentre os tres caes positivos para D. Renale foi a obito durante a cirurgia e na necropsia uma femea do parasito foi observada no rim esquerdo. A creatinina foi significativamente mais alta nos caes que apresentaram ovos do parasito na urina (p=0,015). Nao foram observadas diferencas entre caes que apresentaram ou nao ovos do parasita na urina em relacao aos fatores: dosagem de ureia e de proteinas plasmaticas totais, hemograma, leucograma, analise fisica da urina, assim como idade (p>0,05). E possivel concluir que em caes do municipio, principalmente, os de abrigos, os exames rotineiros de urinalise e dosagem de creatinina, mesmo naqueles aparentemente saudaveis, sao importantes para um diagnostico precoce de parasitismo por D. Renale .

This is a report about the parasitism of D. Renale found in the kidney of two roadkill lesser grisons (Galictis cuja) in the North of the state of Santa Catarina, Brazil. The report of this parasitism in this species is important to complement the records about this native carnivore as a contributor in the epidemiologic chain while host/disseminator of this helminth with zoonotic potential.

This disease has high occurrence in the municipality of Tres Barras, state of Santa Catarina, thus making this an interesting area to study the epidemiological aspects of infection by D. Renale in dogs. Among 197 dogs, 14.2% showed the parasite eggs in urine and 16.4% showed IgG antibodies anti-D. Renale in serum samples according to the indirect ELISA method; among seropositive dogs, 15 (37.5%) animals did not show any parasite eggs in their urine. Parasitism was more frequent in females, and there was no finding of interference from age on parasitism. Factors such as water potential and presence of paratenic hosts in the studied region were reported by the owners of dogs and may have contributed to the occurrence of parasitism.

The three-year-old cat of indeterminate breed presented abdominal distension and was taken to the University of Contestado Veterinary Hospital in Canoinhas, state of Santa Catarina, since the owner suspected pregnancy. An ultrasound scan did not confirm pregnancy but revealed parasitism in the kidney. This case is worth reporting because domestic cats are rarely hosts of this nematode species.

Morphology of eggs of Dioctophyme Renale Goeze, 1782 (Nematoda: Dioctophymatidae) and influences of temperature on development of first-stage larvae in the eggs

Renale eggs, as well as on first-stage larvae development into eggs kept at different temperatures. Eggs were obtained by centrifugation of infected dog urine, placed in Petri dishes, and stored in BOD chamber for a 90-day period. Each treatment (GI - 15 oC, GII - 20 oC, and GIII - 26 oC) was repeated five times. Eggs showed average measures of 67.23 x 42.78 µm, and the mean incubation time was inversely proportional to the incubation temperature. Larvae motility was observed one week after being observed in eggs.
