    Abstract:

In this thesis, we study the improvement of the UV protection of polyester textiles by introducing nano or microparticles of TiO2 in the polyester during the extrusion of the yarn. Initially, the influence of different dispersing agents on the good dispersion and mixing of TiO2 with PET is studied. The dispersing agents studied are a partially saponified ester wax of mountain acids (PSEMA), an ester of montanic acids with multifunctional alcohols (MAWMA), an amide wax based on N, N'-bisstearoyl ethylenediamine (AW) and an IQAP dispersant. By non-isothermal crystallization and birefringence microscopy, the good dispersion capacity of MAWMA is observed, so this dispersant is chosen for later study. Next, the importance of the crystalline form (rutile and anatase), particle size (micro and nanometric) and the concentration (1, 2 and 3%) of titanium dioxide in mixtures with polyester in the presence of the dispersing agent chosen in the first part. Its behavior in nonisothermal crystallization by DSC and ultraviolet radiation (UPF, UV protection factor) is studied. The purpose is to know the concentration of optimum TiO2 particles and dispersant for subsequent generation of multifilament yarns with said particles. It is concluded that with 2% of particles, they are well dispersed. The PET wires are then obtained with TiO2 particle under the conditions selected above, a post-spin drawing is performed to provide the yarn with optimum textile properties, knitted fabrics are obtained from said yarns, and finally the fabrics are thermoset. It is studied the variation of the properties of the threads after each of the textile stages applied to know the influence not only of the processed but also of the contribution to this variation by the presence of TiO2 particles. The influence of particle inclusion on the yarn according to particle size (nano or micrometric) and crystalline form (rutile or anatase) on mechanical properties, crystallinity (DSC) and ultraviolet protection (UPF) is studied. Finally, the microstructure of the tissues obtained by Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and the Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) is characterized. A significant improvement of the UPF value of the particle tissues with respect to the UPF value of the original tissue is observed. The observed relationship, in order from highest to lowest protection, is the following: Rutile Micro> Rutile Nano ≈ Anatasa Micro> Anatasa Nano It is observed that substrates with rutile particles have higher ultraviolet protection than anatase particles. As for the particle size, it is observed that the micro particles protect more than the nanometric ones. • influence of side chain structure of polycarboxylate dispersant on the performance of coal water slurry
    Fuel Processing Technology, 2017
Co-Authors: Guanghua Zhang, Niu Zhu, Junfeng Zhu, Yurong Jia
    Abstract:

Abstract Two kinds of polycarboxylate Dispersants with different side-chain structures were synthesized with acrylic acid and sodium styrene sulfonate as the main chain, and native starch and methoxyl polyethylene glycol (MPEG1000) as the side chain. Their structures were characterized by FT-IR and 1 H NMR. The Dispersants were used for Shenhua coal-water slurry. The optimum amount of dispersant, apparent viscosity, maximum slurry concentration and stability of the slurry were investigated. It was found that economically accessible polycarboxylate dispersant using starch as the side-chain (PC-St) endowed coal water slurry (CWS) with better dispersibility and stabilizing ability than that of polycarboxylate dispersant using methoxyl polyethylene glycol as the side-chain (PC1000). When the dosage of PC-St was 0.4 wt%, the maximum concentration of CWS could reach to 66.5%. The dispersing and viscosity-reducing mechanisms of the two Dispersants were systematically elucidated through the investigation on the Zeta potential, adsorption, contact angle and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis of coal particles. In comparison with PC1000, the PC-St dispersant had higher saturated adsorption amount on the surface of the coal and was able to provide greater electrostatic repulsion and better wetting effect for coal particles. Moreover, the thickness of the PC-St adsorption layer was 7.57 nm, which provided good steric hindrance to effectively reduce the aggregation among coal particles. It could be concluded that, compared with PC1000 PC-St had better viscosity-reducing ability and dispersibility, as well as stabilizing ability for CWS.

  • Synthesis of sodium polyacrylate copolymers as water-based Dispersants for ultrafine grinding of praseodymium zirconium silicate
Colloids and Surfaces A: Physicochemical and Engineering Aspects, 2018
Co-Authors: Guanghua Huang, Pan Zhidong, Wang Yanmin
    Abstract:

Abstract A series of sodium polyacrylate copolymers (i.e., poly acrylic acid-co-itaconic acid-co-2-acrylamide-2-methylpropanesulfonic acid or PSIA with different molecular weights and monomer molar ratios) were synthesized based on acrylic acid-co-itaconic acid (PAI) as water-based Dispersants for ultrafine grinding of praseodymium-doped zirconium silicate (Pr-ZrSiO4). The particle size/size distribution, suspension rheology and dispersant adsorption were analyzed by laser particle size analysis, rheometry, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetry (TG) and electrokinetic potential measurement, respectively. Compared to the dispersant PAI, the use of the dispersant PSIA1 with a greater molecular weight in the Pr-ZrSiO4 suspension ground for 45 min at pH values 7.0–8.0 can give a finer product with the narrower particle size distribution. The dispersant PSIA1 used in ultrafine grinding has a suitable viscosity of the suspension and generates more hydrogen bonds on the particle surface, and sulfonic acid group in the dispersant PSIA1 can provide a greater charge density than carboxylic acid groups in the dispersant PAI. In addition, the total potential energies between the particles in suspension with different copolymer Dispersants at different pH values were also calculated. It is indicated that the effective ultrafine grinding of the particles is related to the total interparticle potential energy provided by the dispersant PSIA1 at pH 7.0–8.0.

  • dispersion of oil into water using lecithin tween 80 blends the role of spontaneous emulsification
Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, 2017
Co-Authors: David A Riehm, David J Rokke, Prakash G Paul, Han Seung Lee, Brent S Vizanko, Alon V Mccormick
    Abstract:

Abstract Lecithin-rich mixtures of the nontoxic surfactants lecithin and Tween 80 are effective marine oil spill Dispersants, but produce much higher oil-water interfacial tension than other, comparably effective Dispersants. This suggests interfacial phenomena other than interfacial tension influence lecithin-Tween 80 Dispersants’ effectiveness. The interface between seawater and dispersant-crude oil mixtures was studied using light microscopy, cryogenic scanning electron microscopy, and droplet coalescence tests. Lecithin:Tween 80 ratio was varied from 100:0 to 0:100 and wt% dispersant in the oil was varied from 1.25 to 10 wt%. Tween 80-rich Dispersants cause oil-into-water spontaneous emulsification, while lecithin-rich Dispersants primarily cause water-into-oil spontaneous emulsification. Possible mechanisms for this spontaneous emulsification are discussed, in light of images of spontaneously emulsifying interfaces showing no bursting microstructures, interfacial gel, or phase inversion, and negligible interfacial turbulence. Dispersant loss into seawater due to oil-into-water spontaneous emulsification may explain why Tween 80-rich Dispersants are less effective than lecithin-rich Dispersants with comparable interfacial tension, although longer droplet coalescence times observed for Tween 80-rich, self-emulsifying dispersant-oil mixtures may mitigate the effects of dispersant leaching. Conversely, surfactant retention in oil via lecithin-rich Dispersants’ water-into-oil emulsification may explain why lecithin-Tween 80 Dispersants are as effective as Dispersants containing other surfactant blends which produce lower interfacial tension.

  • the role of Dispersants dynamic interfacial tension in effective crude oil spill dispersion
    Marine Pollution Bulletin, 2014
    Co-Authors: David A Riehm, Alon V Mccormick
    Abstract:

Abstract The dispersion effectiveness of Dispersants containing Tween 80, Span 80, and dioctyl sodium sulfosuccinate (DOSS) was characterized using a modified Swirling Flask test, and was correlated with both initial and dynamic interfacial tension produced by those Dispersants at an oil–water interface. Compositional trends in effectiveness were shown to be governed by: (1) initial oil–water interfacial tension observed upon dispersant–oil–saltwater contact; (2) rate of increase (or decrease) from the initial interfacial tension as DOSS was rapidly lost to the aqueous phase; and (3) gradually slowing kinetics of dispersant adsorption to the oil–water interface as Span 80 concentration was increased, which ultimately diminished dispersion effectiveness considerably even as dynamic interfacial tension remained
