    Abstract:

    We present a framework for generating content-adaptive macros that can transfer complex photo manipulations to new target images. We demonstrate applications of our framework to face, landscape, and global manipulations. To create a content-adaptive macro, we make use of multiple training demonstrations. Specifically, we use automated image labeling and machine learning techniques to learn the dependencies between image features and the parameters of each selection, brush stroke, and image processing operation in the macro. Although our approach is limited to learning manipulations where there is a Direct Dependency between image features and operation parameters, we show that our framework is able to learn a large class of the most commonly used manipulations using as few as 20 training demonstrations. Our framework also provides interactive controls to help macro authors and users generate training demonstrations and correct errors due to incorrect labeling or poor parameter estimation. We ask viewers to compare images generated using our content-adaptive macros with and without corrections to manually generated ground-truth images and find that they consistently rate both our automatic and corrected results as close in appearance to the ground truth. We also evaluate the utility of our proposed macro generation workflow via a small informal lab study with professional photographers. The study suggests that our workflow is effective and practical in the context of real-world photo editing.

  • On designing Direct Dependency: based fast recovery algorithms for distributed systems

    Abstract:

    In this paper, we have proposed two recovery algorithms for distributed systems. Both algorithms follow a revolving centralized scheme. The Direct Dependency tracking of an integer representing the number of messages sent by each process has been shown to be sufficient to determine the maximum consistent state. The main feature of the recovery algorithms is that they are executed simultaneously by all the participating processes while determining the maximum consistent state. It thus ensures fast execution. The time overheads of the recovery algorithms are reduced further because both algorithms avoid some unnecessary comparisons while determining a consistent global checkpoint. The second algorithm has been shown to be faster than the first one, because it avoids, in general, much larger number of unnecessary comparisons compared to the first one; however the trade off is the increased amount of control information to be stored at each checkpoint in the second algorithm.

    Abstract:

    Abstract TLRs represent the first line of defense against invading pathogens in the innate immune system. Certain cytokines are important mediators and essentially necessary to assure an appropriately regulated immune response. Recent data gave initial evidence that IL-1β is one of the most relevant members of these regulating cytokines. We investigated the induction of IL-1β production in monocytes and pDCs stimulated with ligands for TLR7 and TLR8 and with antiphospholipid antibodies (aPL). Using human monocytes and pDCs for stimulation with specific TLR7 and TLR8 ligands such as resiquimod (R848) and single stranded RNA (RNA42) as well as with a human monoclonal aPL HL5B resulted in a specific upregulation of IL-1β mRNA and protein in these cells. Determination of expression-levels using real-time RT-PCR showed significantly augmented TLR-dependent IL-1β and caspase-1 expression. This increase could be substantially enhanced by adding the monoclonal aPL HL5B. To demonstrate the Direct Dependency between TLR stimulation and IL-1β production, specific TLR inhibitors were applied and the IL-1β and caspase-1 secretion could be explicitly decreased. The respective protein levels were determined using Western Blot, FACS analysis or ELISA assays. In conclusion we demonstrated that the downstream signaling pathway of TLR7 and TLR8 in monocytes and pDCs after stimulation with specific ligands included not only the secretion of cytokines such as TNFα and IL-1β but as well the activation of necessary regulating proteins like caspase-1. APL seem to enforce this process hinting that endogenous stimulation of TLRs in the Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) patients resulted in enhanced secretion of proinflammatory cytokines.
