  • the effects of internet use on political participation evidence from an agency online Discussion Forum
    Administration & Society, 2004
Co-Authors: Woody J Stanley, Christopher Weare
    Abstract:

We seek to clarify the relationship between Internet use and political participation. Although early theorists touted the potential mobilizing effects of the Internet, existing empirical studies have failed to find support for such a relationship. We challenge these findings through the analysis of an experimental use of an online Discussion Forum in anagency strategic planning exercise. The Web-based Discussion run in parallel to the traditional docket attracted new individuals to participate in the decision-making process and influenced the range of topics discussed. These results suggest that extending opportunities for participation can attract new voices, thereby changing decision makers’information environment.

In doing so, we trace a theoretical route in which we discuss concepts as virtual community, genre and referenciation phenomenon. Concerning the first category, we take into account the theoretical postulates of Sociology, Social Learning Theory, and Applied Linguistics in order to propose a concept of virtual community that fits the virtual associations verified in the Orkut website. Concerning the second category, we based our observations, in the genre focused, on the theoretical postulates of Bakhtin (1999; 2003), Rojo (2005), and Rodrigues (2005). These authors define genre under a social and historic perspective. Regarding the last category, we consider authors from Textual Linguistics that discuss the referenciation phenomenon and its theoretical implications. We adopted Kochs (2004; 2005; 2006) taxonomic and analytical propose of the anaphoric strategies with noun heads. These strategies are noun descriptions, anaphoric encapsulations and metadiscoursive labels. The analysis of such process in our corpus was based on both the postulates of referenciation, inscribed in the Textual Linguistics field, and on the considerations of the dialogic nature of genres, inscribed in the Linguistics of Enunciation field

  • applying social network analysis to understand the knowledge sharing behaviour of practitioners in a clinical online Discussion Forum
Journal of Medical Internet Research, 2012
Co-Authors: Samuel A Stewart, Syed Sibte Raza Abidi
    Abstract:

Background: Knowledge Translation (KT) plays a vital role in the modern health care community, facilitating the incorporation of new evidence into practice. Web 2.0 tools provide a useful mechanism for establishing an online KT environment in which health practitioners share their practice-related knowledge and experiences with an online community of practice. We have implemented a Web 2.0 based KT environment—an online Discussion Forum—for pediatric pain practitioners across seven different hospitals in Thailand. The online Discussion Forum enabled the pediatric pain practitioners to share and translate their experiential knowledge to help improve the management of pediatric pain in hospitals. Objective: The goal of this research is to investigate the knowledge sharing dynamics of a community of practice through an online Discussion Forum. We evaluated the communication patterns of the community members using statistical and social network analysis methods in order to better understand how the online community engages to share experiential knowledge. Methods: Statistical analyses and visualizations provide a broad overview of the communication patterns within the Discussion Forum. Social network analysis provides the tools to delve deeper into the social network, identifying the most active members of the community, reporting the overall health of the social network, isolating the potential core members of the social network, and exploring the inter-group relationships that exist across institutions and professions. Results: The statistical analyses revealed a network dominated by a single institution and a single profession, and found a varied relationship between reading and posting content to the Discussion Forum. The social network analysis discovered a healthy network with strong communication patterns, while identifying which users are at the center of the community in terms of facilitating communication. The group-level analysis suggests that there is strong interprofessional and interregional communication, but a dearth of non-nurse participants has been identified as a shortcoming. Conclusions: The results of the analysis suggest that the Discussion Forum is active and healthy, and that, though few, the interprofessional and interinstitutional ties are strong. • analyzing mooc Discussion Forum messages to identify cognitive learning information exchanges
Association for Information Science and Technology, 2015
Co-Authors: Jiansyuan Wong, Bart Pursel, Anna Divinsky, Bernard J Jansen
    Abstract:

While Discussion Forums in online courses have been studied in the past, no one has proposed a model linking messages in Discussion Forums to a learning taxonomy, even though Forums are widely used as educational tools in online courses. In this research, we view Forums as information seeking events and use a keyword taxonomy approach to analyze a large amount of MOOC Forum data to identify the types of learning interactions taking place in Forum conversations. Using 51,761 Forum messages from 8,169 Forum threads from a MOOC with a 50,000+ enrollment, messages are analyzed based on levels of Bloom's Taxonomy to categorize the scholarly discourse. The results of this research show that interactions within MOOC Discussion Forums are a learning process with unique characteristics specific to particular cognitive learning levels. Results also imply that different types of Forum interactions have characteristics relevant to particular learning levels, and the volume of higher levels of cognitive learning incidents increase as the course progresses.

  • an analysis of mooc Discussion Forum interactions from the most active users
International Conference on Social Computing, 2015
Co-Authors: Jiansyuan Wong, Bart Pursel, Anna Divinsky, Bernard J Jansen
    Abstract:

Many massive open online courses (MOOCs) offer mainly video-based lectures, which limits the opportunity for interactions and communications among students and instructors. Thus, the Discussion Forums of MOOC become indispensable in providing a platform for facilitating interactions and communications. In this research, Discussion Forum users who continually and actively participate in the Forum Discussions throughout the course are identified. We then employ different measures for evaluating whether those active users have more influence on overall Forum activities. We further analyze Forum votes, both positive and negative, on posts and comments to verify if active users make positive contributions to the course conversations. Based the result of analysis, users who constantly participate in Forum Discussions are identified as statistically more influential users, and these users also produce a positive effect on the Discussions. Implications for MOOC student engagement and retention are discussed.
