    Na cidade de Recife, Estado de Pernambuco, nordeste do Brasil, os caes domesticos sao frequentemente infestados por ectoparasitos de interesse para medicina veterinaria e para a saude publica. Heterodoxus spiniger e um piolho mastigador comum em caes, apontado como hospedeiro intermediario de Dipetalonema reconditum. Apesar de sua ampla difusao geografica no Brasil, apenas recentemente o piolho Heterodoxus spiniger foi registrado em Pernambuco. Neste sentido, o objetivo deste estudo foi verificar a presenca de piolhos da referida especie em caes de Recife. Dos 310 caes examinados, 11 estavam parasitados por Heterodoxus spiniger, correspondendo a uma taxa de prevalencia de 3,5%. Este resultado indica que esta especie de piolho mastigador pode ser encontrada em caes procedentes de Recife, porem com baixa prevalencia.

    Abstract:

    In the city of Recife, Pernambuco state, northeastern Brazil, domestic dogs are usually infected by ectoparasites of both veterinary and public health importance. Heterodoxus spiniger is a common dog chewing louse, which is known as an intermediate host of Dipetalonema reconditum. Despite of its wide geographical diffusion in Brazil, Heterodoxus spiniger was only recently recorded in Pernambuco. The aim of this paper was to verify the infestations by Heterodoxus spiniger on dogs from Recife. Three hundred and ten dogs were examined and 11 of these were parasitized by Heterodoxus spiniger, corresponding to a prevalence rate of 3.5%. This indicates that Heterodoxus spiniger can be found on dogs from Recife, but in low prevalence. Key-words: Heterodoxus spiniger. Louse. Dogs. Recife. Pernambuco.

  • A survey of the prevalence of canine filariasis in Spain

    Abstract:

    Abstract A survey was conducted in Spain to update and expand information currently available on the prevalence of infection by filarids in dogs. Between August 1987 and March 1988, blood samples and epizootiological data from 1723 dogs were submitted by 72 veterinarians. Samples were examined by the modified Knott technique and microfilariae were identified on the basis of specific morphological characteristics. The prevalence of filarial parasites was determined for dogs sampled in each of 34 provinces as well as in the Canary and the Balearic Islands. Dirofilaria immitis microfilariae were detected in 3.7% of the dogs sampled. Microfilariae of Dipetalonema reconditum and Dipetalonema dracunculoides were identified in 1.0% and 1.5% of the samples, respectively. Mixed infections of D. immitis and Dip. dracunculoides were observed in seven dogs. Dirofilaria immitis was prevalent in the southern part of the country and on the Canary and Balearic Islands. This parasite was not observed in dogs from the northernmost provinces, but was patent in dogs from the Ebro Valley (located in the northeast) and in dogs from some large urban areas.

  • CANINE FILARIASIS IMPORTANCE AND TRANSMISSION IN THE BAIX LLOBREGAT AREA, BARCELONA (SPAIN)

    Field and laboratory studies were performed in order to assess the degree of canine dirofilariasis caused by Dirofilaria immitis (Leidy) in the Baix Llobregat region, a fluvial area near Barcelona, Spain. A total of 188 dogs were sampled between May and August of 1994. Three main areas were chosen: the Western Delta, the Eastern Delta and the Northern zone. Simultaneously, a mosquito sampling programme was carried out with CO2 light traps, to search for infective larvae (L3) of D. immitis. Of the 188 dogs sampled, 38 were positive for at least one of the three filaria found: D. immitis 12.8%, Dipetalonema reconditum (Grassi) 3.7% and Dipetalonema dracunculoides (Cobbold) 2.7%. Only 1.1% showed a mixed infection of both D. immitis and D. dracunculoides. Although Dirofilaria repens Raillet et Henry has been found in Spain, it was not found in this study. Comparing the three zones of the Baix Llobregat, the Eastern Delta showed the highest level of D. immitis (35.3%), probably due to the presence of Aedes caspius (Pallas). Despite the effort in sampling the mosquito population, D. immitis was not found in any of the 2001 females dissected, belonging to 5 species.

    Abstract Both Dirofilaria immiti and Dipetalonema reconditum may be found in blood of infected dogs but it is not easy to distinguish D. immitis from D. reconditum in morphology. We cloned and sequenced the contiguous internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2, of these two different parasites and published on GenBank as AF217800 for D. immiti and AF217801 for D. reconditum in this study. We designed two pairs of specific primers derived from ITS2 being used for polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The amplicons of ITS2 from D. immiti and D. reconditum are 302 and 348 bp, respectively. Moreover, the limitation for amplifying ITS2 gene using this PCR demonstrated that 1×10 −2 microfilaria of each species of parasite smashed or even with mixed samples could be detected and the PCR products were predicted as the same as that described above. Thus, D. immiti and D. reconditum could be differentially diagnosed by this specific PCR. Seventeen clinical cases were evaluated and all of them were correctly identified. In this study, ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 of D. immiti or D. reconditum were the first time sequenced and analyzed. No significant similarity of ITS1 and ITS2 between D. immiti and D. reconditum could be observed.
