How the surgeon submits lymph nodes for pathological evaluation may also affect how many are retrieved.Materials and Methods: Bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection and radical cystectomy for transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder was performed in 32 patients. The extent of lymph node dissection involved standard and extended lymphadenectomy in 20 and 12 cases, respectively. In patients who underwent standard dissection unilateral en bloc submission of the lymph nodes was done with the contralateral lymph node dissection sent as an individual Discrete Packet. In those who underwent extended dissection all lymph nodes from each side were submitted en bloc or as 6 Packets.Results: Standard lymphadenectomy en bloc specimens yielded a mean of 2.4 lymph nodes compared with 8.5 retrieved from individual l...

IEEE Transactions on Intelligent Transportation Systems, 2013Co-Authors: Hilmi Berk CelikogluAbstract:This paper investigates the performance of a flow model in providing efficient travel-time estimation for varying flow patterns of freeway traffic by adopting a two-phase fundamental diagram. The model follows a Discrete-Packet-based mesoscopic simulation approach that explicitly considers both the anisotropic property of traffic flow in Packet state updating and the uniform speed differentiation of vehicle Packets at each Discrete time step. The measure of travel time is obtained as a link performance resulting from a simplified dynamic network loading process. The spatiotemporal flow propagation on a selected freeway segment is simulated comparatively by incorporating both the proposed model and a linear-travel-time-function-based link performance model. Performance of the flow model in travel-time estimation is sought, considering actual measures obtained by a probe vehicle. The main improvement on estimating the travel-time process is that the employed model considers different speed and acceleration levels on different Discrete time intervals and satisfies the anisotropy property by consistently simulating flow propagation within the dynamic network modeling frame. In contrast to the vast data need and computational burden of trajectory-based methods, the employed flow-based model requires only the time-varying inflow profiles to estimate spatially and temporally varying travel times by artificially segmenting freeway routes.

Spatially Continuous Orientation Adaptive Discrete Packet Wavelet Decomposition for Image Compression
2006 International Conference on Image Processing, 2006Co-Authors: Nagita Mehrseresht, David TaubmanAbstract:In this paper, we propose an orientation adaptive Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) with perfect reconstruction. The proposed transform utilizes the lifting structure to effectively orient the 2D-DWT bases in the direction of local image features. A shifting operator is employed within each lifting step to align spatial geometric features along the vertical or horizontal directions. The proposed oriented transform generates a scalable representation for the image and the orientation information. To approximate the asymptotically optimal rate-distortion performance of a piecewise regular function more closely, we adopt a Packet wavelet decomposition. The experimental results obtained by implementing the proposed transform in a JPEG2000 codec illustrate superior compression performance for the oriented transform with more than 2.5 dB improvement for highly oriented natural images. More importantly, even at the same PSNR, the proposed scheme reduces the visual appearance of the Gibbs-like artifacts significantly, considerably improving the visual quality of the reconstructed image.
