    Abstract A dog naturally infected with Dipetalonema dracunculoides and having a microfilaremia of 6050 microfilariae per mm3 of blood was used as source of infection. Experimentally cultivated nymphs of Rhipicephalus sanguineus were fed on the donor dog. Once engorged, ninety-three nymphs were removed and kept at 30°C and RH 90% until they moulted to the adult stage. To study the development of microfilariae in the vector, ten ticks were dissected at Day 37 post-infection. Adult infected ticks were fed on two uninfected dogs. The observed pre-patent periods were 69 and 76 days. Trans-stadial transmission of Dipetalonema dracunculoides by Rhipicephalus sanguineus was demonstrated.

    Abstract A survey was conducted in Spain to update and expand information currently available on the prevalence of infection by filarids in dogs. Between August 1987 and March 1988, blood samples and epizootiological data from 1723 dogs were submitted by 72 veterinarians. Samples were examined by the modified Knott technique and microfilariae were identified on the basis of specific morphological characteristics. The prevalence of filarial parasites was determined for dogs sampled in each of 34 provinces as well as in the Canary and the Balearic Islands. Dirofilaria immitis microfilariae were detected in 3.7% of the dogs sampled. Microfilariae of Dipetalonema reconditum and Dipetalonema dracunculoides were identified in 1.0% and 1.5% of the samples, respectively. Mixed infections of D. immitis and Dip. dracunculoides were observed in seven dogs. Dirofilaria immitis was prevalent in the southern part of the country and on the Canary and Balearic Islands. This parasite was not observed in dogs from the northernmost provinces, but was patent in dogs from the Ebro Valley (located in the northeast) and in dogs from some large urban areas.

    Resumen En 26 perros positivos y 20 negativos a microfilarias de Dipetalonema sp. se realizaron examenes hematologicos con el proposito de determinar variaciones en el cuadro leucocitario producidas por el parasito. Entre ambos grupos de perros el hematocrito (VGA), numero de leucocitos totales y el recuento diferencial, tanto en valores absolutos como relativos, no presentaron diferencias significativas. De lo que se desprende que el parasito no produce eosinofilia u otra variacion en los leucocitos sanguineos. Zusammenfassung Blutwerte bei Hunden mit Microfilarienbefall (Dipetalonema sp.) Bei 26 Hunden mit und 20 Hunden ohne Microfilarienbefall durch Dipetalonema sp. wurden vergleichende hamatologische Untersuchungen angestellt. Zwischen beiden Gruppen traten keine signifikanten Unterschiede hinsichtlich Haematokrit-Wert, Gesamtleikozytenzahl und Differentialblutbild auf. Dies bedeutet, das der Parasitenbefall keine Eosinophilie oder sonstige Anderungen im Leukozytenbild verursacht. Summary Haematological Values in Dogs Infected with Microfilaria of Dipetalonema sp. The packed cell volume (PCV), total white blood cell count (WBC) and differential white blood cell count were performed in 26 dogs infected with Dipetalonema sp. and in 20 dogs negative to microfilaria. The results obtained in both groups of dogs did not present a significant difference in all the parameters studied. It is concluded that the parasite does not produce an eosinophilia or other significant change in the leucocyte count.
